Cointest - GC down! What did you do?

Just a Trifle

Recommended Posts

Well we know what some people did while GC was down (glued to Jeremy's twitter account waiting for a blow by blow update! :o ) Some appeared to have withdrawal symptoms and were lost because they didn't have current PQs or GSAK to get the required coordinates for the day's caching.

We were frustrated by knowing there were two FTFs waiting for us tantalisingly close to home - if only they had been published 30mins earlier it would have been a different story

While we were waiting for gc to come back on-line, Mr Just a Trifle decided to build a new trailer for the tinny so we can safely get to some of those water-bound caches nearby

471fa8a4-700b-4c8a-91fd-2cf8f2d9df2b.jpg

and Mrs Just a Trifle did some chores which she never seems to get around to :) and checked out her new geocoins which had been at the PO Box. :o

So, what did you get up to? :o

For this cointest, tell us what you got up to while you were not able to access www.geocaching.com There is to be only one entry per caching team, preferably with some photos. The cointest will close 5.00pm EST (Australia) on Thursday, 9 July 2009. (Seeing as I am not always the most entertaining when it comes to telling a story, the winner will be chosen by random.)

The prize will be a Caching in Queensland Golden Orb Weaver coin. This is my first cointest, so hopefully everything will work OK (and it will mean I have achieved at least one of my New Year's resolutions too!)

Well, I was out caching when the site went down. Did ALOT of walking for just 3 caches. After that I guess I went to the driving range to practice sucking at golf. Mission accomplished....

Oh ya, and I went fossil hunting! How could I forget that! Come to think of it, that's exactly the same as caching - get coordinates, drive to the site, spend a bunch of time flipping over rocks! Anyhow, came away with some great fossils. I'll post some pics when I get 'em.

How will you decide a winner though?

Apart from the fact I checked the gc.com and forums websites every 10 minutes!!!! Even when waking up at night!!!! ... no I am not addicted and do not need a support group.

I managed to drop a few coins in local caches, prepare for a trip to South Africa and watch the Wimbeldon Ladies tennis final.

Well, I'd like to say i did something exciting and meaningful, but it came down to chores. I did laundry, walked the dog, did the dishes, cleaned the guestroom, went through some boxes from the move 8 monthes ago, and then I went to work. That's about it.

I consoled myself with my 9 pillows, soft sheets, 3 quilts and 3 kitty cats.... meaning I slept the day away. "It will be alllll better when I awake." Did I mention the bag of M&M's?? Oh.. I also emailed with Atlanta Gal - she kept me updated on the site progress.

It was a beautiful day here in Seattle, so the girlfriend and I headed out to our favorite sandwich shop (The Other Coast Cafe, in Ballard, try the Rajun Cajin!) and brought them to Golden Gardens beach. It was packed, but we found a nice spot under the trees, ate and relaxed. That evening we went off to a wine tasting at a friend's house and capped it all off with some late night pizza.

Of course, I was checking twitter frequently for updates

After we confirmed the site was officially down & not coming back up any time soon we twiddled our thumbs while trying to come up with a plan. About an hour later, hubby opted for a nice, long nap. My daughter and I decided to hop in the Jeep on a maintence run to check on some our caches, since we obviously didn't need the coords for those. We checked on 5 caches, all in good order and took some new photos of the areas.

100_4395.jpg100_4407-1.jpg

While we were taking a little break I turned on the GPSr (I bring it everywhere) and found a wonderful surprise! One single unfound cache was still uploaded. Yippee! It was approximately 30 miles away from where we were, so off we headed. We didn't know what to expect as we had never been to this area, but it turned out to be a little park and a HUGE wooded area. To make a long hike short... we had a nice walk through the woods, while dodging thorns & ivy, and had a blast crossing a creek before finding our reward = a regular sized cache! After we made our way back out we enjoyed the little park we had all to ourselves. They even still had the old wooden teeter-totters there. Lots of childhood memories and mishaps playing on those!

100_4418.jpg100_4417.jpg

The site being down created a great mother/daughter day and hubby was able to catch up on some well needed sleep. The end and thanks for the cointest!

Thank you for the cointest! :o

Well....since I couldn't enter for about 40 hours, and since I am addicted to all this, things were not easy!

Thank God I did a lot of things!

