+Whimppeys Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I have really done it now. I was deleting and adding maps to my oregon 400t last night and I managed to delete my Topo map. I have successfully load CN on the micro SD so I do have something to work with. I did a diagnostic test and I see that the map checksum has failed. When I look at available maps, CN is there but no Topo. Does anybody have any recommendations? Thanks Whimppeys Quote
+Red90 Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 If you deleted the map, you need to contact Garmin to fix it. They can do it without sending in the unit. Quote
+Whimppeys Posted June 7, 2009 Author Posted June 7, 2009 Thanks Red. That's good news. Ill get back and let you know how it turns out.. Quote
MtnHermit Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 If you truly deleted the installed Topos, you'll need to send the OR to Garmin for re-installation. Of course if you backed up all your files, simply re-install from those backup files. Quote

+Buddaman Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 I've done that. I bought mine at REI, so i just took it to the store and got another one. garmin wanted me to send it in. Quote

When you hook your unit to the PC via the USB, you'll see the file in \\Computer\Garmin Oregon (X:)\Garmin folder. The file isn't "locked" or anything like that. If you knew anyone that has an Oregon, you could copy their file. Have them burn it to a DVD or something. Maybe ask the people at REI if you can bring your laptop into the store and copy the file from one of their display units. There's no guarantee Gramin can fix the file remotely. If you have to send the unit back to Garmin it'll be gone for several week minimum. Good Luck. Quote
jinj Posted June 7, 2009 Posted June 7, 2009 When you get it back, back it up to a dvd or your PC at the very least. Its kinda funny how its just so easy to delete. Quote

I have managed to perform a binary file compare on the Topo maps from an early generation Oregon 400t with a middle-generation Colorado 400t. The two files compared to be exactly the same, so if you don;t have access to another Oregon 400t, you can use the maps file from a Colorado 400t if you can access one of those. Quote
+Whimppeys Posted June 8, 2009 Author Posted June 8, 2009 Thanks everybody. I have a friend with an Oregon and I'm in the process of obtaining the files. If that doesn't work, I have to send the unit into Garmin. They indicated that I would be without the unit for about 2 weeks. They didn't offer to provide remote download of the file. I appreciate the backup advise. I didn't know I could do this. I will Whimppeys Quote

+Whimppeys Posted June 17, 2009 Author Posted June 17, 2009 I wanted to thank all of you. I borrowed a friends Oregon and copied the files to my Oregon. I now have CN and Topos are back. I didn't back up yet. But I will tonight. This forum saved me about three weeks without the GPS. Quote
+Entropy512 Posted June 17, 2009 Posted June 17, 2009 Yup. The fact that the Garmin behaves as a bog-standard USB Mass Storage device is both a blessing and a curse. Con: It's possible to delete critical data (like the preloaded topo map) Pro: It's easy to back up critical data It's easy to update the maps If you have a backup, you can do funky tricks if for some reason you want to temporarily replace the onboard topo maps. No base maps Problem is, I don't know anyone that has the Oregon 400T or the Colorado....does anyone have the map files in a spot that they can be shared or sent? I would be eternally grateful! I have been out of commission for a long time (moved and got married and got a new job).....now I'm looking forward to getting some caches but have to fix my unit first! Any suggestions? I know this is an older thread but I have to believe people do this bummer move semi-often given house easy it is! I have a micro-SD with some other maps but they dont' show up either right now (do they rely on the basemaps to display?). I hope I don't have a bigger issue! Quote
+splashy Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 (edited) I can sent the file via we transfer, the basemap i got is about 90Mb I need an email address I can sent the link to, so if you PM me I sent you the link from where you can download it. Edit: You have a PM, turns out I can write to you straight away. Edited September 17, 2013 by splashy Quote
+splashy Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 For the backing up AND much more, use the free JDM tool. It's a gem. http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html Quote
+splashy Posted September 17, 2013 Posted September 17, 2013 Honestly I don't know I think it's only the map(s). With a new Gps I always just backup the whole Garmin manually. Ctrl A, Ctrl C, Ctrl V on a new computer Folder. That way I'm sure everything will be there when I need it. Quote
Michael Cook Posted September 18, 2013 Posted September 18, 2013 It can backup everything. You can choose to backup the whole device, or just the maps. Quote
