What are Geo Coins?

Hi

We are new to geocaching and found our first cache today. WOOOO!!!!

I'm interested in finding more about geo coins and what you do with them if you find one? Do you collect them or do you take them and add them to another cache? If you find one what should youm leave in it;s place? Soooo many questions LOL

Geocoins are trackable coins and work in the sam way as travelbugs and move from cahe to cache, sometimes with a spefific mission.

 

Some coins are left as pizes for a 'first to find' but it is not that likley you will come accrose these unless you are FTF hunter.

Geocoins are coins that come in many sizes, shapes and designs. They are very much like a military challenge coin but they have a unique tracking number. When you find one you can do a couple of things.

 

1. You can discover the coin. To do this just write down the tracking number and LEAVE the coin in the cache. When you log the cache you should see a section on the right that has a little icon for the coin and the 'name' that the owner gave it. You click it and from that page select discovered from the drop down list, enter the number you have and write what ever you like. You can also see where the little bugger has traveled to and any goal or mission it has.

 

2. You can take the coin. Coins and Bugs are not considered Swag items so you don't have to leave one in it's place. You then goto the same page I mentioned before but mark that you retrieved the coin. You have the coin but it is NOT yours to keep. In another cache you find later (in a short period from when you took it) you leave the coin and then when you log the cache find you select the coin from a list that will be shown on the bottom of the page that you left it. The coin will then be logged in that cache and the milage between the cache you took it from and the one you left it in will be added to it's milage. Thats the 10 cent version of it.

 

Oh Yes - for every coin to discover or move you get a new neat little icon on your personal page if that items has a unique icon - Coins are very fun - Go get em
