Garmin GPSmap 60CSX sw verson 3.90

Recommended Posts

I updated to 3.90 and took the 60CSx on a hike last week. The hike was in a wooded mountain valley. I got the Lost Reception message a couple of times. When I downloaded the track at home I found two track segments with a 1800 ft gap between.

I have not gotten the Lost Reception message before while out hiking and have not seen a gap it tracks like this before. In the past I have seen long straight segments, where I figured it had poor reception and was just connecting the dots.

Of course, this all could have been due to the particular location, but my impression is that with 3.90 it’s more willing to acknowledge poor / lost reception.

Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Nope. I haven't see any difference. Your single experience isn't enough to draw any conclusion. You may simply have been out hiking during a period where there was a poor satellite constellation in the sky.

Just read through this thread, and noticed no one has complained that their 60CSx now takes longer to acquire satellites when turned on, after "upgrading" to 3.90, but it sure seems to take a lot longer for me. Anyone else experience this?

Happened to me. I upgraded to 3.90 and immediately noticed that it took much longer to acquire, especially if I drove a few miles before powering the unit back on. Sometimes it wouldnt lock at all unless I stopped completely. It also seemed the compass pointer was useless once O got within 30 foot of GZ, always pointing wrong direction. I regressed to 3.70 and my fast acquistion returned as well as my accurate pointer

I've always had the problem of the compass pointer being useless within 100+ feet of GZ (or at least recently), but now that you mention it, it does seem to be worse with 3.90. I have to completely ignore the arrow and just determine which direction causes the distance to go down instead of up. Re-calibrating the compass helps, but does not fully solve the problem. Moving versus standing still does not help either.

Possibly because people aren't experiencing that? Sounds like you're looking for things to go wrong, so you're finding them, even if they don't exist.

You might think that, but you'd be wrong. The reason I was searching the forums was because I was experiencing the problem, and was wondering if anyone else was. I have better things to do than imagine problems.

BTW, sorry about the multiple posts. Must have been hitting the refresh button.

I buy this month a 60csx from Germany (I'm French). Unit comes with 3.70/3.00

firmwares. I did yesterday the 3.90/3.00s upgrade.

I noticed issues :

- Lost of 'D'ifferential on satellite status screen

- Cold start takes more time to get a fix (!)

- 'Mass storage' mode turn unit off 50% of times

I noticed improve :

none !

Change History

Changes made from version 3.70 to 3.90:

◦Added support for maps greater than 2 GB.

So what's the limit now? 4GB? 16GB? Anyone know?

FAT file system limits the file size to 4Gb. Cards?, who knows the Garmin support artical still says 2Gb is the max :S

Ouch!, I suppose that you made sure they didn't just add a baud rate setting and have it default to something other than 4800? (unlikely since most equipment that you link to is 4800 baud only).

..and you did report it to Garmin didn't you?

Yes this problem is reported to Garmin,

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to help you with this. What we would suggest is to back grade the software on your unit to recover the NMEA capability. Use the link below and choose the the option GPSMAP60cx 3.70.exe. I have included instructions below.

http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/gps60/

1. It is recommended that you disable screen savers or other programs running on your PC while you go through the update process. Disruptions to the update process may render your GPS inoperable. If the transfer is interrupted, turn off the GPS and then turn it back on. Reboot your PC, go to step #9 and attempt the download again. GARMIN is not responsible for failed downloads of operating software to the GPS and factory resetting the GPS unit will fall under our Flat Rate Repair Policy.

2. Click on "Download" and choose to save the file to your computer.

3. Choose a location where you can easily locate the file by saving it to a location such as the "My Documents" folder or to "C:\".

4. Once the download is complete, go to the location where you saved the file.

5. Locate the downloaded file and double-click on it. This will launch the Win-Zip Self Extractor. This program compresses the data to allow for a faster download of the needed files.

6. A program window will appear asking you where to "Un-zip" the files. This is by default C:\Garmin. You can change this location if you like. Be sure to note where the un-zipped files are going to allow you to find them!

7. Click on the button labeled "Un-zip".

8. Once the un-zip process is complete, click on the "Close" button to exit the Win-Zip Self Extractor.

9. Connect your GPS to your computer using a GARMIN PC Interface cable to an open USB port. Turn the GPS on.

10. If your computer asks for a driver, please see the software and installation instructions that came with your device, or download and install the USB driver from Garmin's website at www.garmin.com.

11. Open the C:\Garmin folder (or other folder where you un-zipped the files), locate the file named 'Updater' and double click on it.

12. You should see the name of your GPS device next to the 'USB Device' option on the Updater program window. Select the 'USB Device' option, then click on 'OK' on the Updater program window to start the data transfer.

Updated my Map60CSx , and it still has a bug from Chipset version 3.0

Every 3rd time I turn on my 60CSx it says "31-Mar-07 8pm".

My 60CSx was a very nice unit back in Sept 07, when I bought it, but at the end of that year, they brought out Chipset version 3.0, and ever since, my GPS will boot up with "31-Mar-07 8pm for the date and time, and I did try hardware resets a few times.

Crazy stuff.

I would try:

1. Master Reset (back up all GPS data first) (Sounds like you may have already tried this to no avail)

2. Let unit sit outside without moving it for 30 minutes with full open view of sky to acquire good algorithm

3. Revert back to an older version of software and an older Chipset version than 3.0. Then reinstall Chipset version 3.0 and software 3.7.

I have recently noticed that I suffer the same effect. My 60cx ddoesn't remember the date and time for more than just minutes.

I'm using 3.90 SW/FW.

With regard to the failed firmware 3.90 installation I contacted Garmin The Netherlands. Today I received an acknowledgement of the problem and they told me a upcoming new firmware release should solve the problem. So you're not alone with the issue, Garmin knows about it and promises to solve it "soon"

I provide the URL of the response http://www.garmin.nl/support/ticket/view/?...1500&s=o90n

New user with 60CSx, when bought my unit some days ago it was already with 3.9/2.00m firmware versions. Running WebUpdate says everything is up to date and no other options (reinstall same, downgrade etc.).

Recorded some strange behavior with routing, any comments welcome

Well I will wait for new version of firmware to. Overall very happy with unit, in outdoors have 2-5 meters accuracy; used to find caches, everything works very well, except routing. I’m seeing D letters when receiving signals from 33 37 and 39 EGNOS satellites.

I had to replace my 60CSx recently, due to it taking a dive into Lake Erie, and the new replacement unit has 3.9/2.00m on it as well. Running webupdate takes it to 4.00 but leaves the GPS SW at 2.00m. Is it necessary to run webupdater twice to get it to upgrade the GPS SW to the latest (3.00s) ?

Thanks!

I know this is an old topic but I was wondering where you can get the old 3.7 version if you need it? Is Post 117 the link and instructions for resorting back to 3.7 ? Also what do I need to do to get a 4GB card to work in my 60CSX ? Thanks.
