+L0ne.R Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Ravelry.com's forums use little buttons under the forum posts. (I've seen these on one other forum and also on a blog service, but ravelry is the first place I saw the use of buttons): When you read the post you can click one or more of them to signify your opinion without having to be write anything, like so: educational (1) interesting (1) funny (1) agree (1) disagree (1) love (1) Comes in handy if all you want to indicate is "me too" (agree, disagree) or thank you (love) or I feel your pain (love), or that was funny/hilarious (funny), etc. It's like taking a mini poll. I bet there are plenty of lurkers who are not verbose but would like to leave their opinion on a subject. Here's an example of a post: So what do people think? Would it be a fun and useful edition to the forums? Quote
+StarBrand Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I would think the forum software would need to support that - the current one in use here doesn't. The forthcoming new forum software may not either. BTW - I would probably not use such a feature - just me though. Quote
+sbell111 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 (edited) ^--- This forum software uses 'post icons' instead. Edited July 14, 2009 by sbell111 Quote
Neos2 Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 Oh, great, then I could spend time skimming past dozens of threads asking "Why am I getting all the disagrees to my post?" here too, and not just at Ravelry! Quote
+Tavisman Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 I agree this would be a good idea. So good I wouldn't of had to write this post! Quote

+Tavisman Posted July 14, 2009 Posted July 14, 2009 And Bittsen could have clicked on your funny button. Bittsen click my funny button! Well we have only just met! I don't do the funny button on a first date. Quote
+L0ne.R Posted July 14, 2009 Author Posted July 14, 2009 So what do people think? Would it be a fun and useful edition to the forums? Replying to my own post but I thought I'd add a comment.... I'm not crazy about the love button -- I'd change it to something else that encompasses thanks/I feel your pain/you deserve a hug. One site I know of uses the word hug. But I wonder if there's a better word. Quote

(and, just for the record, I don't want to hug bittsen... not with an avatar like that... not warm and fluffy enough. ) MrsB Quote

+L0ne.R Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 Just an added thought.... Vote buttons would help to: 1. reduce flames 2. identify really interesting messages in large topics 3. encourage users to write good stuff 4. get feedback Quote
+L0ne.R Posted July 30, 2009 Author Posted July 30, 2009 You know, polls went away for a reason. I didn't realize that we once had polls. Why did they go away? Quote
+Snoogans Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 You know, polls went away for a reason. I didn't realize that we once had polls. Why did they go away? People like me posted polls that showed the unpopularity (is that even a word? lol) of some aspects of TPTB's decision making in the guidance of the geocaching community as it pertains to this site. It's allll water under the bridge. I got my mind right, don't run no mo, an I ain't hadta spend a night in the box in awhile. Quote
+sbell111 Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 Polls give people the impression that life is a democracy. Quote
+Prime Suspect Posted July 30, 2009 Posted July 30, 2009 The truth is, they were being abused. Every few days, someone would start a "do you like polls" poll, or other such garbage they thought was original and funny, but was neither. And after you saw the 5,000th "garmin or magellan" poll, you'd want to whack the poster in the head with a real pole. Good riddance, AFAIC. Quote
