+Insp Gadget
I just bought an Oregon 300 and am a tad disappointed. It seems that it takes me right past the cache for 20m or so, then says I passed it. Reminds me of my old Magellan. LOL. I am a bit confused over the compass though. The setting is for Auto or Off. What does this do? Which setting is better? Quote Link to comment

Oh, you might consider upgrading to SW V2.98 as well. Congrats on the purchase, you're going to love it. Sam Edited May 22, 2009 by SamSpade47 Quote Link to comment

What does this do? Which setting is better? The settings are: Off - The Electronic compass is always off. You must be moving for your GPSr to use satellite data to determin your heading and the heading to the cache. Auto - The Electronic compass is on when stationary or moving very slow speeds, but automatically turns off once your speed goes above the internal limit (around 2-3 mph). Which is better? Well, I guess that depends upon what you are looking for and how you want to use your GPSr compass. I leave mine set to "Auto" and since I have it calibrated, and hold it level, it does a decent enough job pointing me in the correct direction to the cache. As with most experienced cachers, I actually find myself looking at my GPSr screen less and less. As I approach an area I know that the cache is within 200 feet, I start to look in the general direction and looking for likely hiding places. I have found myself walking nearly a quarter mile to a cache location before looking at the GPSr screen only to find that the cache was within 70-100 feet of where I was then I might not look at the GPSr again until after I find the cache... Download the Oregon_WebUpdater__298.gcd file from here: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/file/vi...pdater__298.gcd Rename the file to: gupdate.gcd then copy it to your /garmin directory on your Oregon. Reboot and it will load the 2.98 SW Look here: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Versions#toc10 Specifically at the GCD Based Upgrades section for more information. sam Quote Link to comment
