With Antron's recent entry into the 1000+ club I was curious to see who of them did it in the shortest time:

iPajero: 601 days

Antron: 609 days

CrystalFairy: 673 days

gerhardoosMPsa: 726 days

RedGlobe: 857 days

Fish Eagle: 988 days

cache-fan: 1351 days

cownchicken: 1455 days

The Huskies: 1649 days

Noddy: 1695 days

battlerat & pussycat: 1703 days

Tricky Vicky & Mickey: 1951 days

GlobalRat: 2200 days

(The above list is based on African cache finds only, and it is calculated from find no. 1 to find no. 1000)

If one looks at every 1000+ cacher's fastest 1000 ever:

iPajero: 197 days (!)

CrystalFairy: 556 days

Antron: 609 days

gerhardoosMPsa: 632 days

Tricky Vicky & Mickey: 661 days

RedGlobe: 781 days

Shoe 50 finds in 2003 for TV&M.

How many caches were available at the time?

We did a road trip at the time (2005)

- Western Cape, Free State, KZN and Eastern Cape. Did All the caches we could find and only got 40!!

A year later did another trip - Western Cape, Free State, Mpumalanga, KZN and Eastern Cape - this time 200.

How things have changed!

And I suppose now you'd be able to get a 1000? Be interesting for you do do a "cache along the route" and see how many are available as ofd today.

I noticed a very welcome change this morning - the maximum size of a PQ has been increased to 1000 caches.

Great news!

These dates will cover the whole of S.A. in five PQ's:

Placed by date PQ Generation

01 2001/01/18 2007/02/02 994

02 2007/02/03 2008/04/26 995

04 2009/06/02 2010/03/26 995

Brilliant.... can do each province as a download then... but will probably still stick to date ranges... I will run the queries and see what is the best for max between days ... unless someone has beaten me to it...

Interesting, but how many of those are active cachers? Perhaps those with 100+ finds would be better. Often a newbie will hide a lot due to the novelty and then suddenly stop caching again. Not sure which will be a good way of measuring the stats though. :anibad:

While I was changing my PQ this morning, I see that there is a new tab next to "Active Pocket Queries" which is calles "Pocket Queries Ready for download".

So it seems we can now also download the PQ directly from the web site.

Way to go Groundspeak!!

Maybe something that someone can use. I use the following pocket queries settings for updating of GSAK. I run this on a Thursday so I am ready to rock during the weekends with the newest information. This is applicable to me - only for the default database; the ones that I still need to find. Maybe you will have to do some adjustments. Caches found by me is a seperate database with a different query.

Maximum caches: 1000 caches.

1. 18 Jan 00 – 23 Sep 07

2. 24 Sep 07 – 12 May 09

3. 13 May 09 – 1 May 10

4. 02 May 10 – 31 Dec 11

Oh gata-patat!

Daar is 'n konkel in die kabel.

It seems if you create a PQ larger than 500 caches, the PQ must be downloaded from the GC web site.

Hope to see a grease-monkey script soon to download it automatically, once a week.

Anton,

Don't know if it would be of any help, but I came accross this post in the Gsak forum.

I was thinking the same except then I remembered I had 1 Virtual find and that is in Swaziland... So not counted in this list. Else I too would be on 7.

According to my data (which should be complete up to last Thursday) you have 1 Virtual, lots of Mystery and Traditional caches, 14 Earth caches, some multi's and 13 Events. That makes 6 types?

And some Waymarks.... that is 7 types then. I thing a CITO would be in order in nearly every municipality over SA.... after these municipal strikes... Then I could add that too... Still gotta find a letterbox too... I was close but ran out of time... so 9 types are quite possible... where are my closest webcam caches? mmm

OK Breakdown of last Sunday.....

I found:

1: Letterbox cache...

2: Multi

3: Puzzle

4: 10 Years! Event Cache

5: Wherigo

6: Traditional

7: Earth cache

That is 7 Types.... in one day.

To top it off I Achieved 700 finds with the event, 1st Letterbox, first Wherigo, 50th Puzzle, 50th Multi and 15th Earth Cache. I missed out a FTF the night before by about 2 minutes and another in the morning otherwise i would have been sitting on 100 FTF's too...

Right who has stats like that? :)

Which Sa cacher has the most forum posts?

(I noticed CH has had a thing or 2000 to say...)

Difficult to measure if you want numbers on SA Forum only. The count is on ALL forums. CH and I contribute a lot on EarthCaches and Middle East Forums as well which would skew the figures somewhat. Oh, and BTW Doc, neither of us are true SA cachers as we are ex-pats at the moment! :)

And the SA ones mainly being in W Cape!

Any idea of the most active caches in each province?

OK - can someone do a trend on number of caches found per month over the past few years.

I'd be interested to see how the past month looked vs previous months in SA caching.

What I'm really interested to see is if tjhere was a noticable "bump" due to more cachers being in the country over the Soccer World cup.

13 caches archived in the last week.

4 Events, and

9 Others.

Most notably those from besem in the magalies.

(Sorry to see them go, before I got to find them)

It was a tough decision to let them go, but it had to be done, I'm afraid. I'll be keeping an eye on the situation, and if my two remaining caches up there stay intact for a year or so, I'll consider reinstating the series. In the meantime it opens up the mountain for other cachers who'll perhaps be more fortunate than I was! :D

Does anyone know if there is a list of the oldest surviving caches (say top 100) in the world?

And I wonder where the SA caches lay in the world ranking of age?

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Some of the following caches may not be active any more - it is hard to keep up to date with archived (and newly published) caches. I have my doubts about the actual age of the first cache on the list - its code does not correspond with its placed date. The oldest surviving South African cache (bottom of the list) comes in at number 176. 74 of the oldest 100 surviving caches are in the USA.
