Know the Geocaching site was down for a while this evening,.

 

Why am I seeing my newest caches in the United Kingdom, South Wales area as being in Afghanistan.

 

Tried several times without success.

 

What is going on?

I'm getting the same for Scotland.

 

Plus if you do a 'search all' for the UK you actually get a list of caches in Afghanistan.

The site is still experiencing problems and is running slow. There is a thread in the main forums about it. I've stopped doing anything for the time being and am off to bed! I'm sure normal service will be resumed in the morning.

It could just be Moote going to extreme lengths to make his point!!

I personally think it is a foreign exchange program of some sort, so that caches can learn about other cultures by swapping countries for a while ;-)

 

Maybe it was a test run by Groundspeak before they announce it as a new Geocaching rule?

It's Groundspeak testing their new format.

Spurred on by the knowledge that from next year GPS will no longer function, they've introduced a new random number algorithm to place any new caches arbitrarily - based on size, difficulty and terrain rating.

 

The reasoning being that if the World outside of Geocaching sees a more even spread of caches across the world, they won't be so upset.

So, from Jan 1st 2010, micros will have a weighting added to their co-ordinates to take them closer to the polar regions, whilst larger traditional type caches will end up nearer the equator.

Seems to be back to 'normal' if anything in geocaching is can ever be thought of like that.

 

Thanks for all the various comments, whilst I found it interesting to know that Afghanistan has some caches, I would hardly regard them as the nearest to Cardiff!

No, it's not just you - I'm getting the same. A search from my home co-ords is working properly, though.

Yes we can search from home coords too. But we like to search for new puzzle caches throughout UK.

 

Hopefully it will be fixed soon. Afghanistan is outside our normal caching area.

It's a bit short on puzzle caches too - there are only 2 out of 82 caches...