I watched a couple of movies in DVD (Illuminatti....), I played with my geocoins (:o), I watched how my new parrot is goind with the other female parrot (I had a pair of small parots but the male died a couple of days ago! I took an other one, that has the same colors with my last one! he is without a name yet... the new parrot is the blue one in the photo! He is young! :o )!

picture00075.jpg

I also tried to choose which of the petrified wood Write Shop Robert sent me, to keep and which to drop in caches (It is so hard to deside!!! Every one is unique!!! I am still working on that!!!) Robert sent some great things as a present to me!!! Coins, casino tokens, a huge pertified wood and smaller pieces, his special coins.... He is amazing!!!! :o You can see some small pieces of the petrified wood in the photo (with the banknotes! These are just some of them! I got 24!!!), and the huge piece too! close to the huge piece of petrified wood, I put a USA quarter so you can see the size!!! The photo was taken with my mobile phone (I do not have a digital camera now!)so...

picture00076-1.jpg

Except that, I Played with a geo token and a pathtag that arrived in a letter from Sunsetmeadowlark (winning from a cointest), and I placed in their places in my collection some things I bought from ebay!

I collect coins, banknotes, bonds, shares, food coupons etc (as exonumia - part of currency and economy of a country), militaria things, medals etc!

I got some beautiful german banknotes from the series 1939-1945 that were in use only in occupied countries in europe - one of them was Greece (I am not posting photos because the symbols on them are not .... I hope you understand!), some other banknotes, 2 different food coupons from Lithuania, a Soviet bond, and a soviet medal!!! So I had the time to examine them too! :o

You can see in the photos, the Soviet bond (red one) with the date 1954! It is a goverment bond issued for the development of the economy of the country.

The very small banknote is a Lithuanian 0.20 Talonas from 1991, that has an error (not cut properly and you can see on the right, the yellow part of the other banknote!!!)!

The other 2 with the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4... are the food coupons!

They are from Lithuania, with the dates 1992 and 1993! these years Lithuania was not at its best! People had very difficult times! the goverment desided to print these Monthly coupons and give them to the people!!! Each coupon was seperated in 4 parts! One for every week!!!

People were cuting the part ofthe week and they were taking with it the food they were allowed to have, to pass the week!!!! Oh boy!!!!

The 1992 one is from July, and the 1993 is from February! Both are unused!

At last, you can see the Soviet medal! I like medals a lot!! this is the Veteran of Labour soviet medal! It was given for exellent and honest work, for the country! It was mostly a civilian medal, for scientists, artists, farmers... it is a very comon medal, but I love it! :o

8696c61b.jpg

I wrote a little the greek part of my second story for the online geocacher magazine.... and....I tried something else but I was not lucky! I tried to play a game from BigFish.com, but the site was down for maintanse!!! :)

As you can see, I tried to be busy! :o

Tried for an hour to figure out why my internet connection was down (it was working fine the whole time). We are at our family's shore house for the long weekend, so we went fishing. Caught a baby shark, a small blue fish, and a small flounder. No fish for dinner tonight.

Not much into this twitter thing yet, but got an update from Facebook.

I had heard through the grapevine about the fire so knew the site wouldn't be up for awhile. We decided to take a drive to a provincial park near to us and pick up my season's pass. Then we had our lunch and launched our boat for a nice sightseeing cruise around Pidgeon River. It was the first time putting the boat in the water this season (amazingly enough) and my two and half year old son LOVED it! Though it was very windy, my husband was still able to get a sunburn...ouch! He should know better!

It was a great day. Thanks for the cointest!

I had no idea about the fire. My dad (Opatogo) had surgery a few days before, and I had been away from home for most of the week in the hospital with him. I was able to bring him home on Friday, and completely missed the day the site went down.

Happily, I knew nothing about the shut down until 10:00 Saturday night. My final log on was Thursday afternoon when I loaded my GPS with a bunch of caches. Then I loaded the kids and off we went for a weekend of family time and caching in St Louis.

On the drive down we found a few caches and then spent a straight 12 hours at the city museum and then found a few caches on the way to the hotel. On the 4th of July it was pouring rain when we got up but we still stopped to get 2 caches before heading to the science center and later to the zoo once the rain stopped. More time to squeeze in a few more caches and short hikes. Rain held off until we started driving back home but were still able to get a few more P&Gs.

I was lucky, I PLANNED in advance. If I had waited to load the caches, I would have ended up trying to get on the computer all night. I don't twitter.

Excuse Me GC was down?????

OK sorry, but is human nature to be in denial when things go OH SO HORRIBLY WORNG.

Many of you, at least half, will sympathize with my plight the other half will say well the first half know what the other half will say…..

