Some of the following caches may not be active any more - it is hard to keep up to date with archived (and newly published) caches. I have my doubts about the actual age of the first cache on the list - its code does not correspond with its placed date. The oldest surviving South African cache (bottom of the list) comes in at number 176. 74 of the oldest 100 surviving caches are in the USA.

Rank Code Name Country Placed Date

1 GC1HTTN Daylight Saving Time Machine United States 2000-05-03

63 GCKXM5 HAJ 4: zero-nine-left Germany 2000-10-24

64 GCKXM6 HAJ 2: two-seven-left Germany 2000-10-24

65 GCKXM8 HAJ 3: two-seven-right Germany 2000-10-24

93 GCM65A Liegenbleiber Germany 2000-11-27

98 GCM729 LINDEN GUERILLA II - Kommando Eduard Hoffmann Germany 2000-12-04

There are a number of caches which looks dodgy on the above list, and I'm pretty sure some of those that remain are not in the correct order. I don't think one can really trust the "placed date", since it's editable by the user, and you can select any date you wish, or it could be wrong by accident (e.g. for my own PopCo I reused an old cache page I created but never published, and forgot to alter the placed date - it was wrong for several weeks before I fixed it). Is there a way to compile a similar list by "Published date"?

With Antron's recent entry into the 1000+ club I was curious to see who of them did it in the shortest time:

iPajero: 601 days

Antron: 609 days

CrystalFairy: 673 days

gerhardoosMPsa: 726 days

RedGlobe: 857 days

Fish Eagle: 988 days

cache-fan: 1351 days

cownchicken: 1455 days

The Huskies: 1649 days

Noddy: 1695 days

battlerat & pussycat: 1703 days

Tricky Vicky & Mickey: 1951 days

GlobalRat: 2200 days

(The above list is based on African cache finds only, and it is calculated from find no. 1 to find no. 1000)

If one looks at every 1000+ cacher's fastest 1000 ever:

iPajero: 197 days (!)

CrystalFairy: 556 days

Antron: 609 days

gerhardoosMPsa: 632 days

Tricky Vicky & Mickey: 661 days

RedGlobe: 781 days

cache-fan: 828 days

Fish Eagle: 883 days

cownchicken: 979 days

Noddy: 1346 days

battlerat and pussycat: 1387 days

GlobalRat: 1501 days

The Huskies: 1649 days

Whohoo!! 584 days - DrDM & Raider :o

The only way to know when a cache was published, is by the date of the published log, however, that type of log only came into use much later than the first caches.

What I'm trying to say that most (or all) of the old caches does not have a published log, and thus is of no help.

I am concentrating on my "new and improved" version of a geocoin tracking program. I have not updated my GSAK database for about 2 months now.

But I still have downloaded every set of PQ every 2nd day. So will catch up at some point again.

If Danie can't answer any questions, Ill gladly have a look at it.

I do however read the forums from time to time.

Paddawan just had 33 caches published simultaneously and presently has a 633:119 finds to placement ratio. Is this some sort a record? Obviously cachers with a low number of finds could probably top this, but say for anyone with over 300 finds?

You're about right. I realised too late that my new cache notification is set at 50km radius. Paddawan responded in the Fynbos Finders thread and said it's 90 with two to come. Now I'm even more gobsmacked! :(

I have a finds to placement ratio of 671:182 [3.68] but that is attributed to not having caches to find around here. 80% of my finds are found in other countries when I am on holiday. When I arrived here there were only 8 caches in the country so I set about hiding caches - we now have over 200 of which I have found all of those that are not mine!

Well done Paddawan - a great achievement in an area where there are also 100's to find. I look forward to finding some of yours when I am next in the Western Cape.

The two messages refer to two different periods - the first one was for the year September 2009 to August 2010, and the second one for January 2010 to December 2010. Remember, the numbers only show NEW caches published in that period, not the total number over all time. So it is quite possible for some provinces to show a drop, even without taking the archiving of caches into account.

Unfortunately I can not give you the breakdown of the archived caches; I only have the total and I can not think of an easy way to do it.

I was explaining geocaching to a friend the other day and he asked me how many active geocachers there were in SA and what the breakdown per province is. I've no idea how one defines a cacher as "active". Maybe someone who has logged a find or placed a cache in the last three months? Is it possible to get such statistics?

Link to comment

Danie, maybe I can help with the question on the archived caches. Unfortunately GSAK is at home and I am work. I do keep a list of the archived caches in a separate database.

I have a database called Default for any caches not found by me which is updated every Friday. If a cache is not updated during this period I then run a check on the status of the specific cache. Normally it returns as an archived cache. I then move them to the archived cache database.

If no one else responded then I will run a query on this archived database per province for year 2010.
