Oh Guru's of the caches

What are the 10 most least most visited caches in SA?

and for a bonus 10

What are the 10 most visited caches in SA

This one is difficult to answer, as a new cache might have only 2 finds being 2 days old.

Another cache might have existed for 4 years with only two finds.

So somehow one would need to add a "time" component into the equation.

What are the 10 most visited caches in SA

See my posting of 4 January for the 10 most found caches in South Africa.

What do you mean with the most least most visited caches?

There are currently 27 caches with no finds, of which the oldest ones are:

1. Twins Peak 2007-04-29

2. MITRE 2007-04-29

3. Radical pools 2007-12-10

4. Towercache 2007-12-20

5. Boegoeberg Rocks 2008-03-22

6. Springbokpan 2009-06-03

7. Venda View 2009-07-04

8. Nkandla View 2009-07-05

9. Stonehenge Karoo 2009-09-03

10. Gideon Scheepers 2009-10-30

(Orange River - Terraces is older than all of these and has no logs, but I have been informed that it has been found.)

Is it not feasable to "resurrect" these old caches? Or is that contrary to the spirit or guideliens of GC.com?

As far as I know Jors wanted to resurrect GCZA01, but there was a problem getting permission. He then planted GCZA01.2 about 50m away, which was as close as he could get to the original cache location.

Hello Danie... do you by any chance know what is the oldest cache in Gauteng?

Thank you for the other information!!

To see all caches in you province in date order go to your "my profile" page and down the right hand side click on "advanced search", search by "state/country", fill in the country and then province and all the caches will be shown in date order from newest to oldest. Hit >> to get to the last page and you will see the oldest active caches.

What was the most caches that was found on one day in SA?

I saw on an American review that the most in the world is 431 caches on one day!

The most South African caches logged by a cacher on one day:

1. Urban Hunters: 50 on 14 Jun 09

2. Discombob: 48 on 31 Oct 06

3. GlobalRat: 44 on 27 Jul 07

4. warthog: 42 on 27 Jul 07

5. GlobalRat: 40 on 24 Mar 08

This is not to say that all of them have found all of the caches on one day - I remember that when this question was last asked somebody replied that he logged his whole vacation on one day.

The 4000th person to find a cache in South Africa did so on 3 January 2010.

Up to 20 January, 4056 cachers have found at least one South African cache, and 4375 have written at least one log.

The average number of finds per cacher is 30.9, and the average number of logs per cacher is 37.9.

If one defines an active cacher as a person who has found at least 12 caches in the last year (1 per month), then there are currently 625 active cachers in South Africa.

Is there any way to determine the number of underwater (scuba) caches in SA?

PQs now have the option to search on cache attributes. There are 3 scuba caches in South Africa: D®ive the Bus, A Scuba Miracle and Bass Lake. There are a further 13 that require swimming.

..of which 'A Scuba Miracle' is the only actually 'hidden under water' cache.. :P

...and for 'D®ive the Bus' one has to do a wreck dive to gather clues to the final coordinates of the cache.

Both these need some simple maintenance, although they are still there according to latest non-geo info. Owners to visit dive locatin in Feb/March.

There have been 42633 cache finds in South Africa in the past year, for an average of 10.8 finds/active cache.

There have been 12329 cache finds in Gauteng in the past year, for an average of 15.5 finds/active cache.

There have been 12939 cache finds in the Western Cape in the past year, for an average of 13.8 finds/active cache.

If one looks at specific metropolitan areas:

Cape Town: 8683 finds, or 18.1 finds/active cache

Johannesburg: 4261 finds, or 14.9 finds/active cache

Pretoria: 4804 finds, or 19.9 finds/active cache

The total number of active caches in South Africa grew from 3245 to 3948 (an increase of 703).

Gauteng seems to have stagnated, or maybe it is saturated, because the number of active caches has only grown by 53 during the past year. It has actually decreased over the last 5 months!

Now that the addlogs macro does not work for updating the logs on caches in the GSAK database, does anyone know of a way to add logs, to a cache record in GSAK, manually?

Thanks for the help.

Boris

How does the add log macro not work?

If you run it on a cache that you do not own it comes up with a 'macro cancelled message' - something about changes on the GC.com site earlier this year.

Link to comment

Hi Boris

I did have a look at your profile and i see you have not updated your macros lately. That you can see when you look at the provincial map of South Africa and the totals of each provence thats not where they are supposed to be.

So when you run your macros, click on Version and then ALL . This will update all your existin macros. Should not have any problems running your add logs.

Link to comment

As I thought..

There is a new version of Add Logs Ver2.21

I have just updated to that version - I was a version behind - and it is still giving the same error message - if you look at the macro page it explains the changes this year. So only able to run this macro on caches you own.

I know that you can manually get the last 20 logs on a cache by downloading the gpx file from the cache listing on GC.com, but don't know how to get older logs than that.

Thanks for the help.

I am aware of the hard coding.

I did not realise you wanted to add loggs on caches that you dont own.

I have not tried to add more than 20 loggs as yet. And I am not sure if this is possible. The best advice I can give you is to post a thread on the gsak forum and see if you receive a answer on your question.
