Thanks for the Stats, very interesting!

Just to make it more confusing/complete, I know of a cache called "Tygerberg cache" GC8B5D, the first log I can see (I cannot see the reviewers note or FTF log) is dated the 15-09-2002 but the top of the page says hidden on the 28-07-2012. Whatever IT bug caused havoc, strictly spoken it should be included in the (Western Cape) list as an old active cache.

From the logs it looks as if this cache was muggled and then got replaced in a new place. I think the reviewer probably regarded this as a new cache. It is just strange that the old name and code remained.

Another one that bothers me is no. 14 on the list, GC2AC1 - JOHANNESBURG SOUTH-1C, originally hidden on 2001/11/15. It was gone for more than a year (but not archived) and then replaced more than 800m from its original location. To me it does not feel like an original "old" cache.

Then there is no. 82, GCGX5X - Serendipity, originally hidden on 2003/09/14. It was gone for more than 3 years, then replaced more than 7 km away, but it still kept the original name and date!

With the news that the world's oldest unfound cache has recently been found (http://blog.geocaching.com/2013/06/worlds-oldest-unfound-geocache-is-found-getting-the-ftf-after-12-years/), I thought it was time to list the oldest unfound South African and African caches.

Us KZN cachers better get up there. But I doubt Mhlwazini peak is still findable.

Find rate over the past year:

During the period 19 June 2012 to 18 June 2013:

Whole of Africa:
318708 finds on 11880 caches by 20387 cachers, for an average of 26.8 finds/cache, 15.6	finds/cacher and 873 finds/day

Africa excluding Madeira and the Canary Islands:
153799 finds on 9752 caches by 10152 cachers, for an average of 15.8 finds/cache, 15.1	finds/cacher and 421 finds/day

South Africa:
133778 finds on 8472 caches by 4854 cachers, for an average of 15.8 finds/cache, 27.6	finds/cacher and 367 finds/day

It is interesting that Madeira and the Canary Islands, with less than 2000 caches between them, have more cachers and finds than the rest of Africa, including South Africa!

The distribution per day of the week for South Africa is:

Su 33171 finds 24.8%
Mo 12783 finds 9.6%
Tu 10783 finds 8.1%
We 14907 finds 11.1%
Th 13091 finds 9.8%
Fr 14273 finds 10.7%
Sa 34770 finds 26.0%

So, if you like to meet other cachers, go caching on a Saturday. Or if you are shy, go on a Tuesday!

Find rate for Madeira and the Canary Islands:

For the year 19 June 2012 to 18 June 2013:

164909 finds on 2128 caches by 10527 cachers, for an average of 77.5 finds/cache (5 times the average for South Africa), 15.7 finds/cacher and 452 finds/day (more than the rest of Africa)

The daily distribution:

Su	27402	16.6%
Mo	21304	12.9%
Tu	22705	13.8%
We	23573	14.3%
Th	22846	13.9%
Fr	21992	13.3%
Sa	25087	15.2%

I strongly suspect the high numbers and even distribution point to large numbers of European tourists to these islands. (They are, after all, administered by Portugal and Spain, respectively.)

Except for SA this clearly aligns with tourism. Something people (C&J...) who might be looking for sponsorships should keep in mind... (not that GC is the main reason why tourists will choose a particular destination).

Danie, soos altyd - baie dankie vir die interessante blik op caching!

I'm really surprised that Kenya is not in the top 10. My 2 Kenyan caches get a good few hits every year.

Kenya is no.13 on the list, with 1366 finds over all time, and 529 finds during the last year.

Interesting. A big gap between #10 and #13. If it is not a big hassle, could you perhaps post the top 20 in Africa?

Agreed. And even the find numbers on SA caches re-iterate this. Table Mountain and Cape Aghulas being top finds every year.

Interesting that November is even lower than February. I wonder why?

Could it possibly be that it's exam time for students, schools and most professionals. I know my caching takes a hit in November?

I want to calculate the centroid of finds in an area, weighted by the number of times each cache has been found in a specified period. In other words, if a specific cache has been found 10 times, its weight should be 10 times that of a cache which has only been found once in the same period. Is there anybody out there that can help me with a SQLite script or GSAK macro to do this?
