Help with nuvi 5000

A fellow geocacher [ Mainge] is having trouble downloading his nuvi 5000. It will work for a few caches and then freeze up. We have tried to use the poi loader to delete the query with no luck. An suggestion?

I need more detail. I have a Nuvi 5000, so can help.

 

There are two possible ways to get caches on the unit:

 

1) Favourites (Waypoints). There is a limit of 2000 on the unit. You can transfer them to the unit via Mapsource or by placing a GPX file on the unit under /Garmin/GPX. To delete them, you need to do it on the unit. Tools/My Data/Favourites/Select All/Delete. If there are a lot to delete, you then need to wait as it takes a couple of minutes to do it and the unit freezes during the delete process.

 

2) Custom POIs. No limits. Use POI loader or copy a GPI file to the POI directory on the unit.

I'm assuming he knows the nuvi 5000 has no internal battery, so he can only use it in a vehicle.
