+Birdman-of-liskatraz
The Birdman-of-Liskatraz , from oddly, Liskeard in Cornwall, has a bit of a reputation for hiding caches in empty 1 Kg sliced peach jars. Anyway - I have a cupboard full of such jars - empty of course- but at our “Picnic in the Rain” event in June,I intend dishing some out to local cachers and offering the challenge as detailed below. It then crossed my mind that it maybe rather good fun to open the challenge to anyone in the UK (or worldwide even!) The challenge(s) are outlined below: Using a 1kg or 825 Gm (+/- 11%) plastic fruit jar (Well washed out I’ve had no problems with most of these), a cache must be hidden before the UK 2nd Mega Event on August 9th 2009. The challenge will end on December 31st 2009 and two winners will be declared, shortly afterwards - in the following categories: The Most Found Cache Award - For the cache found by the most cachers. The cache can only be found once by each cacher. Bribery is an acceptable tactic - stuffing your cache full of used £5 notes is just fine. The Least Found Cache Award - This must be found at least once. Unfound caches will not qualify. Evil puzzles, impossible locations and clever disguises are all positively encouraged. To enter: Set your cache and get it published Include a photo of your cache container on the cache page. The cache must be named: BPJC: Name of cache Send a message to Birdie via his profile once your cache is set. In the event of a tie Birdie’s decision will be final. Preference will be given to cachers showing ingenuity and imagination in cache setting. Other Rules Birdie is entitled to enter himself as are members of his family - I have a cracking idea - you don't stand a chance. A cacher may enter one or both categories as many times as they wish. Any type of cache is acceptable, Traditional, Letterbox Hybrid, Multi etc - Though Virtual Peach jars are excluded and obviously Peach Jar Event caches (Including Mega Events) are also excluded. Winners will get. Something nominal - a framed certificate and a Geocoin (of my choosing) possibly. If any caching suppliers wish to add an item to the prizes, that would be just great. It's just a spot of fun Edited June 20, 2009 by Birdman-of-liskatraz Quote Link to comment
+HazelS
What if we can't get to your event to get an "official Jar"???? Quote Link to comment
+Birdman-of-liskatraz
Most major Supermarkets keep a selection of such items. Morrisons certainly have a range in 825 Gram size. Asda and Tescos keep their own label ranges as well. You'll also find 1 Kg jars with green lids. Quote Link to comment

Anyway - I have a cupboard full of such jars - empty of course Now I know what to look for when I got searching for Birdie caches Sliced peaches - surely Cornwall has 'fresh and juicy peaches' with all that sun (and rain!) PS - I always think of 'jars' as being glass, so another thing I have learnt today (and wiki agrees) - thanks Quote Link to comment
+Birdman-of-liskatraz
Yep - if you said Jam Jar to me - I'd think glass. But these are like a large jam jar but plastic - so i called them a Jar without thinking about it. Like you, I've just checked with Wiki "A jar is a large, approximately cylindrical container made of glass or clay, or plastic." So there we go... I've seen and eaten fresh peaches in Yugoslavia (and it still was Yugoslavia at the time) - I wonder if they would grow here? Quote Link to comment

"Using a 1kg or 825 Gm (+/- 11%) plastic fruit jar" So peach, pears, prunes, pineapple, the mixed one, Morrissons orange segments or Fortnum and Masons Kumquat and Passion fruit are all eligible. +Tavisman
Can we have more categories to enter? Something like most travel bug visits, most DNFs, or total up all the find totals for all finds. Quote Link to comment

+Write and Mane
Just done the weekly shop, never bought one of these before. Quite the wrong time of year for this challenge, what with the fresh redcurrants, gooseberries and raspberries to be consumed. Oh forgot to mention the rhubarb. We were planning to place a new cache following our fairly recent 1,000 find. Got the jar, got the cache location, now, got to work the puzzle? Quote Link to comment

+Tavisman
...a cache must be hidden before the UK 2nd Mega Event on August 9th 2009. Just a bit confused (sorry). Can I submit my entry anytime from reading this post untill 9 August 2009? Do we start the competition from 9 August 2009, or if will the finds be recorded if I get my entry published and found now? BTW, I bought my containers and I'm preparing my caches. This is a brilliant idea. I have never bought this product before and I enjoyed the pears in juice _ and it's part of 5-a-day _ everyone's a winner! Quote Link to comment

+Tavisman
Hey I'm in the race! I guessed that I would need a unique selling point (USP) so I tried several ideas, and they all failed during testing (including spelling mistakes ). I wish I have the creativity of The Blorenges, their idea so fantastic and yet so simple. Anyway, I decided my USP would be to provide a service for travelling hitchhikers (travel bugs and geocoins) _ a TB teleport to Australia. Please welcome into the race: BPJC: A Pie, a Cup of Tea and a Kip. So far I'm winning The Least Found Cache Award! Edited July 8, 2009 by Tavisman Quote Link to comment
