I don't think that this is anything dirty, I actually found it in a log and guessed that it isn't unusual to say things like that in some places in the world. If you do this puzzle then you will see that line in a log also! Maybe you can figure out what it means because I sure don't know.

 

I am not sure what it means but I was sure it would catch your attention.

 

This is a Mystery/Puzzle and it is part of the Christmas Caching Puzzle

I could have called it "what geocoin?"

 

This cointest is dedicated to a trackable item who was lost and then found and then lost again and the mission of that Travelbug is perhaps the secret to the cointest.

BexyBear has a problem, he has a geocoin he doesn't want. (or not)

BexyBear went to a geocache and found a beautiful geocoin in the geocache, how lucky is BexyBear?!

BexyBear knew that this beautiful geocoin was supposed to be tracked so he went ahead and logged the geocoin using the WAP interface and his mobile phone, all was well in the bear den until BexyBear sat at his computer and found he had a bug with a bug.

Since this is the thread where the geocoins are discussed and it is a geocoin perhaps you can help BexyBear

 

If you are ready to go armchair geocaching let's figure out what happened on the other side of the world on a beautiful December day. Every time you see the name of a Geocacher or a Geocache or a Travel Bug or a Geocoin it is really a way to link to a profile. If you are a new geocacher start with things you can be sure of and search them. Use the tabs in the profiles to follow the geocachers and trackable items around to see what happened to them. Links are an easy way to access the records of other geocachers, travel bugs and items you have moved, discovered or found. This isn't complicated, people log items they have in their hands or maybe they don't, often people who don't log items don't know how! Sometimes they say what they did in the log and then it is time to figure what really happened.

 

In this mystery you are trying to figure out a few things. See how many you can answer.

Do not post the answers here, they must be provided in email, use the geocaching.com website to send me the email with the answers. You must provide four correct answers to be eligible for the draw.

 

What geocoin does BexyBear have that he doesn't want? Provide the public TB tracking number.

Where did BexyBear find the geocoin? Provide the GC number of the cache.

Who left the geocoin there for BexyBear to find? Provide the geocachers exact name.

Where did the geocacher above find the geocoin that BexyBear now has? Provide the GC number of the cache.

 

Anyone who can answer those four questions will be eligible in the drawing of a new unactivated First Geocache in Canada geocoin. To be eligible for any stage prize a contestant must have found at least one geocache. If you are a new geocacher just reading these puzzles and have never found a geocache then get out the door and find a geocache now!

If you wish to to be entered in this contest then go ahead and send me an email using my profile on geocaching.com. Provide the answers to those four questions and your name will be entered in the draw.

You must put the words "stage one" somewhere in your email.

You may enter any stage only once.

You do not need to enter any stage to be eligible for other stages.

Stages will become progressively harder.

When you enter a stage post a message here in this thread telling others what stage you have entered. Comments are welcome.

Please do not post answers here.

I'm looking forward to delving further into this when I have more time available on the Comp. (Only 2hrs today)

 

I think it will be great to have you playing Write Shop Robert!

It will be challenging for newcomers and oldtimers alike.

 

For anyone who is an old hand on the forums knows how to use the geocaching.com website then you might want to take a crack at this puzzle called "what contest?".

 

It is a puzzle for geocachers, it is about geocaching but it has a very nice First to Find prize that any geocoin collector would be happy to have.

A note to all entrants.

Every stage is solvable, some may take more work than others but they are solvable.

Check your answers before sending them to make sure you have the required information. Allowances are being made for stage one but as stages advance it is important to get it right!

 

A bit of butty munching is in order about now!

Thanks to everyone who has entered, stage two will be tougher.

 

Thanks to the folks from England who have pointed out that a butty is a sandwich, you had us all worried!

I'm guessing that the way the term is used here in the title, it would mean something more like: Chewing on a problem, gnawing it down to the answer?

You are very right, we are "gnawing it down to an answer".

 

Pay attention to Eartha, if you breezed through Stage One then you better know about the travel bugs in the cache. You better know them really well. You better know them better than that.

 

If you don't know the name of this cat and cannot produce the associated public TB tracking number then you are not ready for Stage Two. Stage Two will be a time limited stage.

I enjoyed looking at that cache, it looks like a beautiful spot. Paul posted a very nice sunset shot and it just looks so nice and warm and well.... really nice.

