My take on Karma is that it is a strange animal that may even need a bit of rethinking in line with the recent GS changes.

 

Let's examine a few scenarios:-

 

A new keen cacher gets going and starts to clean out his neighbourhood and all other nearest places, so he is finding lots of caches, but only placing a few. This calculates a low karma.

 

Then, as he gradually runs out of caches in his home area, his find rate drops dramatically, while other cachers are still finding his hides. Now his karma starts going up.

 

Next, he has a trip to London, where he finds 500 caches during his three-week vacation (or he could go to the US and do the ET Power trail and find 500 caches in two days). Karma plummets again.

 

Nothing in the above is indication of how he is contributing to the game.

 

 

Also consider the cacher who places a number of high quality, high difficulty puzzle caches - these will attract very few finds (virtually none by visitors), so his Karma will never get to the magic figure of 1.0. But that is not because he is putting nothing back into the game - He is in fact contributing to bettering the quality of caches in his area.

 

 

Of course there is the other side of the same coin - someone goes and drops a bundle of film canisters / pill boxes all over town, each with only a piece of paper stuck inside it, and none that require more than one brain cell to find in less than 30 seconds. These are fodder to the number chasers and he scores lots of finds, so his Karma rockets.

 

Now, by the current definition, this high Karma cacher is better than his mate above who has 1/5 the number of caches, but 10x the cache quality.

 

IMHO, we should be measuring karma (or something akin to karma, call it what you like - maybe Cache Magic?) by looking at the Favourite points gained by a cache, and expressing that number as a percentage of total hides. e.g. 20 favourite points over 40 caches placed = 0.5; and 40 favourite points over 30 caches placed = 1.33. This would be a better measure of what someone is putting back into the sport.

 

There are some problems with this suggestion as well - e.g. only Premium members can allocate favourite points, and those with fewer caches may have some built-in distortion. So maybe number of finds needs to come in as a moderating factor, also the number of placements.

 

Is this something worth thrashing around for a while?

No, I am afraid the scale of my last graph is a bit misleading. I have normalized it to the number of cache hiders who have found at least 50 caches. Not only does this filter out those cachers with finds < 50, it also ignores the very large number of cachers who have not hidden any caches. The actual number of cachers whose karma > 1 is about 10% of the total.

 

To put it another way, 1% of all the cachers who have logged at least one find in South Africa, have received 50% of all finds on their own caches. 2.5% of cachers have received 75% of all the find logs. And 5.2% of all cachers have received 90% of all the find logs. So only a very few are really putting anything back into the game.

Logs and Finds per day:

For the past year the average number of finds per day in South Africa has been 196.

The average number of logs per day is 240.

 

The average number of finds per cacher is 25 for the last year.

The average number of logs per cacher is 31 for the last year.

 

The average number of finds over all time is 27.6 per cache.

The average number of logs over all time is 36.1 per cache.

 

A surprising 7% (206) of all cachers who have logged something during the year, have not found a single cache. One interpretation of this number can be that newbies require more assistance than we are currently providing.

Ag I just want to say, this is an incredible forum and the work that Danie does is under-valued.... It makes for incredible reading and I really don't know where he finds the time to manage all this stats. Fastest cachers over time:

To generate the following two graphs, I determined the fastest 5 cachers over the previous year at 2-monthly intervals. It almost appears as if the overwhelmingly dominant no. 1 cacher during 2009 had a negative effect on the rest, who contrary to the growing trend, had fewer finds during the same period. If MadSons can keep it up, he will soon pose major competition to iPajero.

Traverse reverse is a cache in Cape Town less than 5km from the center of the CBD. It was published in 2007,has a terrain rating of 4&1/2 stars, has never gone missing, and has only 8 finds. Are there similar, "urban" caches out there that are hardly found despite being so close to the CBD? I suppose some puzzle caches must have similar stats?

