+Emaxxe Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 Do you as a PAID SUBSCRIBER find it aggravating when... While you are using your paid service to search maps for caches... Have sponsor adds popup over the top of your search window... Now that be aggravating enough, the X button to close this window does not work either. Again we are not using a free service... we are already paid subscribers... I feel that if the company wants to sell adds that is fine just place these adds off to the side so it is not interfering with our pleasure... Don’t place them right over where you are trying to read. Tonight is the first time I have had these annoying adds... At first I thought that it may be from an out side source but when i moved the Groundspeak Maps Page the add moved with it... I sure hope this is not going to be the new standard for otherwise a Great piece of equipment... For Which we PAY A FEE to use... Emaxxe
+Lil Devil Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 This is being talked about in another thread. The sponsored ads box on the maps is being added by Google, not by Groundspeak. Groundspeak has actually been working to remove it.
+Prime Suspect Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I sure hope this is not going to be the new standard for otherwise a Great piece of equipment... For Which we PAY A FEE to use... No, you don't. The Maps are not a premium feature.

+pppingme Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 No, you don't. The Maps are not a premium feature. Neither are basic cache listings which have ads woven between the caches, but premium members aren't supposed to see ads, basic members are. GS is getting enough revenue from premium members and as evidenced by the past week of complaints of performance and issues doesn't seem very well earned, now they are trying to suck more money out of the well before showing a willingness to fix the problems?

Sure is funny it showed up at the same time as a site upgrade and other sites that use maps heavily aren't having this issue.
+mtn-man Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 OK, you got me. It is intentional so they can suck more money out of you. Um, if it *was* intentional, don't you think there would be some actual content in that window? Not going to make a whole boatload of money with no actual sponsored links now are we!

Um, if it *was* intentional, don't you think there would be some actual content in that window? Not going to make a whole boatload of money with no actual sponsored links now are we! I'm not giving or taking away credit for the ability to actually implement something, I'm stating the timing, and that point can't be argued. I have yet to see ANY evidence of any other site having this same issue. Show me one, and I withdraw my comments. This is about time lines, not programming ability.
+mtn-man Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Hmmm. I was responding to what I quoted from you directly. Since you can't refute to my comments, I guess you will now argue timing? Uh, OK. It didn't seem to be doing that when we were testing it last week. Yes, it started when it was sent to the live site. Yes, they are working to figure out what is causing this. Is your point that you should get a gold star for figuring out that it started after the last update?

The odd thing is I can't get this to happen to me using Firefox, or IE. I have tried multiple computers and tried logging in and out, yet I never get the box to appear. Seems like a more intermittent problem to me.
ao318 Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 I was having this problem also but if you look at these links, Sponsored Links and the Release notes, you will see that they have been fixed. I also checked other google maps when it started to see if it was something more and didn't find it on any other google map except for the ones at GC.com. Yes, I noticed it also at the same time the updates had been done. I made comments in the forums and the problem was solved almost immediately after posting those comments. As I said in those other posts, "Thank you for the quick response".
+yawppy Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 Sounds to me like you have a spyware issue, I have never seen pop ups, unless I forgot to log in. I see side banner be ads, but that is about the extent. You stated you justvrecently noticed this issue, the window does not close.. I suggest looking further into spyware, virus protection ! Just my 2 cents
+Lil Devil Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 In the past, I would only see the Sponsored Links box after I would click on a cache to get the info popup. I'm not seeing the SL box at all now so maybe it was finally fixed.
Ranger Fox Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 (edited) The Sponsored Links box seems to show up every now and then, perhaps having something to do with the last time it was shown on the map or the start of a new Google ad session. That makes it difficult for me to come up with a Greasemonkey script that will successfully eliminate it. I did come up with something, though. I'm waiting to see what happens over the next few days I view the maps. The script is so simple I doubt that's all there is to the cure. The problem is, of course, I can't replicate the behavior that prompts an ad to be shown. Here's the HTML responsible for showing the ads: <div class="gmnoprint" style="-moz-user-select: none; z-index: 0; position: absolute; right: 3px; bottom: 15px;"> <div style="text-align: right; margin-right: 0px; margin-left: auto;"> </div> <div style="border: 1px solid rgb(167, 121, 34); color: rgb(136, 104, 20); background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255); opacity: 0.7;"> <iframe id="ad_legend_module" height="250" frameborder="0" width="258" scrolling="no" src="http://maps.google.com/maps/stk/legend?channel=achannel&client=pub-4515533114039152&num_ads=10&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geocaching.com%2Fmap%2Fdefault.aspx%3Flat%3D35.94417%26lng%3D-79.31518&vap=149f&vtl=ap.92&ll=35.94417%2C-79.31518&spn=0.020707%2C0.052056&z=15&hostrelayurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.geocaching.com%2Frobots.txt&rpctoken=hoodji" name="ad_legend_module" style="display: block;" allowtransparency="true"> <html> </html> </iframe> </div> </div> </div> The simple Greasemonkey script: // ==UserScript== // @name Remove Google Maps Sponsored Links // @namespace RangerFox.Geocaching // @description Removes the pesky Google Maps Sponsored Links advertising. // @include http://www.geocaching.com/map/default.aspx* // ==/UserScript== var ad = document.getElementById('ad_legend_module'); var addiv = ad.parentElement; if (addiv != null) addiv.style.display = 'none'; if (ad != null) ad.style.display = 'none'; Edited March 13, 2009 by Ranger Fox
+JBnW Posted March 13, 2009 Posted March 13, 2009 And I've posted a couple times when this came up, went away, came back... Thank you very much for your efforts to fix this problem originating from an outside source. Your efforts are appreciated!

Have sponsor adds popup over the top of your search window... Now that be aggravating enough, the X button to close this window does not work either. Best not to use the X when closing a spammer popup - it can run malware. Use Task Manager instead & also improve your security. At the browser level, I use Firefox with Adblock Plus & Customize Google add-ons. I've not seen an Internet ad for years!
