Issues with forum Timming out?

Recommended Posts

I'm guessing I'll get a sting of ""Works fine from here"" but here goes...

Anyone else have problems with the forum getting slow and sometimes just timming out when you submit a post or a reply or click next page of new posts???

It seems to do it to me more often than not latley... Day (right now) and in the evenings too... From work and home... PC or laptop...

Besides the site the only thing I could find in common was the last hop(s) in path between Point A and Point B

I'd guess it was a network hardware issue, not software, but I've been wrong before...

If they do upgrade to something else, I really hope it Vbulliten... Best Forum software i've ever seen and I belong to a lot to Forums...

Its about 180.00 for the forum software... I'd even be willing to chip in...

Be nice to have a definition of "soon".

Agreed! It is getting to the point that I'm loosing faith. We keep hearing soon but the forums keep on doing all the same annoying things that they did the first day I found them.

vBulletin is nice yes - but in this windows environment? I do not know. Will it do the trick? Get the forum off of a windows server and install CentOS on a high grade server with tons of RAM and this place would fly.

I am certain the folks up at HQ are professionals and will do the homework necessary to get a highly scalable piece of forum software and the necessary hardware to make it run well. Modern microsoft server platforms are as robust as anything else out there. No need to bash the platform.

So far I can't see that they even care about forum reliability. It hasn't changed in all the time I've been here. Or rather it has, but not for the better. It started out bad and is just getting worse.

We'll I'm new here so I don't feel right rocking the boat to much or talking bad about anyone...

All I can really say is I like this place alot and hope that with the influx of coments on this issue that they'll do something to improve it...

It would be nice to see someone in an official capacity announce that they know about the issue and then address what they are going to do and some sort of a timeline....

Professional - that word does not impress me. Many a professional is not too professional. Ops I better shut up......

There are plenty of posts, but Groundspeak Lackeys do not post to every single thread that asks a question about the same issue. They rely on the community to spread known answers (see StarBrand's example, above).

Here are some fairly recent posts from Lackeys about the plan to move to the new forum software:

Moun10Bike, April 30, 2009

OpinioNate, April 16, 2009

Elias, January 16, 2009

The Waymarking Forums are already running on an early version of Community Server, if you want to see a (sort of) sneak preview. I am sure that converting the main forums is a far bigger undertaking, requiring much testing and configuring.

No doubt the community would point to answers if there were any answers. This community is good at sharing important info. All those post say is we're gonna do something about it. They have been saying that for four months. Some questions remain. Are the hamster wranglers making any progress? Does it look like there is light at the end of the tunnel? And if so is that a good thing or a train?

Such a simple thing to let us know what is going on. Instead they post the party line and keep telling us "there's your answer."

I spent quite a few minutes of my evening searching for those prior posts to which I linked in the above response. I did so in an effort to be helpful and to answer the person who thought there had been no official answer. Not everyone reads every forum thread, and I was happy to help.

When I get reactions like this one, I become less willing to be helpful.

I read the three cited entries but none of them gave much of an indication of time line or priority. I think that's the sort of information people are looking for rather than the it's out there somewhere stuff we usually get. On the other hand its summertime and there's a lot of caching to do... I'll make room for others here and check back in the fall.

Keystone you have been the most helpful representative of GS in the forums. Hands down no question no doubt. Time and time again you have the answers. I'm sorry if I insulted you, it was not my intention.

What I was trying to find out is if progress is being made and if there is any idea of how long a wait we have.

I think you are seeing the frustrations of the community. A lack of any concrete action plan and / or a time line doesn't help much.

And when we see evidence of resources being committed to another product; a product that, according to Jeremy, could introduce millions more to geocaching, that frustration is justified.

It has been made clear that Groundspeak has limited resources and this sort of thing frustrates long term customers and supporters. And it shows in these posts.

I don't know if it helps or not, but here is a sample of the typical timeouts I get

PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 45 seconds exceeded in E:\Inetpub\forums\GC\ips_kernel\class_db_mysql.php on line 457 PHP Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 45 seconds exceeded in E:\Inetpub\forums\GC\sources\ipsclass.php on line 1111

it either does something like that or just sits there for several minutes...

If there is any additional testing or things we can do/gather to assist in this let me know and I will do my best to provide something other that complaints... I'd be glad to help...

Timmah!

There. I timmed out.

I "timmed out" while trying to open this thread, and thought I was going to time out a 2nd time, but just made it.

I'm starting to think that it may be a record locking issue. Very often I see the last poster that is displayed in the forum listing is not really the last poster once the thread finally opens up. Other times, the thread will open, but not the last message, as though the main page knew who the last posting was by, but the actual text of the posting hasn't been written to the database yet.

The problem isn't just the timing out, either. Much more frequently its just a matter of threads taking too long too open. Sometimes it takes so long that it times out, other times it just takes too danged long.
