Do caches have to have a log book?

OK so I would REALLY like to make a cache that takes advantage of a controlable web cam that focuses on the smallest property in NYC ( 500 sq. inches ). Since virtual and web caches are archived any suggestions on alternatives that DON"T need a log.

Its not doable as a Earthcache because its urban and unscientific. There is a park across the street and I could project a waypoint from there but I was hoping to make the log a online entry with photo documentation, either private or web cam.

:) Bottom line is I don't live in the area but would really like to see this as a cache. If no one has a suggestion anyone in NYC want to partner up on this idea?

Earth caches are the only ones that can be placed without a physical log and mybe CITO's.

All caches with a physical container must have a log within them

From the guidelines:

For all physical caches, there must be a logbook, scroll or other type of log for geocachers to record their visit.

Edit to add:

You could list it as of 'unknown' type and include a ALR (Aditonal Logging Requirement) that would require the finder to post a picture from the web cam to be able to log a find on the cache.

As Hampshire_Hog said, it must have a logbook. If you can find a local cacher to place a cache in the nearby park, it could be made into an ALR (additional logging requirement) cache where the finders must also post a picture of themselves on the webcam in their log.

This sounds like a perfect waymark addition. Have you considered that? Waymarks often require you to post a photo to prove you were at the coordinates.

A waypoint would be so much less than the Geocache I was thinking of.

Guess I'll try and find a NYC cacher who wants to help.

Well, you WILL need to have a cache container, but.... you could make the cache an ALR (additional logging requirement) cache, and list the cache as a "?" cache (the ALR category) and the ALR could be that in addition to signing the logbook, the finder must also submit a foto of themselves from the webcam.

As far as I have been able to find out tthe only types that do not have to have a physical log book at the site are earthcaches, virtuals, and webcams. Thank, I hope this helps and have a great day! gwf :anitongue:

Or it could be a webcam cache just like you describe on an alternative geocaching website. It wouldn't get as many visits as a cache listed on Gecaching.com, but probably many more than if it was listed on Waymarking.com

So what would one of these alternative geocaching sites that allow web cams be? I didn't know there were others out there besides the letter box and waymark sites.

And while I'm here ANY NYC CACHERS interested in helping me out?

I work in NYC and could be able to help you depending on what you are looking to do. PM me and let me know what your idea is.
