Danie, this is interesting to see, but thinking into this, my 1000 came over 179 days, which is the number of days between the first one and the 1000th cache. But of them 179' how many days were actual caching days.

In other words what kind of stats I am looking at are the fastest 1000 caches to number of actual caching days to reach them. Perhaps also looking at the same for 2000, 3000, and 4000 and iPajero-000

I would like to know how many cachers (regardless whether active or not) are registered in SA.

This is often asked, and the simple answer is that it is unfortunately not possible to determine this from the available data. The cachers' origin is not part of the available data (and many do not even list it on their profile.) The best I can do is to answer that 8062 cachers have found at least one South African cache up to now. (This number includes tourists.)

I wonder if Groundspeak could not answer that if requested?

Would one of the reviewers perhaps have contact to a "specialist" at Groundspeak that Danie could approach as our "unofficial" stats-guru?

This stat seems to count the number of characters in the HTML file rather than the actual number of characters in the cache listing. I had a look at the "longest" cache listing - it's only about 11,000 characters long, but there are large chunks of superfluous HTML code that pushes the character count up to over 70,000. Somehow I don't think there is a way to easily count the number of characters in the actual cache text... but hopefully I'm wrong! :)

Edit: I'm probably wrong: how would you even define the character count in Gardens Puzzler 2? Lots of code to make the crossword, which results in a very "short" listing.

In today's age of paperless caching our GPS' seem to have a problems with such long listings. Neither the Montana 650 or the Garmin 550 caters for so many characters. We did an earthcache yesterday and fortunately before we set off checked to see if we could read the questions. Needless to say we had to right them down!

A very common problem.

I think smart phones are a little better. But a solution to EC developers (thanks to Zambesiboy) - write the questions at the top of your EC listijng - then cache foinders do not end with this problem.

I set an intention a while back to find every cache on Table Mountain. That used to be a fairly modest goal. However, now with the publication of AndyT1's matrix challenge caches (5 x 5 and The Full Matrix), both on top of Table Mountain, the goal has expanded from a modest local endeavour to a country-spanning mission...

Not sure if this info is readily accessible via other means (GSAK or something?) but here's the difficulty/terrain matrix for South Africa, late May 2012:

matrixZA.png

(Same info here in HTML, with links to the rare D/T combination caches.)

If you start from scratch, with no finds, from a cache here in Cape Town, and move on to the closest cache with a D/T combo you haven't yet found, and proceed in this fashion, after doing 81 caches and returning home, you'll have travelled more than 3500km.

Similar journeys (finding 81 caches for the sole purpose of completing your matrix):

* starting from Joburg - round trip 4800km.

* from Durban - 4400km.

* from the only D5,T4 cache - 3390km.

Well done to the few who have completed this!

Thanks Danie.

I knew there was a disparity, but a large drop off in caches after the top 20 odd.

So with 51 listed here - and two excluded (Reunion as part of France and Saint Helena as part of UK) only 49 of the 54 official countries represented.

So space for a few more countries to be added.

Also interesting - there are a few caches in the Spanish cities of Melilla and Ceuta that do not show up in this list.

also Maderia and Canary Islands are usually classed as part of Africa too (but belong to Portugal and Spain respectively) - also a single cache WS Cache is actually in Western Sahara, but indicated as Morocco (as are a few in the city of Melilla.

Average log length

Is there any way of determining average log length by SA province? I have a gut feeling that CT cachers write the longest (and best) logs, but don't have a way of measuring this.

Perhaps examine all Found logs over the last (say) twelve months, by Province and get the average length.

I know that this can be skewed by visiting cachers from other countries / provinces, but it will be a good measure of which caches get the longest logs.

It may also be an idea to split this byt D/T of less than 3/3 and D/T of 3.5/3.5 and greater.

Danie / Anton ???

Yup - I have dropped a few .... waiting for publication..... now we have to add some in New Hampshire - a bit sparse in our area..... Watch this space......

Well we don't need much inducement to visit you in your new home - but a few (more) caches will be nice . . .

We enjoyed doing a few of these - THANKS to the Vaalharts/Jan Kempdorp cachers!

Have you ever determined which is the "most isolated" (ito distance) cache in SA?

I have, quite a while back. I'll recalculate and post it later.

The point farthest from any cache in Africa is N13 26.770 E23 47.545, in the west of Sudan, 961.9km from the nearest cache. To put this in perspective - it is the centre of a cacheless circle with an area more than twice the area of South Africa!

Most isolated caches in Africa:

The most isolated cache in Africa is GC1G8QB - 'Jacob's Ladder', the only cache in St. Helena, 1291.3km from its nearest neighbour.

The most isolated cache in the continental Africa that I could find is GC21368 - Jacklinga's "Tom on Tour" in Libya, 720.2 from its nearest neighbour.
