Caches along a route...

Google Earth will only permit a route with a start and end point. No stops in between. Using Google Maps, you can create a route with multiple stops. However, I am not sure how to generate the KML file needed for finding caches. At this site you can generate a KML which will open in Google Earth, but again, I cannot see how to import it to geocaching.com for finding caches.

Am I missing the obvious, or is it just not possible?

I use Google Maps and the GMapToGPX bookmarklet to get a gpx file that I can upload as a route (when I use the "ALL" option in GMapToGPX.)
