rostamama
I am trying to get into geocaching but have become very frustrated. After reading reviews and comments about gpsr features and talking to gpsr user at REI I bought the Garmin eTrex Vista HCx. I am not technically incapable but I'm finding this unit very hard to use and understand. I don't need to be paperless (I actually like print outs as I letterbox too and am used to this), I do want a unit that is very accurate ( I have little kids coming along and don't want to be searching too long). I can spend up to $400 including software but would like to stay at $300 or less. I did not buy the garmin topo map program. Instead I downloaded the free map for my state at gpsfileddepot.com. Does anyone have a suggestion. I need a very simple to understand gpsr that is very accurate. Please help as I am very frustrated and on the verge of just giving up. Thanks, rostamama Quote Link to comment
+fratermus
All GPS are accurate enough for geocaching uses. Commercial/military grade GPS are way, way above the $400 ceiling. If you want something simple this might be the trick. Quote Link to comment
+Bear and Ragged
The Garmin eTrex Vista HCx is a good unit. Just play around with it to get familiar with the controls. Quote Link to comment
+ventura_kids
All the units work similar to the one you chose (and it's a good choice). I took forever to learn my unit (garmin legend) when I started. I suggest you head into the chat room and you can get help LIVE. http://www.clayjar.com/ another good choice is to look up a nearby event in your area. You can get up to speed much quicker if you go cache with someone who has the same type gps as you. Quote Link to comment
+GEO*Trailblazer 1
Garmin Rino 530 HCX. It has all you need and more. I have just got one and it is awesome. It is like the others with a geocaching function in it as well like the Colorado and Oregon. You can find them on sale now for less than 400. Quote Link to comment
rostamama
Thanks for the replies...I think I just need to sit down and mess with it and also the map I downloaded isn't that good, I probably need to get the Garmin topo map. rostamama Quote Link to comment
+fratermus
Might also search youtube for . Sometimes seeing someone else do it first makes it easier. Quote Link to comment
+jjome
I got an eTrek Legend H, which without looking, I am pretty sure is a lower model then yours. It takes a bit of time to get it figured out. However, when I have had no tree cover, it has taken me right to the cache. Quote Link to comment
