+priusjames Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 (edited) I tried to do a search before asking, so if this is an old/tired question, forgive me! Is it considered good/bad form to initially post a cache as a "Premium Members only" cache for some period of time, then to downgrade/change it to a "standard/anybody" listing? Is this done regularly, sometimes, never? If it's common, how long is it customarily left for Premium Members only before being changed? It seems fair and reasonable to me, but I'm new to the game and tend to think Big Picture. It seems fair to give Premium Members (like me) "First Whack" at finding and logging the cache, then to open it up to all...unless "special" circumstances might apply: Super nice location that we hold near and dear and only want to share with some Semi-Private location that doesn't want to see massive traffic Special hides with SWAG or other valuables refreshed frequently I don't know...that's why I'm asking! p.s. I know cache is mis-spelled in the title...no idea why I spelled it that way, didn;t notice it until after I posted, and now I can;t figure out how to modify that line or delete the entire post and start over...nice...) +StarBrand Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Yes - its done all the time. I have listed 4 different as Pm and then changed them to regular status a few months later. Totally up to you how you want to handle it. Quote
+Bear and Ragged Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 Often done in the UK after the cache has been found a couple of times. Quote

Perfectly acceptable practice. I initially did this to one if my cache because it had a swag theme and I wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be raided my any local riff-raff. However, after thinking about it, I think my fears were overblown since the location is just difficult enough to get to that other caches would be more inticing for ner-do-well before mine ever is. So, it's a normal cache now, and I haven't had any problems with it. And....more people are now able to enjoy it! Edited May 21, 2009 by PhxChem Quote
kc8sfq Posted May 21, 2009 Posted May 21, 2009 So why are all the caches in my local area PREMIUM??? This pretty well kills the hobby for me. Thanks to who ever made this decision. Quote

There are many different theories on this. When it comes down to it, it is the owners decision. Feel free to ask them. I am sure that if you are a cacher with a fair number of finds they would send you the info and let you search for it. There is even a way to log it too. You can always pay the money to become a premium member. I go the 3 months for $10 route. Not so bad and you aren't stuck paying for a year and only using it for a few months. Quote

Sock puppet account trying to stir up the PMO cache haters again? Please, not so soon. Give it another 2 weeks. Quote
ao318 Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I make mine open to all after a few weeks. I believe those that pay for a membership should get the first few finds. After a few weeks I open the cache to everyone. Quote
+BlueDeuce Posted May 22, 2009 Posted May 22, 2009 I adopted a PM cache and told the previous owner I was going to change it. He was fine with that and had kinda forgot it was a PM. The public was happy with the change. Go for it. Quote