 

Glad to have you in the contest BoatBird and yes, it will get much much harder than Stage One.

Congratulaitons to snowball58!

 

snowball58 was the winner of the First Geocache in Canada geocoin for correctly answering all of the questions in Stage One.

Stage One is now closed.

 

Now we are moving to Stage Two and there will be a new prize.

The prize for Stage Two is going to be an Albertosaurus Geocoin. These Albertosaurus geocoins are the nickel version, these were never for sale and they are a really nice geocoin, trackable on geocaching.com with a custom icon.

Hello Everyone and Welcome to Stage Two

Things get a little harder in this Stage.

As you all know this is a story about trackable items and their journey through a cache.

If you completed the first stage then you know we just tried to help BexyBear straighten out his problem with the guitar geocoin!

If you looked at the cache then you know things have not gone so well at Hartshead Pike.

If you think you know the trackable items at the cache then you will like this stage.

You need to know a few things, actually you need to answer twenty questions!

These are the twenty questions in Stage Two of The Mystery of Hartshead Pike.

3) What is the licence plate number on the vehicle they used to get to this cache?

If these answers aren't immediately apparent that is OK, that is why it is a mystery!

Stage Three gets even harder than this, this is a walk in the park compared to Stage Three.

To qualify for the Stage Two prize you only need to answer these twenty questions.

This is the largest Stage in terms of questions, Stage Three will be very short.

 

If you have read this far then you might want to know that there will be a Bonus Prize for the first person to correctly complete Stage Two, an FTF prize. It will be trackable and have a custom icon.

 

Have fun everyone and I hope you learn a little about tracking trackable items through a cache!

My computer just doesn't move fast enough for this.

Way too many questions to try to find , for a second stage of How many stages???? to have a chance to win one geocoin... LOL...I'm too old for this.

Not to worry opalsns.

This contest is really designed to help new (and experienced) geocachers learn how to negotiate the website, follow links and read the logs left by others.

I personally enjoy the armchair aspect of trying to figure out some of the problems that can happen with trackable items. There are many examples of good, bad and helpful logs in this particular puzzle and the examples may help others figure out what can make a good log better.

The "detective" aspect of these kinds of puzzles may intimidate some but when new geocachers take on these puzzles they really learn a lot.

 

I have really appreciated your comments and thread bumps. I also appreciate that you encourage others to try these puzzles. So I will tell you what, I will encourage you. :)

 

If you do this Stage Two puzzle and get the answers right (take your time) I will send you an Albertosaurus geocoin just because you have been such a good sport, essentially you are automatically guaranteed a win on this Stage if you complete the puzzle.

 

There will still be a geocoin draw for everyone who completes the stage, this geocoin for opalsns is an "in addition to" prize.

for question 8 the code for what tb? am I missing something?

 

If you have figured out who it is then the TB code should present itself very readily.

I wouldn't ask you to identify a someone out of theblue you know!

You can figure out who it is pretty easily, now why would I ask you to figure that out?

The cat's name is Dido and she is owned by a geocacher named PeaBea. PeaBea took the picture to celebrate the fact that she had TBT3QN, The Cat Coin, Dido had four kittens.

Oh boy- you were right wavector, they are getting hard much quicker! I'm pleased though that I got the answers right for the first round! I can identify some of the photos here easily but I guess I will have to spend a couple of hours in research and get back to you! Well done snowball58!

I don't know any of these people either, except through their geocaching logs and gallery photos. :D

 

Every question I have placed into Stage Two is related in some fashion to the trackable items that have visited Hartshead Pike or are listed as being in that geocache.

When you are looking at the cache there is a box on the right hand side showing the Inventory (it lists the trackable items in the cache). Just below the items is a link called See the history.

This history is a record of all the trackable items that have passed through the cache.

Another very important thing to remember is that geocaching really isn't about geocaches and trackable items as some people seem to think, it is about connecting to the people that own geocaches and trackable items in a unique fashion, and geocaching is unique. There has never been an activity that is like geocaching. Letterboxing to some degree but in Letterboxing the Internet isn't even required.

So focus on the history of the trackable items. Look at the items listed as being in the cache. Look at cache owners and trackable item owners. Read the logs. Use the links that the geocaching website provides right on the cache page and remember it isn't just about trackable items it is about the people behind the geocaching landscape.
