+NorthWes Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 An absolutely fascinating article - very timely too, as I'm visiting the Four Corners on May 27th. Quote
+king.hubi Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 Very interesting article. Many thanks! An absolutely fascinating article - very timely too, as I'm visiting the Four Corners on May 27th. I have been there last year in August. Make sure you log the right one. It's funny to see that a lot of people always log the old one which is gone/destroyed many moons ago. And if you have a little bit more time just take a short stroll into the desert. There is another benchmark not far away called BOUNDARY MI COR 330 CO NM. You can't miss it. King Hubi Quote

holograph Posted May 18, 2009 Posted May 18, 2009 This makes me think, for the thousandth time, that the NGS is undoubtedly the most friendly, responsive organization in our government, and the one providing the most value for our tax dollars. I'm sure that the individuals at the NGS probably would have preferred not to spend time on rebutting an erroneous news story, but they managed to turn it into yet another fascinating education opportunity. Thanks! Quote
+pgrig Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Nice write-up by NGS. Just one complaint. NGS said "the monument provides a mechanism for geospatial professionals (land surveyors, engineers, etc.) to access this framework ...." Wouldn't it have been easy to add "and benchmark-hunting hacks" after the ) ? Aren't we, even with all of our faults, entitled to a little recognition once in a while? Maybe Holograph knows the answer to this one: of the total of all reported recoveries of NGS benchmarks in a recent year, what percentage are attributable to us? Quote
DaveD Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 Geocaching has received recognition in Rhonda Rushing's book about bench marks "Lasting Impressions." From the foreward; "Increasingly, efforts by individuals from the popular pastime of geocaching are also playing a significant role in the attempt to preserve and protect these essential components of our national infrastructure.
