Team Penguino Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 I just started to geocache and I currently use my Nuvi 205w to find caches but I'm afraid I'm going to drop it and break/scratch it. I want to get a handheld GPS and don't want to spend to much money. Best Buy currently has the eTrex Legend on sale for $100 and includes a case, DVD, and PC cable. Or I could get a yellow eTrex for $70. The Legend doesn't appear to be a high sensitivity model, does that make a difference? It seems like the Legend would be a better deal but I just wanted to ask here because I know I could get a good answer here. Thanks. Quote
+Chuy! Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 (edited) The Legend has a serial cable connection. Most computers today no longer support serial connections. You may have to get a usb-serial adapter. Since you alread have a Nuvi to auto-route, get the Etrex H; the sensitive chip does make a big difference. But, so does a color screen; think about the Venture HC. But, definitely disregard the monochrome Etrex'; they are outdated. Edited April 28, 2009 by Chuy! Quote
+Redwoods Mtn Biker Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Yes, do yourself a favor. Spend a little more and get the Venture HC. The eTrex H is monochrome, cannot accept maps and, unlike other eTrex units, doesn't come with a cable for transferring data between the GPS and your computer. It also lacks the click-stick of the other H-series models, making for a less user-friendly interface. Quote

jmundinger Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 Yes, do yourself a favor. Spend a little more and get the Venture HC. I agree. The Venture HC comes wit a usb cable. By the time you by the serial cable and usb adapter so that you can connect the eTrex H to your computer, the price would be about the same. And, the user interface for the Venture HC is much better. +mcrow Posted April 28, 2009 Posted April 28, 2009 (edited) The Venture HC is the best all around basic GPSr. You can find them for between $88 to $120 on ebay or amazon. Edited April 28, 2009 by mcrow Quote
Rocketsteve Posted May 3, 2009 Posted May 3, 2009 There is a vendor on eBay that is selling a factory refurbished Garmin Venture HC, with a 1 year warranty from Garmin, for just $79.99 (shipping included in the price). If you would rather have a NEW gps unit, there are others on eBay that are selling the Venture HC for as low as $140.00 (shipping included in the price). Good luck with your search! Quote

They essentially seem to be the Venture HC and Summit HC with a greyscale display. But I agree with the others here who suggest the Venture HC, or the Legend H if color isn't important. Stay away from any units without the H in the name if you live someplace with heavy tree cover. Quote
