+briansnat
It can be used, but it's far from the best choice for geocaching. It's not designed for outdoor use. Anyway, make certain you have it set in the pedestrian mode and it should get you near the cache. Quote Link to comment
rapriebe
Hi, I put some co ordinates in my car garmin nuvi 660, i don't think it's accurate enough for walking, can it be used ? It needs to be in pedestrian and off road mode or the vehicle will always "snap" to the nearest road. Also use it in 2D view when walking. There are a number of cachers who seem to successfully use automotive GPSr's for caching, but they are far from being ideal. You can't take long walks with them because they don't have a long enough battery charge... about 3 hours is all I'd depend on, and less than that if the unit is a couple of years old. My eTrex Summit HC gets about 14 hours with just 2 AA alkaline batteries which makes it a far better choice for any extensive use out of the car, and when the batteries die you just pop in a fresh set and keep going. +Chuy!
I had a 660, now have a Nuvi 750. The few times I have used the Nuvi for caching is when I forget the Vista at home. For me, to avoid changing the settings and back again to vehicle mode, I find it much easier to go to the satellite screen and navigate by the numbers. The #s go up when moving N and W. Of course you have to know the coordinates first - that's where GSAK and POIs come in handy. What I hated about the 660 is deleting the waypoints enmasse. You have to reset the dafault settings by going into maintenance mode. I think you touch the upper right corner as the GPS turns on. Quote Link to comment
