Macs and the Ibycus topo maps. need some guidance.

I'm brand new to geocaching and am hooked already. I just got a oregon 300 for my birthday and would like to get the Ibycus topo maps, but I've run into some speed bumps.

 

First: There doesn't seem to be a mapsource program for mac. I don't have bootcamp or parallels and don't intend on getting them. are there any other programs or am I screwwed here?

 

Second: I can't find a mac bit torrent. will the other bit torrents work?

The most popular Bittorrent client for the Mac is Transmission http://www.transmissionbt.com/

 

Have you looked at

RoadTrip is the closest equivalent to MapSource on the Mac, and you can use MapInstall if you just want to get the maps onto the unit.

 

The most annoying thing is (although I'm not certain this is still true) all of Garmin's Mac apps use a different format for the map data, so unless someone has already posted a Mac-ified version of Ibycus Topo, you need to download it, install it on a Windows PC, run Garmin's MapConverter tool (http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3897) then copy the file that outputs to your Mac to install the maps there.

 

Personally, I just have a Windows partition on my Mac that I use through VMWare Fusion ... and almost the only things I use it for are GPS-related. (ie, GSAK and MapSource)

He also has some video tutorials on how to use the maps.

 

Hope this helps, I had no problems with the maps but it takes a long time, just be patient.

Thanks for the help. I just ended up downloading it off the website and used map installer to get it on my GPS. Now just to get the 3D veiw going. Apparently there isn't enough elevation data to do it. Any suggestions?

You need DEM data to get 3D views. The only product that has DEM data at the moment for Canada is the pre-programmed Garmin Topo Canada micro-SD cards.

 

If the non-Garmin map compiler add the ability to include DEM data, Ibycus can revise the maps to include the data. At this time, there is no way for anyone to add DEM data other than Garmin.