I got to the computer to tie up a few loose ends for an upcoming camping trip, get the Earthcache coordinates, and requirements, double check all caches were not muggled, etc….

The State park in Hocking Hills Ohio, offers at least 10 Earthcahe’s within a 10 mile radius, a true Cache Rich environment. :o

WHAT WHAT oh that D@MN Microsoft the update to IE 8 has just caused my system to go into the dumper, oh that page works, that page works, that page works, no not GC, well let’s get a few Waymarks…AUGHHHHHHHH.

So I check my laptop still nothing although I updated to IE 8 on that one as well, so I fire up the Daughters machine, great IE 7 so I am saved…….

OH NO what will I do no, a small voice says Dad what the matter? I look and tell him, before the last syllable is out I hear me say DON’T TELL MOM. :o

As you can guess I was to have all of the cache details printed, all caches loaded into the handheld, and have the Nuvi programmed with caches and parking locations long before this point as we are leaving for camping on Monday, Saturday is July 4th, we will be gone all day and we have a Wedding to attend on Sunday.

I AM TOAST….. :)

So I decided well I better try getting the rest of the camping items on my list done before something else goes south.

Ok so I;

Filled the truck with gas, OUCHHHHHHH

Finish packing the truck

Packed the cooler (water, pop or soda, adult beverages)

Dropped out of site to check GC.com………

Got the bikes loaded

Helped the wife and kids pack the trailer

Packed the hiking gear, caching supplies what I could

Dropped out of site to check GC.com………

Checked all tire pressures

Cut the grass

Dropped out of site to check GC.com………

Packaged some items sold on E-bay

Wrapped and packaged my Birthday Mission

Helped my Son wrap his Birthday Mission

Dropped out of site to check GC.com………

The next day, still no GC.com, I am getting worried here for what is happening out on the West Coast; hopefully everything is OK nothing on the news so good.

But as for me I am looking at a bad situation….

I make the kids breakfast, great morning…

That little voice asks did you get the cache information Dad?

SHHHHHHHH

We head out to make sure that all camping items are packed.

Dropped out of site to check GC.com………

Wait there is some life, no looks like something but not enough

Head out and play a bit of Football with the kids

We have to get ready for the July 4th party

Dropped out of site to check GC.com………

YEAHHHHHHHH…….

I am back in business, I can still get the information needed.

The upside all of the camping gear is packed and we are ready to go early Monday.

The 4th of July celebrations were great with no worries of getting everything ready for Monday.

We can attend the Wedding later today with no need to rush home early, maybe that is not so good.

Birthday Missions are ready to go.

E-bay sales are ready to go

And best of all I got an ATTA-BOY for getting all of the work done without being told, I did however get asked what I would have done if I could not have gotten all of the cache information printed and downloaded….

P.S. I did check there is a Wi-Fi spot at the campground………

Thanks for the Cointest……

I do not have any pictures but me with that look of terror on my face might not be good to see.

luckycharmer,

I hope my Wife does not read your post....Thanks for showing off PLANNING in ADVANCE who does such a thing.....

I tied up loose strings fo my son's trip and waited for KD1EJ to come up, after a few extra hours in holiday traffic, he made it. We ate rested and at the crack of midnight, My brother and my son headed out for their Road Trip out west. It was a good time for GC to be down for me as I had more important things to do.

Thanx for the cointest,

Dad had some time off to get ready for an upcoming camping trip...

I asked if we could go get a few caches, he told me that he could not get onto www.geocaching.com.

I asked why he mumbled something and said DON'T TELL MOM?????

So I got to do many things like:

Go with dad to fill the truck with gas

Help pack the truck

Help pack the cooler

Help get the bikes loaded

Helped pack the trailer

Helped check all tire pressures

Helped packaged some E-bay items

Helped Dad package his Birthday Mission

Wrapped my Birthday Mission

Next day

Dad made breakfast, great morning…

Played Football with the Dad and my Sister

Headed for the July 4th party

So not caching was not all that bad, but next week we will make up for the past few days.

My car's in such bad conditoin that I haven't been going caching for a while. I spent the weekend playing EverQuest II and working on projects related to the game and furniture that you can make in it to decorate your house or Guild Hall. I also read a book when I needed a break from the computer/game. And I walked to the mailbox a dozen times every hour or two checking to see if I got anymore geocoins in the mail. Only got coins Friday all week. :) I'm still waiting for 17 or more coins.

Thank you for the cointest!

