2009 Benchmark Hunting Contest - SETTINGS

Recommended Posts

So.. if I have a pair of threes and a plethora of eights but no fives, can i trade one of my eights for a five with someone??

Yes

Can you use them in This contest?

Maybe

UNK1

YES??!!!! Hehe ;) once i thought of that I had to post it.

I guess the details are forthcoming but I still haven't figured out how we are posting our finds for the contest. Did I miss something?

I don't know for sure but, I assume the posting of our finds should be along the lines of the previous contests. Here is the Spring of 2007 contest "Logging Thread" for the first example of how it has been done in the past. Then there was the fall of 2007 contest "The Poker Fun Run Logging Thread".

You brought back memories when you asked about a "pair of 3s", that was our "Poker Fun Run". It was a difficult contest for both the contestant and the scorekeeper. UNK1's contest sounds easier and a lot less stressful for everyone.

Good hunting to everyone when the contest starts! I know we are going to go find some.;)

Bill, I hadn't posted the format yet. I was going to do that when I started the new thread for logging your finds.

It will be a simple process to log your finds. You will need to post a link to the GC.com benchmark page with your log on it. The name of the link will be --- the PID#, the designation for the benchmark, the setting Number on the benchmark page, and the monument date if you wish to collect a bonus for the monument date. For example it would look like this FV0004, Z 24, #38, 1920. In addition to the previous link you would need to include the link to the "view original datasheet" for GC.com since no setting number is shown on the benchmark page. Like this setting #38.

If there are any other questions, now is the time to ask them, before the contest starts.

Perhaps the scoring postings should be something like this:

FV0004, Z 24

Setting #38 20 points

Note the inclusion of the points being claimed for that recovery, and the separation of the links.

That makes sense to me. We will do it that way for the contest.

Not that one couldn't engrave a TB number on the bottom...

That HOPI one is awesome!

I thought I would just 'bump' this thread up as a friendly reminder to everyone that wants to be in the contest, to sign-up in the 2009 Benchmark Hunting Contest Sign-up Thread (link below).

Link to the Sign-up Thread.

Remember, the contest starts on March 15th. You do not have to start that day of course, but you have to be signed up before that date to start hunting whenever you are ready.

Just a heads up for everyone. :(

Here are a couple of revisions to the rules.

Bonus points for getting 9 different settings - 10 points

Bonus points for getting 18 different settings - 25 points

There will be a handicap for those in the cold frozen north - Post a picture of the benchmark with the ground covered in snow and get a 5 point bonus for the first benchmark of each setting number and a 1 point bonus for all others in the snow. The ground MUST be covered with snow to get the bonus.

.. Wait, if the station is in the ground, you would have to clear the snow off of it to see it in the picture. But then, the ground wouldn't be covered in snow. So it's a catch-22! Aargh. :)

You have some faulty logic there. The benchmark is not part of the ground, also not all benchmarks are set at ground level.

...See, THIS is why I don't live in the north! Sheesh. I know of several stations here that are under the level of ground. :)

And for all you complaining that you're eager to start - you need to do more planning!

Since at least year-old finds are up for grabs, I'll have a whole slew of points in my first week, just re-founding previously-found stations. :)

[An yeah, I'm as anxious as everyone else, in case it isn't apparent...]

Could a prize-winning finisher perhaps defer their pre-determined prize and choose a lower-ranking prize as outlined in the above schedule of prizes?

You mean that you would like to have the card reader or maybe the autographed picture of HOPI?:blink:

If the person who comes in, in that position (you are interested in) is willing to trade, I have no objections.

Not to be rude, but it seems that at that point you are no longer in control...other than where you send the prize.

In the past contests, the first place finisher has had their choice of the available prizes, and subsequent finishers have chosen from the remainder.

I assert that First Place should equal First Choice.

Why should anyone be 'forced' to accept a prize they don't really fancy, when something they do fancy has yet to be claimed?

Yes, I have made up my mind. I'll have the HOPI paperweight or nothing.

photographe-3032.gifOur Camera is ready and has fully charged batteries. The Hemi is all fueled up and has "6" brand new all terrain 10 ply sidewall tires (had to get 2 extra for the spares), so we can go far out in the boonies and get home again.

John filled up his cornstarch vial and I have the new Delorme Topo USA 7.0 with the little GPSr attached to my laptop, so I am ready to be the navigator. clever6613.gif

So, when we have a free day together, away we go!

An LT-40 Earthmate is what connects to the laptop and does an outstanding job of keeping the little car going along the ups and downs in 3D!

I think Klemmer may have the PN-40.

We had been drewlin' over them before Christmas, but we already have two Magellans that are not broken - so you do not buy new till that time.

Yeah, especially in this economy.. I understand that. My very first GPS was a DeLorme PN-20 - so I have no idea what people are talking about when they say 'Mapsource' and other stuff. Since I'm a map freak, the ability to have the USGS maps is what sold me on it. (And, not to mention, my own custom scanned maps!)

But, I digress. Sorry. <_<

Here is a link to the "wand type metal detector" that Klemmer is donating as a prize for the contest. It is used, but he says it is in very good condition.

