Well it certainly looks like the Western Cape remains a geocaching stronghold in South Africa - here is another stat in their favour.

Of the top 25 "favourite" caches in South Africa

Western Cape = 16

Gauteng = 5

Free State = 3

KwaZulu Natal = 1

Rest of SA = 0

As they say "stats and lies" as there are some brilliant caches out there in the lesser travelled parts of the country like Northern Cape and Mpumalnaga- they probably just don't have 50 - 80 odd finds.

Perhaps a GSAK guru can do a %age of favourites on some of these caches?

For what it is worth, Wikipedia regards Madeira, Reunion, St. Helena and the Canary Islands (as well as a number of Spanish enclaves in Morocco) as part of Africa (geographically) although they are administered by European countries.

For those who haven't seen this before... Check out Project-GC. Got some very cool functionality incl. some of the stats that are posted here. Although, it looks like their SA database is a little out of date.

Very interesting link - I wish I could get access via the API!

Unfortunately their data for South Africa is very unreliable - for some days they have no logs at all.

I know this can be done via GSAK, but it is a bit long winded.

For the SQLite query writers - is there an easn way of generating a table of the number of active cache types by Province / Municipal District?

e.g. Province - District: # Traditional, # Multi, # Unknown, # Earthcache ....etc ...

Mega Event Statistics 1

I realize that the logs for the Mega event (and related events and caches) are probably not all in yet, so the following set of statistics are provisional. I'll update them in a week or two.

Biggest events in South Africa:

1. GC3B0EJ MEGA South Africa 2012, Pretoria, 2012-10-05: 165 attended
2. GC3X0R6 MEGA SA 2012 - Meet & Greet, Pretoria, 2012-10-05: 80 attended
3. GC3X0RE 9Icon Walk – Station to Square CITO Event, Pretoria, 2012-10-06: 78 attended
4. GC3X64W 9Icon Walk - Flash Oom Paul Flash Mob, Pretoria, 2012-10-06: 75 attended
5. GC3X0QG MEGA SA 2012 - Mega TB Race 2013 Launch, Pretoria, 2012-10-06: 64 attended
6. GC2JKAX 10 YEARS OF GEOCACHING IN SOUTH AFRICA, Cape Town, 2011-01-08: 52 attended
7. GC16R15 The Neighbour of Leap Years Day Bash, Pretoria, 2008-03-01: 40 attended
8. GC1Y2J3 10-10-10 @ 10:10:10, Pretoria, 2010-10-10: 39 attended
9. GC3X0NK MEGA SA 2012 - CITO Picnic Area, Pretoria, 2012-10-07: 38 attended
10. GC2418W 10 Years! Centurion, South Africa, Pretoria, 2010-05-02: 35 attended

Note: The number of 165 for the Mega event is the number of Attended logs at this moment - it gives no indication of the total number of people at the event. (I know it to be more than 500.)

Mega Event Statistics 2

Most and least found Mega caches:

If one defines the Mega caches to be the caches on the monument terrain, as well as the 9Icon caches and a few off-terrain Mega 2012 caches, the ones found most during the duration of the event were:

1. GC3B0EJ MEGA South Africa 2012: 160 attended
2. GC3WPYX 9Icon Walk – Sterculia murex: 115 finds
3. GC3XCM1 9Icon Walk – Starting with a Puzzle: 112 finds
4. GC3X91A MEGA SA 2012 – Keep me Posted: 105 finds
5. GC3WXG3 9Icon Walk - Voortrekker Monument Postal Tree: 102 finds

And the least found ones (during the event):

38. GC3WHVE MEGA SA 2012 - CITO Luton Valley: 18 attended
39. GC3XEJW MEGA SA 2012 - A Loop: 14 finds
40. GC3X66N Mega SA 2012 - Fountains View: 9 finds
41. GC3WHV0 Setting Up for MEGA SA 2012: 3 attended
42. GC3JPCR MEGA SA 2012 - Night Song: 2 finds

Mega Event Statistics 3

Total number of cachers:

The total number of cachers who have logged at least one find on any of the Mega caches during the duration of the event is 175 (10 more than have logged the Mega event itself).

These 175 cachers have logged a total of 2377 finds during the event, for an average of 13 Mega cache finds/cacher. (Excluding any other finds in the vicinity.)

Mega Event Statistics 4

Effect of the Mega event on the vicinity:

During the week of the Mega event, 4315 caches were found in Pretoria by 199 cachers.

The average for this time of the year is 170 caches found in Pretoria by 38 cachers.

This implies 25 times more finds by 5 times the average number of cachers.

For the whole of Gauteng the numbers are:

For the week of the Mega event: 5233 finds by 239 cachers.

Average for this time of the year: 480 finds by 101 cachers.

This implies 11 times more finds by 2.4 times the average number of cachers

This hints that a fairly big proportion of the attendees were from outside Gauteng.

(Unfortunately the data does not contain the cachers' origins.)

Number of cachers active in South Africa:

During the year ending 7 October 2012, 4068 cachers have logged at least one find in South Africa.

For the previous year the number was 3209.

During the year ending 7 October 2012, 2574 cachers have logged their first find in South Africa. This means 7 new cachers/day.

Hi Danie

Any chance of getting an update on the top 81 Difficulty / Terrain stats? Possibly for the top 20 as you did before?

Apart from those that have recently completed the matrix I know that some others have made significant progress on their travels to the MEGA.

The latest Favourite Cache list for SA

A second cache cracks the 50 point mark today - well done to Hesamati for joining CapeDoc. Also a good few of the MEGA event caches shooting into the top list - especially interesting is the Wherigo in position 21 - does this mean more Wherigo caches in the country? I hope so - they are fun. Only one disabled (Snail Mail in KZN - while the previous disabled in now back up and running).

Hi Danie

What select statement are you using for that?

My latest stats tell me this - one of us must be wrong :) Stats dated 17 November.

My latest stats tell me this - one of us must be wrong :) Stats dated 17 November.

You have found 1790 caches in Africa from 3 Apr 2010 to 17 Nov 2012, for an average of 1.86 finds/day. This puts you in the 16th place.

It is unfortunately not practical to calculate this for all (worldwide) finds, because this would mean that I need to have access to all the find logs - not possible with only 5 PQs per day.

Thanks Danie - OK, now that I know it is African finds only, you are probably correct :)

Who are the Top 20 Cachers in SA, in total finds and on Total SA Finds?

Is there a way to see which cache that has been archived for the longest and then found after archiving.

You can also look here: http://project-gc.com/TopLists/top/?profile_name=&profile_country=&country=South+Africa&region=&county=&fromyyyy=&frommm=&fromdd=&toyyyy=&tomm=&todd=&submit=Filter&submitbutton=Filter

Very nice indeed, even if it is a little outdated. I managed to find a stat where I can give iPajero a run for his money! :P

Notice how visible the GPS Series effect is in this graph. The series was published on 22 July 2011. Only MEGA Day can compete on any level.
