+ssoutherngurll Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Hey everyone! Well I am super excited about discovering geocaching!!! I honestly didn't know this existed! Im in southeast Texas and my sister and her boyfriend came down from Iowa and introduced me to it! I am addicted (to say the least)! Seems super fun!!! Anyways, my first day of caching will be on Friday and I can't wait! Just wanted to introduce myself!! Any hints or tips that anyone wants to offer are welcome! (Thanks in advance!) Quote
+webscouter. Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Welcome to the addiction. Best advice, stop looking when you stop having fun. Move on to the next cache and enjoy yourself. Quote

Funny thing is my dad was testing out the GPS we are using Friday so he went to check out a few caches (his first cache hunts as well) in our hometown and he is HOOKED! He couldn't find one and its eating at him. I think he is going back tomorrow to try again! Its hilarious! I love it!!! Quote
+RayandLynn Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Welcome to Geocaching, it's the clean/dirty addiction!! We went to Vancouver to visit our daughter, and we couldn't be in the city without going on a hunt! Our daugher and son-in-law now wants a GPS. The reason I include dirty in this is because we went caching on the weekend, and it was a damp day in the bush. By the time we got home, I was pulling twigs out of my hair, and we had mud all over our clothes. Needless to say we had a BLAST!!!!!!!!!!! Quote
chillin209 Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Its funny you will discover hiding places where you would never think to hide something. Quote
+apereira Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 I been doing this for about a month , and is great. if is your first one try to get easy caches, if is in a urban area load few close location so you can keep looking for other caches. It was frustrating for me, no one show me anything. First I recommend watching few youtube videos about it, it will help you a lot. Quote
+fratermus Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Any hints or tips that anyone wants to offer are welcome! (Thanks in advance!) Welcome to the obsession! My tips: * make special note of cache logs that mention PI (poison ivy). Look up poison ivy on the web if you don't remember what it looks like. * bring a pencil/pen and spare batts for the gps * when you stop the car to get out and caches, either mark it with a waypoint or maybe have a waypoint called "PARKING" and reuse it. * stop looking at the GPS when you get within 50' or so * it gets easier with time.... +Jeep4two Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Welcome to the addiction. Tips? I like webscouter's advice. Never be afraid to DNF a cache, and don't forget to log all your cache hunts, founds and DNF's just the same. It's all part of the experience. Oh - and don't forget to check for ticks when you get back in from a long day of caching. Just had a run in with one myself. . . yuck! Quote

Poison Ivy thats important, I had a itch on my feets that lasted almost 4 weeks. I am still using lotions to repair the skin. Becarefull with that, and remember the saying “leaves of three, beware of me” But this is not going to keep me away from geocaching , actually it makes it more interesting ... Quote
+Dreamer158 Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Any hints or tips that anyone wants to offer are welcome! (Thanks in advance!) I started doing this about 3 months ago. Now I can’t wait for my weekend to get out there. I’ll spend at least one day before the weekend down loading caches and printing out info sheets. Hint: I print out the info sheets before I go. It’s hard to remember the description of every cache. When out 50’ to 40’ I take a line of sight and start walking in that direction. Sometimes you can walk right to the cache and sometimes you will have to look around. Look for something that is not natural. Like a pile of rock, tree branches ect. I don’t know what your area is like. But I live near Las Vegas; all of my caches are in the middle of nowhere or up in the mountains. I’m either hiking or on my ATV looking for these addicting things Happy Caching Quote