After discussions with him it has been decided that the person who finds the most DNFs will get the detector. To claim a find for a DNF the last (most recent) log on the benchmark page must be a "Did Not Find" or "Destroyed" log.

As an aside, in the logging thread, the line:

You can only claim 1 monumentation bonus for each setting number, so choose wisely when to log your finds.
was added. I think you should consider removing that.

My reasoning for this is as follows - when doing my research for marks around me, I had at least one "UNK" monumentation date for every setting. Now, unless others can come here and say that they DON'T have this, for me it's easy to assume that all us contestants would have this situation. Okay, so tht being said, if we can only get one monumentation bonus per setting, obviously everyone would wait until they got an UNK date and claim that one. That would make the scores pretty even all around, leaving it more to who finds more.

I figure that if us contestants could get one of EACH monumented date bonus on each setting(*), then it would spread out the scores a little more.

Just a thought. I'm still sick, and my girl has locked the front door and took my key.

(*) - For example, let's say I find 3 setting 36's. One was monumented in 1945, one in 1903, the last in 1973. I could claim the <1960 on the 1945 one, the <1933 bonus on the 1903 one, and no bonus on the 1973 one.

The intent of this contest is to focus on settings. If I allow multiple bonuses per settings, then it is just an age related contest which has already been done. I will however change the rule to allow the monumentation bonus to used at the finders discretion, but retain the 1 bonus per setting number.

We took advantage of the snow bonus on two recoveries yesterday, but found most of the problems coming from the snow melt! Most of the marks were covered by very deep puddles or lakes. In some cases, the ground has not thawed enough so there is substantial ice that a blow torch won't melt. LOL

It was a heck of a lot of fun going to back or trying to go back to some of these marks we recovered 4 or 5 years ago though. But, I think we'll hold off another month on the ground ones and just try to recover the marks on the buildings and bridges.

Talking to a friend yesterday, he mentioned something and had apparently misunderstood the points, so I want to clarify for everyone else - and to let UNK1 correct me if I'm wrong:

ANY 'date monumented' bonus MUST be on the FIRST station of a specific setting.

Therefore, if you find a 1999 Setting 33 first, and then a UNK Setting 33, you would only get 11 points. (10 for the first, 1 for the second). NOT 36 (10 for the first, 26 for the second + 25 UNK bonus)

Taking that a step forward - you can't claim a 3/16/09 recovery on an UNK first for 35 points (10 for first, 25 for UNK bonus), and THEN claim a 3/15/09 recovery for 1 point.

Me.

I posted a revised rule for the monumentation bonuses yesterday. They are repeated here........

Quote "I could not edit the above post due to the 24 hour rule, so here is the final version on the bonuses.

A revision to the bonus rules:

Bonus scoring will be for the following criteria.

Bonus points for getting 9 different settings - 10 points

Bonus points for getting 18 different settings - 25 points

Bonus points for getting 27 different settings - 60 points

Bonus points for getting all 36 different settings 150 points

Bonus points for monument date of "UNK" - 25 points (ONLY 1 benchmark of each setting number)

Bonus points for monument dates pre-1960 - 5 points (ONLY 1 benchmark of each setting number)

Bonus points for monument dates pre-1935 -10 points (ONLY 1 benchmark of each setting number)

Bonus points for monument dates pre-1900 - 15 points. (ONLY 1 benchmark of each setting number)

Monument dates are when the benchmark was set (from the GC.com pages). Note, you cannot claim pre-1900, pre-1935, and pre-1960 bonus all for the same benchmark! You can only claim one bonus per benchmark monumentation. You can only claim each monumentation bonus once for each setting number.

Note that there are 4 different monumentation bonuses meaning a maximum of 4 bonuses per setting type." End Quote

I had removed the "First only" requirement from this updated rule.

The standard scoring is 10 points for the first recovery of that particular setting, so you will always get 10 points the first time you make a recovery for a setting you had not previously found.

Does this help?

I have a rules question, regarding whether some benchmarks may be eligible for the contest. For instance, GR1855 and the other similar markers at Hoover Dam. You obviously can't climb out there and take a photo with your GPS next to the disc. In fact, most of them you can't get closer than hundreds of feet away - US Gov't land, trespass laws, extreme hazardous conditions... Are these marks and others like them voided for the contrest ?

I don't want to waste your or my time posting them if they are not eligible.

If you have a picture showing the stamping/designation (hopefully clear enough to read so the mark can be verified) then feel free to use it in the contest.

So I take it that 'marks' with no setting code, or codes other than those on the list on the sign-up page are not allowed for scoring purposes?

Correct, the setting number from the list on the sign up page is the one that counts. As noted in a previous post, if the GC.com page doesn't show the number you will need to reference the datasheet that GC.com used when they populated their online database. (use the "view original datasheet" button on the benchmark page)

Remember that it is the setting Number that will be used.

UNK1

Okay. I'm looking at one where the 'view original data sheet' does not show the setting, but the NGS datasheet does. Can I reference the NGS datasheet?

Would these count?

FV0009 Disk is missing but stem is still in place.

FV0012 The top of the concrete has been sheared off and the mark is nowhere around.

Should we just log marks like these and let the judges decide or ask each time before logging?
