free ZA Memory Map maps.

Hi all.

 

We are going to Cape Town and Gans Bay (shark diving) the last 2 weeks in August from England. I use Memory Map on my PDA with external bluetooth GPS and I looked at Memory Map maps for ZA and they aren't cheap just for a 2 week holiday. Does anyone know of any free maps I can use with MM please?

http://www.openstreetmap.org/ has VERY good coverage of the Cape Town area, and the data is free to use. Have a look if there is something which can convert that data to Memory Map.

Yes OSM is probably your best bet

Unless you can find any user contributed SA maps for MM

Another option is that AVIS car rental lets you hire a Garmin Nuvi street finder on a per day basis.

 

As an alternative - that would have Garmin SA mapset preloaded

Thanks for the replies.. OSM doesn't look like it can be exported to MM which is a shame really. Anyone have user created MM maps they would like to share??

Which brings me to a possible solution for Sadgit1971

 

You could download Garmin Mobile XT for your phone/pda and use the free South Africa maps from the above link or elsewhere.

 

I did a quick google for Mobile XT and there are plenty of instructions out there. I saw mention of 2 weeks free trial which would be perfect for you or there are easy ways around that.

Well it looks like my best option is to use Geocaching Live and download the google maps tiles so I can use it without racking up a massive phone bill.. 2 weeks to go getting excited

 

Still would prefer Memory Maps but Geocaching Live might just work.. possibly

On another forum someone said they us Gosmore for logging GPX tracks. I know it is free, as I tried it a while ago on my Windows Mobile device. It uses OpenStreetmaps. so there you can the free map.

For geocaching you can use the other software "which shall not be named". Look in the SA forum for a thread with that (or similar) title, or PM me for its name.

I have a data plan, however it is paid for by work and when I went caching in Paris I managed to get a bill of £355 in 5 days.. oops, so trying to do this as cheaply as possible Hence wanting offline maps
