Wow! Thanks for that! What a contrast between Northern and Western Cape! After caching for 3 years my Total finds = number of new caches place in one year in one provence! Nice to know that caching in this country looks to be ....infinite for me!

What is the most popular cache size in South Africa?

If one looks at the numbers of each size placed during the past year, Small (45%) is by far the most popular. It is followed by Micro (29%) and Regular (14%).

Looking at the find statistics (average number of finds in the past year), one sees a totally different picture:

Virtual: 18

Other: 14

Large: 12.2

Micro: 11

Not chosen : 10.2

Small: 9

Regular: 8.5

So, contrary to what most people believe, micros are found more frequently than regulars. (I suspect it does not necessarily mean that they are more popular, but that it is because they are predominantly placed in the cities.)

Are there any caches in South Africa that are below sea level??

As far as I know the whole of South Africa lies above sea level. So unless there is a cache in a deep mine or in the ocean, the answer is no. The lowest one I know of is Postcard on the Rocks, which must be about 2m above sea level. (I suspect it gets submerged during spring tides.)

Are there any caches in South Africa that are below sea level??

I am pretty certain that an EarthCache could be placed at 0m or even below zero as it does not need a physical cache. Maybe some of the EC owners could verify their locations. I have 1 that is below sea level and another that is in the tidal zone here in Qatar.

Would it be possible to give an indication of how many non-South African [tourists] cachers log finds on a monthly basis? It would be interesting to see where they are logging caches and during which months.

This has been asked before - there is unfortunately no way to easily distinguish between local cachers and tourists. The origin of a cacher only appears on his profile page, and it is not even mandatory to have it there. One could maybe look where a cacher normally caches, and where he places caches, but this will be very difficult to do programmatically and it will not always work.

How many finds per cache before it requires maintenance/is muggled

TCNZ's

There are 111 finds (and attendeds) for every Needs Maintenance log.

There are 33 finds for every Archive log (temporary and permanent).

These numbers can however be misleading - maintenance is highly dependent on where the cache is located. Where owners pro-actively maintain their caches the number of maintenance and archive logs drop significantly. Many caches end up being archived simply because the owners have lost interest and neglected their caches.

We need to sympathise with our reviewer. That is a lot of work for a volunteer - and that is just one day!

...why do you think he has resigned...! ;)

All the caches were pre-reviewed - a couple of small issues and 2 major ones (Crater Top) which were expected and debated and lots of advice given. Andy is just an amazing reviewer and I think Rodney will have it 'easier' to get going as he has direct access to Andy's vast experience. Fortunately the reviewer tools are also improving to assist with bulk reviewing (as I've heard via the grapevine) :)

But yes, a major job by Fish Eagle - and overall we only see the ones that get approved! ;) I don't know why anyone would do that job except as a selfless act of duty - so they have all my support and empathy. Maybe they should line up a couple of reviewers (volunteers, anyone?) and alternate every term or so...

...why do you think he has resigned...! :D

Not at all...!!!

It was fun reviewing the MF2010 caches - they were submitted 15-20 a day for pre-review which spread the workload. There were also minimal issues, so the reviewing was easy. I can see that they aren't inane caches, and they're on our to-do list for the near future. :)

About 3 years ago, we only had 12 caches left to find in the greater Pretoria area, now there are over 250!!

Like being a kid in candy store. :P

what are the nine types?

Mystery

EarthCache

Letterbox Hybrid

Waymark

I don't think webcam & waymarks where used. Think CITO & Wherigo where used instead.

I was thinking the same except then I remembered I had 1 Virtual find and that is in Swaziland... So not counted in this list. Else I too would be on 7.

Why don't waymarks come as pocket queries... that would make them more appealing....

Speaking of Waymarks what stats are there for Waymarks in SA. Who has the most finds and most Waymarks?

According to my data (which should be complete up to last Thursday) you have 1 Virtual, lots of Mystery and Traditional caches, 14 Earth caches, some multi's and 13 Events. That makes 6 types?

A few historical statistics:

The first cache placed in Africa was GC53 - Rift Valley, a virtual cache placed on 15 June 2000 in central Kenya by Hans-Georg Michna, a German bush pilot working in east Africa. It has been found only 5 times during its existence of almost 10 years - the last time in Sep. 2006.

The first cache found in Africa was GC163 - GCZA01, by our own Jors, on 17 January 2001. This cache was placed not far from the Hartbeespoort Dam in North West by GPSFrodo, an IT consultant from Pretoria, 3 day earlier. (The rush for FTF's was obviously slower in those days.) The cache only survived the one find before it was muggled (or "raided" as it was called in those days!) The dubious honour of writing the first DNF log in Africa on 28 January 2001 belongs to imre, on this same cache. GPSFrodo last cached in 2006, but is still a member. If somebody (Jors?) knows him, it would be very interesting to try to get him to attend one of the 10 year events.

The oldest surviving cache in South Africa is GC185 - Sentinel View, placed on 18 January 2001 by npl, a.k.a. cmerry, a.k.a. Prof Charles Merry. It has been found 78 times. The second find in Africa was made at this cache on 3 February 2001, by netic. The third find was also here, by child. (Neither are still active.)

The first cache placed in Gauteng was GCE6D - Gold 1 (Jhb - Sterkfontein Area), placed on 30 June 2001 by Jakrsa. The cache was archived in 2006.

The oldest surviving cache in Gauteng is GC13FB - Pretoria-East 001:, placed on 29 July 2001 by Pedro. It has been found 140 times.

And some Waymarks.... that is 7 types then. I thing a CITO would be in order in nearly every municipality over SA.... after these municipal strikes... Then I could add that too... Still gotta find a letterbox too... I was close but ran out of time... so 9 types are quite possible... where are my closest webcam caches? mmm

Shoe 50 finds in 2003 for TV&M.

How many caches were available at the time?

I do not know how to determine the number of available caches at a date in the past with a script. (The fact that a cache can be reactivated after having been archived complicates matters.) A quick manual count gave me a number of about 170 available South African caches on 26 Aug 03. (At that time close to half of them were in the Western Cape, with about 50 in Cape Town.)
