robertlipe
Have any eXplorist users had luck with NMEA and Google Earth for realtime tracking? Particularly on a Mac. I just plugged a 600 into my iMac with Earth. Chose NMEA in both the GPS and the RT tab, ticked "follow position" and it Just Worked. (Well, after it got a lock...) Quote Link to comment
+user13371
Works for me, too. Gotta love that 3rd party support! Robert, did you provide Google with the code for doing this? I know gpsbabel does the file import stuff, not sure about NMEA handling. Quote Link to comment
+iamasmith
Google Earth also uses gpsbabel for the real time tracking. Basically it keeps spawning it to generate a kml file and reads the location off that. Quote Link to comment
robertlipe
Yes, Google and I developed this feature together for Earth 4.0. It's a bit of an oddity in GPSBabel and Earth, admittedly. http://www.gpsbabel.org/htmldoc-development/tracking.html iamasmith is pretty close. It spawns GPSBabel once. GPSBabel sits in a loop, blocking on reads from the device, assembling new KML atomically. fork/exec overhead to do it once a second would be bad. Quote Link to comment
