Wow - certainly is a large list.

I reckon we should award each of these guys a special SA 10 year veteran badge to display on their profile page. Anyone keen to develop something like that?

Secondly - what about the 9 year olds - so we can encourage them to keep on caching?

I think it's brilliant that there is such a long list - and we should keep both sides of the Bell curve going (long timers and newbies).

Cacher attrition rate:

The following graph is (yet another) way to look at how long South African cachers actually stay active:

RSA%20Cacher%20Survival%20Rate.jpg

Each point on the graph was calculated as follows: For a specific period, the number of cachers who had actually been active for at least that period was divided by the total number who have started early enough and thus could have been active for at least that period.

It shows very high initial attrition (the 50% point is at 9 days), but thereafter it is actually not too bad. Of those that survive one year, about 50% make it until 8 years.

South African finds during the year 16 May 2014 to 15 May 2015:

During this period a total of 8941 cachers logged at least one find (or attended at least one event).

A total of 163977 finds were logged.

1. Spesbona 1619 finds
2. iPajero 1340 finds
3. Voëlhond 1289 finds
4. AdieA 1253 finds
5. The Huskies 1207 finds

7. ChrisDen 981 finds
7. Team Venter 981 finds
9. Andredj 933 finds
10. Mixs 886 finds

It is not often that somebody beats iPajero!

To get into the top 100 you would have needed 278 finds for the year.

To get into the top 10% you need 30 finds for the year.

To get into the top 1000 you need 26 finds.

According to the logs it has been found once. I would very much like to know how one retrieves and signs a log at that depth!

I have to disagree with you Danie - according to the logs there are 4 DNF's and a heap of Notes written. The DNF's are not attempts to find the cache either but rather "notes" and comments. The CO says that they will be visiting the cache later in 2015 again!

Strange, when I checked this morning, there was one find. (I have it in my database as well). It must have been deleted today. There is still a note that comments on this find (2015-01-10).

Favourite Point distribution:

The following graph shows the FP distribution for active, non-event, South African caches:

This shows that just over half of all the caches have no FPs, 16.8% of all caches have 1 FP, etc.

The average number of FPs per active cache is 2.28

This is good - it means that 50% of caches deserve at least 1 FP, and the 95th percentile is at 10 FPs - so 1 out of 20 caches get more than 10 FPs.

Danie - any chance of doing this for the major provinces please?

OK - nice stats but we also need to remember that only Premium Members can award FP's. What percentage of caches in SA are PM's? Is that figure available perhaps? You can then run the same stat and see what the difference is. Just a thought.

I think you meant CacheRs :)

But, as a matter of interest, there are 193 PMO caches in SA out of a total of 11533 active caches (excluding events and CITOs).

I know of no way to determine who are premium members and who are not. What we do have is the total number of Favourite Points awarded (26086 for the whole of South Africa), as well as the total number of finds (607576). (I only considered active, non-event caches.) That gives us a ratio of 23.3 finds/FP for South Africa. For every 10 finds by a premium member, one FP can be awarded. (I am not sure if that includes attending of events?) All things being equal and looking at this number simplistically would imply that 43% of all cachers must be premium members. I think, however, that the number is much lower than this, mostly because of the last reason in the following list:

Some factors which complicate this:

  • Very old caches may have had many finds before FPs were introduced
  • Premium members may not use all their FPs
  • Statistically, premium members and non-premium members probably behave differently - I would be surprised if many of the very large number of cachers who only find one or two caches before they drop out, are premium members. The other side of this argument is that there are good reasons to believe that the majority of the top finders would be premium members. A relatively small number of cachers are in other words probably responsible for most of the FPs.

Given the above, I would be surprised if more than 10% of South African cachers are premium members.

Thanks Danie - KZN, WC and EC are similar in Finds per FP, but not GP.

Either the GP cachers are "stingier" than cachers in the other provinces.

Or there are more basic members finding caches in GP. Probably the latter.

Or there are more basic members finding caches in GP. Probably the latter.

Or there may simply be fewer FP-worthy caches in Gauteng!

Looking at these numbers, a few interesting facts stand out:

  • The FP distribution in the Western Cape is the most even - it has the fewest caches without FPs and the flattest distribution.
  • The Eastern Cape, on the other hand, has the lowest finds to FP ratio as well as the lowest 95th percentile.
  • Gauteng has the highest percentage caches without FPs (which strengthens my initial remark).