Well I guess I was one of the lucky ones, as My family was planning on attending an event in Ontario. GC1TY6Y

So we (like good little geocachers), planned ahead and d/loaded the info for the event including surrounding caches a couple of days before the "crash".

The event went off with out a hitch,a great day of canoeing and caching.

So we did not have to sweat it out waiting for the servers to come alive again.

Neither did Cachers in and around our town have to worry because,

As the operator of the L & A Cachers blog, I keep an up to date GPX file available for people to download. It is the closest 100 caches from Napanee, Ontario (Our home town).

Just in case of a Geocaching server failure, or just to make it easier for cachers coming to our town.

Visit us at http://landacachers.blogspot.col <<< change the l to an m to goto the site, changed it to kill the live link.

As was said before since GC.com was down so no caching for us….

Had fun watching Dad go back and forth between chores and the computer, worrying Mom would bust him.

So I sat in my room planning what I will be doing form my dance classes, I need to pick the music, costumes, and choreograph routines for my classes.

So I listened to songs on my Ipod, down to three or four.

Searched on-line for costume ideas, getting somewhere here.

Started the choreography of the routines, still need to know how many girls I will be teaching so I can get the balance correct.

I have written all the ideas down for later review.

Laughed some more at Dad.

In the afternoon I got to practice many of my Martial Arts forms, getting ready to test for my Black Belt.

Laughed some more at Dad. :)

Next day

Laughed some more at Dad. :o

Dad made breakfast, great morning with him and my Brother…

Played Football with Dad and my Brother

Headed for the July 4th party

coman123,

This is a great idea I wonder how many caching org's do this:

My parents were RVing near me, so Eli and I took an hour drive to go visit them! I was hoping to geocache along the way and do some caching with them (they cache too!) but since the site was down, it was not meant to be!

We had a lovely lunch with them and it was great catching up.

Then we headed home, and a friend of ours had to get rid of their rabbit due to landlord issues. We said we'd give it a shot in our household, and so that night, Obi Bun Kenobi came to live with us!

obincats.jpg

He's a BIG BUNNY! 15 lbs! That's a dog carrier he's in! Tally is the grey cat on top, and Kita is the tabby in front. They are getting along great!

He looks like an ink-blot test!

It's been different getting used to the house bunny, but so far, so good. :) And I will forever remember the day he came into our house as The Day The Geocaching Site Was Down!!

Oh you lucky duck....we rented a log cabin last year for a couple days in Hocking Hills and did some of the earth caches there....loved them. Hope you get a chance to check out Old Mans Cave that is just awesome to walk through and Ash Cave that has a waterfall that falls over from above and indian writings on the walls.

Have a great trip : )

Oh and to get back on topic we went fishing for a few hours, or should I say went and fed the fish in the lake for a few hours  , then came home, got cleaned up, went to the local carnival and had hot sausage and cotton candy then came home and watched a movie. Nice day : )

Mowed the lawn, checked GC "1 More Time" ...loaded up an old PQ that had Paddle caches we have been putting off and hand a great day on several hidden lakes (dropped a 5 star kayaking coin) . We paddled & cached with a couple of our caching friends... did not see another soul all day! We finished the 4th with some King Crab legs at a local eatery and watched a great fireworks show. Overall, a GREAT DAY!

Looking around my home, I thought I should be doing some laundry, ironing, vacuuming, etc., but I took off in the misty fog to do some cache maintenance and restocking. Planned on hiking to both my caches, but only got to one. It was wet and humid in the woods. The rocks and roots were slimey and slippery, and NOT inhaling mosquitoes was almost impossible. Of course, as soon as I returned, I was back on my PC checking the GC site again and again..

Oh, it was really hard! At the beginning, I sat in front of my computer and always pushed the refreshing button, always full of hope that it will work with the next push. After some time, I realized that that would not work... So I started to reflect about a cointest that I wanted to start and publish when the forums would work again, just like you started thinking about a cointest :o (Today I published it :o )

And I started searching for other geocaching forums in the www so that my addiction could be satisfied :)

I started looking for entries in the www that explain what had happened with the geocaching.com homepage. I found the explanation (fire in the server rooms, the water to put out the fire had killed the power supply for the servers).

And I celebrated my birthday the last second days :o

But I must say, without the homepage being online, there definitely something is missing in a heavy way!!!

