+Team Veverca
Hy Is anyone experiencing the "hold level" message when using electronic compass even though the compass is calibrated with the battery that is in and it has been calibrated properly (and at least 5 times to recheck)? I hold the compass level and I experience this message constantly. It sometimes dissapeares when i hold still for about a minute but thats useless. Quote Link to comment

Same here - always had this issue - I keep hoping for a software fix but nothing so far (running 3.01 beta) Quote Link to comment

It's not a problem so much as our "lack of skill" at holding the things perfectly level. The 3 Axis compas that Garmin finally saw fit to put into the Oregon 550's would solve this problem. Alas the other Oregons have a 2 axix compass and thus the "hold level" flashing issue. I don't want to hold my GPS level. I want to hold it so I can best see the dim screen. Garmin should have thought of this. Quote Link to comment

It's on my watch list, but I literally got the Oregon a week ago. Upgrading so soon...gack! Now if they make that screen work better it would be truly tempting. Back On topic. I had the use of a Vista some time ago with the "Hold Level" thing going on. I laid it flat on a table and it still didn't like it. If you have to have a compass, 3axis is the way to go. That upgrade you mentioned. Edited July 8, 2009 by Renegade Knight Quote Link to comment
jinj
I might 'upgrade' mine to the Dakota 20 though, as the current compass in the 400t is junk. I should've just got a Oregon 200. Quote Link to comment
ZeMartelo
I think that "Hold Level" sign has not so much to do with how level the unit is but rather how the calibration was done as it seems that the level is not the same after a calibration. At least thats how I feel about my Colorado. Quote Link to comment
+Teddy2k
I turned mine off long ago. Problem solved! I probably won't ever use it until I get a GPSr with a 3-axis electronic compass. Quote Link to comment

Yes it may be but i have calibrated the device on a flat desk and i get an error even if i put it on the same flat desk and spin it around a little. Quote Link to comment
Haitoman
What a pack of moaners. I think Garmin's betas are rubbish too but the compass is not even an issue for me. If I need to take a bearing, which is rarely more than once an hour, I hold it level and calibrate. What clowns walk along looking at a compass...oh sorry, silly me. Quote Link to comment
+Team Veverca
What clowns walk along looking at a compass...oh sorry, silly me. Well i do. And i'm not moaning but if I buy anything it should work or if it doesn't i try to fix it. If it bothers you that much just leave this topic alone and we'll leave it at that. OK?Plus get at least 10 finds and then we'll see if you need a compass or not. I didn't even have one on my previous GPS which helped me find my first 10 finds but I like to have extra options. P.S.: I think that i've fixed it by updating to 3.01, doing a hard reset and leaving it alone for 20 minutes and then recalibrating. Now i can hold my device at an angle and still don't get the message. Edited July 9, 2009 by Team Veverca Quote Link to comment

And I guess that you're from Slovenia because you can speak in my behalf? So I repeat myself... just keep your trolling to yourself and help if you can or keep away. Both work for me. +Tequila
These Oregon's get more bizarre every day. I have never had a problem with the compass. In fact, I use it all the time. Used to hate the one on the 60CSx. The OR one seems to work fine for me. It is as if there is a "random problem generator" in the firmware. Quote Link to comment

After a day of tinkering with the device I have figured out that the problem was a combination of SD card (fat format was making problems) so formating to FAT32 solved it and something in the rom itself. A format, re-transfer of data and hard reset worked like a charm. You still get the error but compass doesn't freeze. Quote Link to comment