Traverse reverse is a cache in Cape Town less than 5km from the center of the CBD. It was published in 2007,has a terrain rating of 4&1/2 stars, has never gone missing, and has only 8 finds. Are there similar, "urban" caches out there that are hardly found despite being so close to the CBD? I suppose some puzzle caches must have similar stats?

 

Yes my closest un-found cache and one that has been so close but yet so far almost every week since I started Geocaching, Platberg just outside Harismith. I think as the crow flies it is 3.5km from the CBD. It has 5 finds on it since been placed almost 6 years ago.

Danie - Here is an interesting question for you. I have found pretty much every cache in Rustenburg - I think the municipal name in Bojanani (sp??) - the rest of them are mine! How would you work the macro to count both the hides AND finds? That might be interesting reading for places like East London where iPajero and iNokia have high percentages of hides as well. Nelspruit comes to mind for cachers like Fish Eagle and GPS Storm perhaps. Newcastle would be another one for wazat. Has the challenge been accepted? :unsure:

Hi Danie,

Most SA cachers uses the StatsGen and BadgeGen macros from GSAK to reflect their statistics and badges in their own profile. One of the badges that you obtain is for caching in all 9 provinces in the country. Although this a badge, I think it is not a great reflection of who has cached all over SA. I read a recent post by IPajero where they said that they found a cache somewhere in the Northern Cape giving them now a cache in each one of the municipalities. I thought this was a great achievement and one I would greatly try to achieve also.

Would it be possible to give some statistic on Cachers compared to the number of municipalities in SA. This I think should rather be a badge than the number of provinces....:D

OK, so perhaps I am taking a purist view here ...

 

To find out a geocacher's percentage finds in a given area, you need to look at when the cacher started (Jors is a bad example since he has been around since the rinderpest), then take the number of active geocaches at that time, add all caches placed since then, subtract the cacher's hides - this will give a max possible finds, then express his finds in that area as a percentage of the max possible.

 

I suspect (but I may be very wrong) that the percentages above are total finds vs current active cache total.

 

And no, I would not like to write that query :)

I suspect (but I may be very wrong) that the percentages above are total finds vs current active cache total.

No, the percentages are total finds divided by the total number of caches up to last Thursday, including archived caches. Jors has found more Pretoria caches than are currently active.

To find out a geocacher's percentage finds in a given area, you need to look at when the cacher started (Jors is a bad example since he has been around since the rinderpest), then take the number of active geocaches at that time, add all caches placed since then, subtract the cacher's hides - this will give a max possible finds, then express his finds in that area as a percentage of the max possible.

It would be difficult to get the number of active caches at a certain time in the past, since the caches did not have "published" and "archive" logs back then.

This makes sense, but it is extremely difficult to determine the number of active caches at any specific date in the past. The reason is that not all archived caches have archive dates. To complicate matters, one often finds logs after a cache has been archived.

Would it be possible to give some statistic on Cachers compared to the number of municipalities in SA. This I think should rather be a badge than the number of provinces.

Danie - Here is an interesting question for you. I have found pretty much every cache in Rustenburg - I think the municipal name in Bojanani (sp??) - the rest of them are mine! How would you work the macro to count both the hides AND finds? That might be interesting reading for places like East London where iPajero and iNokia have high percentages of hides as well. Nelspruit comes to mind for cachers like Fish Eagle and GPS Storm perhaps. Newcastle would be another one for wazat. Has the challenge been accepted? :unsure:

 

Haa haa... I have found every cache in Newcastle, Ladysmith and Pietermaritburg. The three largest cities in KZN aside from Durban.... Does that skew the statistics a bit. And in two weeks I might add Bloemfontein to that list.... mmm. Even a look at GP shows a lot of smilies for me... :lol::rolleyes::ph34r:

Who has found the most caches per province? I can expect iPajero has put many a cacher in their home province to shame, but it would be interesting to see which cacher from their own province is most prolific.

 

Can you also work out which cacher has the most finds in the smallest area.... ie: finding 200 caches in a 30km circle.