Thanks for the cointest :o

Thankfully I had planned ahead a little bit and had downloaded a couple of PQ's before the site went down. So I gathered up the rest of the team (Tamster56, Johnslady56 and DJAlan) and we headed out for a 50 cache power run. Had a good time finding all those caches, but we had to wait until the following day to log them all on the gc.com site. Got to help my brother (DJAlan) celebrate his 100th find! Knowing that he might hit this goal on this day I had already purchased a 100 finds geocoin and pin set for him and presented it to him after we finished caching for the day!

After answering some emails about "can you get in?" and then checking myself, I got on with what I had planned to do before the tragedy hit. I donated blood at the local American Red Cross and the sticker told eveyone to be nice to me that day. I made sure they did! Then I did some yard work as it was a beautiful day. I did some caulking and then left for a friend's house. In the evening I attended an event. Looking at that day now it was pretty full....

We were in the car driving about 600 miles. Wife is not into caching, so I had pulled down about 8-10 caches into my iphone, which she had agreed were places where I might be going caching while she was changing the baby diaper, or hitting a rest area, or catching lunch.

Problem was for me that I couldn't check what was near the ONE stop that we made that we didn't have planned.

So what did I do while GC was down? I geocached.

After trying to reach the web site 5 or 6 times, I decided to take a ride (with Heine and Logan,) over to my brother's house to try his computer. After verifying it wasn't my computer (for a change,) I let my dogs play with my brother's dogs for about 1/2 hour and returned home. Remainder of free(?) time was spent cleaning the house, and inside of the RV. Not very exciting.

It sounds like many were on or getting ready for vacation or the long weekend, me I had to work. I did check my emails first tning before leaving for work and as fate would have it I had a request to contact someone thru GC (of course no go) so I left it for later. After getting home and trying to get on, I directed my fustration to visiting other caching sites (COG) where I learned of the fire and it directed me to Jeremy's blog which I followed even once in a while (every thirty mins  ) the rest of the night was spent at home with my wife, dozing on the couch while the tv played (I even slept thru a phone call from work, answered it about a hour & half later).

So no nothing interesting done here not like some of the others. Sorry didn't get a picture of myself sleeping, I would have woken myself up :) .

I didn't even know GC had been down until just now!! We were on a trip to Middle Bass Island and South Bass Island in Lake Erie. We left on Thursday, so I had already got the necessary coordinates. No internet access while we were there. So I guess while GC was down, I was walking around South Bass Island / Put In Bay; went to the top of the Perry's Monument Peace Memorial, and of course, grabbed some caches on the island.

Like some others I spent a good deal of time hitting the refresh button. After figuring out I wasn't getting on anytime soon I decided to place some caches that I had been planning for a while. Its been way too hot and humid here to do much of anything outdoors until this weekend. So out I went to place my caches. I got six placed Now I an waiting with crossed fingers hoping they will be published.

We had a lot of fun! We found a kite store nearby and went to check it out. We got our first power kite and it is loads of fun...until you got knocked on your butt LOL!! But we had a great time flying. Even our little PengoBeky was flying it. She went for a tumble a couple of times...those gusts of winds can drag you a little bit but she couldn't stop laughing and thought it was lots of fun. We also saw a horse parade...that was exciting for PengoBeky who just loves horses. We spent a lot of good family time together and that was what made it so much fun.

I was working on the 9-9-9 geocoins and color list plus some other projects, and I also got some work done on a letterbox hybrid I'm hiding in the local area (I'm building a mesh cage to go in the ammo box, one feature of which is a raised bottom so that if water does get in the cache, the contents are [hopefully] held above it). I was busy enough that I wasn't dyin', per se.

But I was intensely interested in seeing the site come back up (especially since I needed to reference some stuff on the servers for some of my work). So I finally came out of the stone age and figured out how to use Twitter so that I could follow Jeremy's updates.

I did not go outside - LOL! Some cacher I am. ; )

I must admit I didn't know the site was down. Then again I spent from 23 June to 3 July on the road and had caches already loaded from the drive. It was a drive believe me. From San Antonio TX to Colorado Springs CO to deliver my daughter to the capable hands of senior cadets at the US Air Force Academy. Then on to Coeur d'Alene ID to visit my Grandmother. Two days later back to San Antonio. Got in Friday evening, did nothing on the 4th but try to convince myself I was not still driving.

I went Geocaching of course.

I had my PDA loaded and GPS full of points and hit the road to one that had been giving me a fit.

I found it finally and it was a new 5 Star for me.

Then I went on for a long drive down south of me and hit a few others that were a long way apart but needed to thin off the map.

Had a great day geocaching to come home to UH OH!!!!!!!!!!

Where is it?

What happened?

Did I get banned or something?
