+AtlantaGal Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Kind of an interesting email I woke up to today... I found one of your Geocoins by accident in front of an elementary school: GeoJellies Big Bean Series Parrothead Punch. I'm not a geocacher, just got online to find out what this is all about. What do I do with the coin? Here's my reply to them. I hope they'll email me back. Hi! I don't know if it's activated or not. Meaning it might belong to someone else now. Those items are made to travel from cache to cache. If you got onto the geocaching website to find me, then I'm hoping you now know what geocaching is :-) Can you go back to geocaching.com, look on the left side menu where it says "trackable items?" If you click that menu link, a form page comes up. You'll see geocoins, travel bugs and promotionals explained across the top. What you have is a geocoin that I made, but traded to other people. There is a 6-digit alpha numeric code on that jellybean coin. Enter that code into the first form line titled "Enter the Tracking Number of the Item" and press the "track" button. Now, you'll see one of two things. A short error message that says "item is not activated, activate it now" OR you'll get a full page of info for the coin you have in your hand. If you get the latter, the owner of the coin is listed at the top of the page and clicking their linked name will bring you to a profile page (like you saw with me when you looked me up). I'd then ask that you contact that person, much like you contacted me because the item you found belongs to them. If the coin is unactivated. Just keep it or give it to a child or whatever. I won't know who it belongs to. Let me know what you find out. It's always interesting when someone who doesn't geocache finds a traveling item like you did. Marianne (AtlantaGal) Quote

+Jackalgirl Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Ditto -- it's absolutely awesome that the person was curious enough to find out about the coin and honest enough to contact you about it. Very, very interesting! Quote

+AlliedOz Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 (edited) Great story I can not wait to see if it goes further. This reminded me of a situation that happened in my area recently. This is more about a cache BUT a geocoin went missing, so it counts right Some great cachers were staying on my front lawn in their caravan to do some serious caching in my area and had been having some trouble with finding a cache close by despite being there at least 4 times and having assurance from the cache owner they did not look hard enough made me laugh they are approaching 6,000 caches (they are currently #2 in Australia), they know how to look. Anyway once he got the time the cache owner went to check, identified it was muggled and this was his report I though was fitting for this thread. From the maintenance log Well, this was weird. I prepared the new container, log book, etc, and headed out during a break in the rain to find a new spot for the cache. There's been a lot of vehicle traffic in the reserve since I first placed the cache there, and the number of placement choices is way down, but I picked what I reckoned was a good spot, put the new container in place, sat the gpsr on top, and started grabbing extra leaf litter from the other side of my chosen tree to improve the concealment. To my surprise I came across a very familiar grey bag containing an even more familiar container. My immediate thought was "Wow, 75 metres of cache creep", but then I opened up the container. There was a letter inside which basicaly read I found this box hidden in the bottom of my 10 year old son's wardrobe, and when I asked him about it he hedged around the subject but as far as I can tell he was with one or more of his less desirable "mates" and they found it in the bush at the end of the street. His "mates" took some toys and some wine glass markers (why?) and left him with the rest. He knew I'd ask questions if I saw him with any of it, so I'm surprised he hung on to it, but it seems to be fairly intact except for the missing toys and markers. I've punished him by no X Box for two weeks and his pocket money for the month of May (5 weeks worth because payday is Friday) is all going to the Salvo's Red Shield Appeal. He's accepted his punishment with good grace and I think he's learnt a valuable lesson. I spoke to a friend of mine who is into this cashing (sic) thing and she said sometimes a missing cash it replaced and sometimes it isn't, but she did say that a casher named WanderingAus lives somewhere near me and if it was one of his he would probably replace it (I didn't give her any specifics, but she picked that) somewhere nearby. I didn't put the box back where they found it in case his mates went back there, so I tried to think where else would someone hide it. I hope you find it. I'm sorry my son was mixed up in this, I know it's only a small matter but it's important he learn to respect other people's property. Signed (A Mum)" Nice one mum. I wish she had got the wine markers, they were 1/2 decent we had placed them in the cache several months prior Edited June 6, 2009 by AlliedOz Quote

+AtlantaGal Posted June 7, 2009 Author Posted June 7, 2009 No word. So I don't know if I'm going to hear anything back. Hopefully just used a spam account for the email requirement to sign up on gc.com and hasn't checked it yet. Quote
