Who is the country's best cache hider? Take the number of Favourite points earned in total and decide by caches owned. The best I can find ( by using project gc) is The Pooks with 7.3 FP ave per cache of his 12 caches. Clearly the more caches one owns, the harder it is to maintain a high level of FP so I just looked at those with more than 10 hides. TeamDJ and Hesamati are also right near the top.

And then I found this, AMAZING!!:

naaktslakkies has received 315 favorite points on his/her 23 caches. An average of 13.7 points per cache.

Having done 20 of the naaktslakkies caches, those favourite points are VERY much deserved. The couple's hides are very creative indeed.

An update on the favourite points.

Well done to CapeDoc for being the first to crack the 100 in South Africa.

Great to see a few older caches making the top 50 list (new entries) and also a few more Earthcaches getting up in the rankings. Holiday cachers seem to have made a difference (in Mpumalanga especially).

During 2012, 4732 cachers attempted at least one cache in South Africa, of whom 4462 found at least one cache.

For all time, 11690 cachers attempted at least one cache in South Africa, of whom 10981 found at least one cache.

If one defines an active cacher as one who finds on average one cache per month (12/year), then there were 1430 active cachers in South Africa during 2012.

The top 722 cachers (16% of those that have found at least one cache) found 80% of the total.

The active cachers (those with at least 12 finds for the year) found 91% of the total.

To be in the top 100 in South Africa, one would have needed to find at least 252 caches during 2012.

To be in the top 10, you needed 792 finds.

Thanks Danie.

Interesting stuff as usual.

Is a distribution Graph possible please? I was thinking of something like this ...

Y-axis - # of cachers

X-axis - # of finds [2012 and all time], say in (roughly) logarithmic steps - 1, 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000.

Thanks (for when you are bored) :)

The horizontal axis is the number of finds. (This graph is for the whole of Africa.)

Thanks Danie

Seems to be as I expected. There is a very high 'start-up' number of cachers, but relatively few seem to progress much beyond 50 finds.

We have seen this locally in KZN. Start up, find caches in the immediate vicinity of home/office, then realise that travel is required to progress further. Stop caching, or just find new hides close to home.

I suppose it is much the same in the rest of SA and the world.

But, with the price of fuel being high, this should be expected.

The following graph supports this supposition. It is a histogram of the number of cachers who have found caches in 1, 2, etc. municipalities. I was surprised to find that only slightly more than half of all South African cachers (53%) eventually find a cache in more than one district municipality.

Why are the recent numbers of new ECs so much lower than 3 or 4 years ago? This is contrary to all other caching trends that I can think of. Is it more difficult to get an earthcache published now, or is it simply that the country can only support a very limited number of them and that all the obvious spots have already been taken?

It is a good question Danie.

The earthcache guidelines were changed a few years back and the perception was that ECs are more difficult to get approved (which is partly true - you need to research an Earthcache unlike a poor quality traditional. But the good traditionals also take a fair amount or research ;) ).

Another point (IMO) is that like multi's and puzzles - cahcers generally go for the traditionals rather. There is a perception that Earthcaches are "difficult" and therefore not as many hides (and even finds take a while I believe).

What is pleasing is the number of first time hiders that have come through in the past year.

Grant, I concur.

There is certainly a perception that doing ECs is a PITA. But now that there is an AFR Reviewer may have changed that. :)

I have some spots for more ECs, but doing the research is very time-consuming. Also finding the material on the web is sometimes (make that mostly) difficult, as one does not always know how to structure the search terms to yield a managable number of useful / appropriate results. Also many web resources are locked behind academic logins, and if you don't have 'contacts' it can be difficult.

What could be an idea to generate some enthusiasm is for a list to be put out of publically available EC / Geology related web resources?

My 2c.

I am not too sure what this one means - please details a bit more ...

Is this the total of the FPs from the caches they have found?

Thanks, PT

Yes,

This is a list of who have collected the most favorite points by caching. Your score is a sum of how many favorite points the caches you have logged have received. Favorite points added to caches after you have logged them are also added to your score.

The idea is to have a form of measurement of how much you have experienced within geocaching.
