+Windarii Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I am seeing if anyone has an opinion or experience with any of the Gramin Etrax series GPS. I've been looking for a low cost GPS with color display and the Etrax series is close to my price range. Thanks, Team WinJim Quote
+PDOP's Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Which model in the eTrex series? There are many. Quote
jmundinger Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I think you would be very satisfied with either the Venture HC or the Summit HC. Don't get one of the older models - they cost about the same cost but do not have the newer, high sensitivity receiver. Don't get the eTrex H - it's a good unit but the increased functionality of the Venture HC or the Summit HC is well worth the additional price and both of those units come with a USB cable which offsets part of the cost differential. +Windarii Posted February 25, 2009 Author Posted February 25, 2009 I know there are many, just trying to get an idea which one geocachers perfer. Quote
+Chrysalides Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 I know there are many, just trying to get an idea which one geocachers perfer. If you don't need the ability to route, don't want or need an electronic compass / barometer and don't plan to load lots of maps, the Venture HC is a great unit. Quote
+briansnat Posted February 25, 2009 Posted February 25, 2009 There not only many models of eTrex there are several generations. Oddly enough some units from the first generation are still in Garmin's line (The Legend and Vista). Avoid those. The units with the H in the model name are the newest and best. From what I've seen the Legend HCX is probably the most popular. It is a fine choice for geocaching Quote
+fwav8or Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 I agree w/ Briansnat. I am new to geocaching and I bought a Garmin Legend at first but then took it back and exchanged it for a Garmin Vista HCx. I made the upgrade specifically for the electronic compass, which has come in handy on more than one occasion. You don't have to be moving to get a bearing, which is GREAT! They say the electronic compass drains the battery a little faster, but I have had excellent battery life with mine. It's advertised, I believe, as 17 hrs of battery life and I have gotten at least that if not more. Quote
+scvmeat Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Agreed on the Vista HCx. I could not be happier with the purchase. The compass has come in handy and I routinely get 20+ hours of battery life. You will not be disappointed! Quote