Link to comment

I tend to agree with Danie on why the Gauteng caches have a lower % FP's. The majority of Gauteng is urban and that means smaller caches hidden in an urban environment - ie: magnetic micros abound! I will VERY SELDOM award an FP for a magnetic micro unless it is exceptional. One also needs to look at the huge amount of power trail caches in the province as well. I'm not saying that Gauteng caches are not good - I have found some excellent hides - and rewarded said hides accordingly - but the general urban cache never blows my hair back. The other provinces also have urban caches but they also have vast tracts of land that falls outside the urban environment that allows one to place better caches. :P

Just my 2c worth.

Number of Finds per Favourite Point:

For active, non-event caches in South Africa, the average is 23.3 finds/FP.

The following graph shows the distribution of the Finds to FP ratio for the more popular caches:

RSA%20Finds%20per%20FP%20distribution.jpg

One of the interesting things this graph shows is that 0.3% of all the caches have a ratio of 1, which means that every find got a FP. Easier if they are premium caches, but the surprising fact is that few of them are! Let's look at the top caches:

1. GC5D3BX The Vault D5 T1	14 finds 14 FPs
2. GC4Z4ZE Lichen Symbiosis- Algae D3.5 T3.5	11 finds 11 FPs
  GC4ZFPB The Tortoise and the Hare D2.5 T3	11 finds 11 FPs
4. GC3856X Born in the USA - Di(v)ed in Cape Town D4 T5 7 finds 7 FPs
  GC5A9R9 Duck Hawk D1.5 T3 7 finds 7 FPs
  GC5P9P4 Maze Runner's Revenge: THE CUBE D3 T4 7 finds 7 FPs

Of these 6 caches, only the last two are premium caches. It appears as if the high D/T ratings scared off all the non-premium cachers (or it could simply be coincidence!)

Farthest point from a cache in South Africa:

It is surprisingly difficult to calculate the distance between points on the surface of the earth accurately. The great-circle formula is usually used, but this can be wrong by more than 2km for widely spaced points in South Africa. (GSAK uses this technique.) The reason for these errors is that the earth is not a sphere, but an oblate spheroid. Fortunately there is a way to get to sub-meter accuracy, the Vincenty formula (an iterative formula). Currently the point farthest from a cache in South Africa is at S30 09.065 E20 34.853, which is 161.126km from the nearest three caches. (This formula does not take elevation into account, but because the three equi-distant caches all lie at about the same elevation it does not matter.) The centre of this 81561 square kilometer cacheless circle is right next to the R27, about 36km north of Brandvlei in the Northern Cape.

Interesting stat. I was in a small town in Ethiopia (Bahir Dar) back in November for several days. The closest cache was 202.8km away.

The point farthest from a cache in continental Africa is at N13 24.797 E23 46.867. It is situated in the Darfur region of Sudan. If you stand here, the closest 3 caches are all 961.35km away. This circle covers an area of 2.9 million square kilometers; larger than Algeria, the largest country in Africa. (More than twice the area of South Africa!)

I suppose it is safe to guess that the densest area would be around Pretoria? They have the power trails and quite a lot of other caches as well.

It depends on the size of the area one looks at. To my surprise the densest 1km radius is not in Pretoria, in spite of the power trails and GeoArt.

For the four big provinces the densest 1km radiuses are:

GC2BAAJ	Stainbank Dam Kwazulu Natal	Ethekwini: 41
GC2NQE8	BRICKMAKERSKLOOF BRIDGE Eastern Cape	Nelson Mandela Bay: 36
GC4XV99	Pretoria GeoArt I04 - Kilnerton Memorial Gauteng	City of Tshwane: 34
GC3FXYY	Alphabet Soup Challenge W Cape: A to Z Western Cape	City of Cape Town: 24

The densest 10km radiuses for the four big provinces:

GC4GV88	?7 Gauteng	City of Tshwane: 641
GC5N5V8	Whistle Stop 2 Eastern Cape	Nelson Mandela Bay: 545
GC3AR4P	The way you make me smile Western Cape	City of Cape Town: 519
GC2VC4P	Padfield-Manors Conservancy Kwazulu Natal	Ethekwini: 434
