It must be, I've gone for a whole bunch of caches that I can't get to because the park is locked at some particular time, this seems to be a common issue in London.

 

But please mention the opening hours on the cache page, and please make an effort to discover if the opening hours are variable (for example, if it closes earlier in winter). It's my fault if I didn't read the cache page and see the opening hours, but it isn't my fault if I go there at 6pm, and it closed at 5, when the cache page said 7.

Of course. Just state the opening hours on the cache description and you're set. Depending on the situation, and since it's an area managed by someone or an entity, it would be advisable to place the cache with their ok.

I would ofcourse make this information available. This would be inside a building and not a park or outside. I can't see any reason why it should cause a problem but after having to fight my cause for pretty much every cache i've hidden in the last 4 years I can just see this being rejected too

 

Long gone are the days of finding a cache inside a fenced off, chained up disused hospital smothered in asbestos warning signs - those were the days

I had a couple placed in small London 'Gardens'. These were gated and the opening time was stated as being 'dawn until dusk'. In practise it meant whatever time the key-holder arrived to unlock or lock the gates. Sometimes they were open all night; at other times, if the key-holder had an important meeting at the pub, you'd find they would be locked up by mid afternoon.

Give co-ords for the entrance, make it clear there's no need to buy anything, pay anything and you're not being coerced into anything, add directions to the cache and... it still falls foul of this, from the guidelines: "The geocache is presumed to be commercial if the finder is required to go inside a business, interact with employees, and/or purchase a product or service, or if the cache listing has overtones of advertising, marketing, or promotion." - You can still promote a free-to-enter location. Still, good luck with it. You might get lucky (It's in Tring, isn't it?)

I'll stick to finding the tres interesting, 10 meters down a muddy footpath caches once a year like I have ever since the slimy old rule book became such a feature

Don't give up mate; it's worth asking a reviewer directly, as if it's where I think it might be, there's a good chance the educational element could 'sell' the idea. We're all concerned with quality, and The Dan (or Rocky) name is still shorthand for 'excellent cache' round these parts!

Why not email the reviewers and ask what their view on it is?

 

The worst they can do is say no.

 

They might even think its a great cache!

I think that the issue here (as mentioned above) will be permission from the owner, and I would imagine that this would need to be in writing. Perhaps a passing reviewer could confirm this.

The IOW example might be grandfathered in, but if it's within the guidelines it might be because the NT is not a "business" but a charity.

 

I only ask for "academic" reasons, but I wonder if a passing reviewer would clarify?

Another example could be a cache inside a Tourist Information office. Would that be allowable; after all, it's not a business, you wouldn't pay to get in, but you would most likely have to ask for the cache so there would be interaction.

I would have thought that such a cache would be allowable as it's in the spirit of caching; although I can see why a cache in a restaurant or shop wouldn't be (there's bound to be a suspicion of commercial gain).

I was tickled by the last log - they logged a found it even though they didn't find the cache, on the basis that they had paid to get in .

Several of my caches are disguised, but I woudn't personally use that one

The problem with that is, people take their kids caching, and no-one wants to encourage kids to check out dog poo in case it's a cache. Don't you have the same concerns in whatever country you come from?

 

I've seen pine cones, logs, sticks, birds, plants, rocks, a fake skull. and even a fake tree I think the test is, would you want kids to be picking it up?

I quite agree with you about the children issue, it's just that I went onto a website from USA and they had different things to hide your cache in and the fake dog poo was one of them.

I visited this cache(now archived) a few years back with the windywalkers(Jan. 12th 05) ,most people thought the cache amusing,and some interesting logs followed.

Pictures - Cool Cache Containers ?

I always check that out every few months, just to see what devious ideas have been developed. Of course some of them rely on the great swaths of wilderness that exit in the USA; though check out the one at the top of Page 53 it's from Germany. A Walnut up a tree!!!

 

I've made stones in the past with cement, 35mm pot and some paint. Our finds have included bird boxes, decorative bird 'house', rocks, electrical boxes, amongst others.

It sure beats the film pot in the ivy!

 

I see you are new and already have a ratio of 20 finds / 2 own. I wouldn't rush at it; as you increase your finds some ideas will come to you about what is a good or bad cache.

 

But a hearty welcome to the sport/hobby/obsession!

 

 

Ahhh - we're a bit off topic... So back on...

 

Yes, it's OK to put caches in places that are locked up at certain times, so long as all the relevant info is explained in the pages. What you can't do is put caches in places that require specialist membership (though that doesn't stop caches being published in Iraq and Afghanistan that are 'within the wire'; I guess that's because the locals don't cache but lots of US Military do!!!)

I remember doing a cache some time ago with Hi-Tek and Omally, so I guess we were down in Hampshire somewhere. I'll not give away the cache name or waypoint but the encrypted hint was 'Ask Angela'. Angela was the lady who served in a mobile snack bar and who kept the cache box safe under the counter.

I tried doing that one with drsolly but it was outside office/business hours, so no Angela to ask. Still, some nice views of the Isle of Wight and lots more caches in the area for us to do by bike.

 

Back on topic, there has to be a difference between hiding a new physical in a shop or pub against a free museum or free art gallery. I'd expect (hope!) reviewers look at the context of the cache rather than just 'do you have to interact with someone to get it?'
