Indoor cache

Recommended Posts

I realise that GPS reception is rubbish inside but I was thinking of putting a virtual cache inside a free entry public building that has a large glass roof. You would need to take a photo or email info taken from the place to get the log. Any thoughts. Has anybody seen similar?

Seen similar.

Unfortunately (or not, depending on your viewpoint) virtual caches haven't been allowed for some years now.

There are still old virtuals about, but no new ones will be published.

There used to be a micro inside the big shopping centre in Newcastle (Metro Centre?) - it might still be there for all I know. But yes, it's been heard of and approved.

But as Keehotee says, unfortunately virtual aren't approved any more, so the ideaas you suggested in your OP wouldn't be allowed.

Indeed, virtuals are no longer approved, all caches must have a logbook to sign. You also need to demonstrate that GPS usage is required. Having a cache located in a building and giving directions inside to where it is hidden would be fine but to get to the start point saying something like, "go to the library steps in the High Street of Anytown" and providing the coords for the steps wouldn't be acceptable as anyone could find that location without a GPS. Creating an offset cache with clues in the building and cache somewhere outside (for which you need a GPS) or an offset outside to get clues to a cache within a building would probably be OK. The relevant guideline is, ".... GPS usage is an essential element of geocaching. Therefore, although it is possible to find a cache without a GPS, the option of using accurate GPS coordinates as an integral part of the cache hunt must be demonstrated for all physical cache submissions.".

If you've got an idea you can always email your nearest friendly reviewer and ask for their advice! "If you have a novel type of cache that "pushes the envelope" to some degree, then it is best to contact your local reviewer and/or Groundspeak before placing and reporting it on the Geocaching.com web site"
