diamond54
I am totally new to this although I have gone out a number of times with a co worker who has a gps. My question is this: I am going to be buying a gps soon and am planning a trip with the family to Sweden this summer. Will I encounter any problems trying to geo cache over there with a unit that I buy here? (I really know very little about all this!) Thanks. Quote Link to comment

Edit : The only thing you need to watch out for is if you use rechargable batteries. According to this Sweden's outlets are 2 round pins, and supplies 230V at 50 Hz. jholly
Following on ... Units sold in the US have US base maps. Naturally these are not very good outside of the US. There are a number of free maps you can download for garmin units. But maps are not critical in finding caches, they might be nice for driving around. As far as the rechargeable batteries, it is not so much the batteries as the chargers. If you don't expect heavy use then alkaline batteries will be fine. Jim Quote Link to comment

Jim I remember from the last time we were there that the outlets are different, so I will allow for that. Thanks for the advice. I am looking at buying a garmin etrex, just don't know which one. +Babsbaby
I am looking at buying a garmin etrex, just don't know which one. I've cached with an Etrex Venture in UK, USA, Thailand, France, Spain, Malta and a few other places - no trouble at all. I don't have mapping on the unit, but I printed out a few Gogglemaps of the areas I was going to so that I had an idea of the caches in the area. Don't forget to take printouts of the cache details if you don't have a PDA - they can be pretty useful in the field. Quote Link to comment
