A "flying" track

First post so go easy on me...

I have a 60Csx and recently took it on a helicopter flight with me. (I am a gunner on a search and rescue helicopter in the USAF.) I was wondering if I there is a program that will allow me to import the track and re-create my flight from the "view" of our aircraft.

I was thinking if I could import the track and all of its information to include altitude into Google Earth and let the program fly it..

Does this make any sense?

Google Earth is the way to go. Make sure to have your unit log it's raw tracks to a data card, open the .gpx into google earth and make sure the track isn't clamped to ground.

An active log, or the track log on the SD card (but not a "saved" track in the unit itself) will have all the info you need. Just open it in Mapsource to view it as exampled here:

How do I make sure it is not clamped to the ground?

What would be super cool is if GE could import the info and let you plug it into the included flight sim and then let the sim do the rest!

When you open the gpx file or download from GPS, UNCHECK "Adjust altitudes to ground height". That makes for an interesting perspective when viewed from the side if in the air, mountains, high rise building, etc.

My nuvi 750 seems to stop logging tracks over 300 mph, even though at the time it appears to be tracking (blue line).

I took the file I dl'd from my unit and converted it with GPSBabel to unclamp it from the ground, and that worked, too. Especially my tracks from hitting the rides at Disneyland!

My Legend will show speeds higher than that, I tried it on a trip to SoCal and back once, hit 598 MPH on the way back. Why couldn't the captain have squeezed out those last 2 MPH?!

Regarding the original questions, you might want to run your track through the online program: GPS Visualizer

Use the: "Convert your file for use in Google Earth", Google Earth KML link.

The advantage is that it gives you some nice track options.

Under the Track Options settings, choose:

Set altitude: Absolute, for flights

Draw a shadow: on the ground, choose your opacity.

Colorize: by Altitude/Elevation

Then you will have a track, in the air, changing colors as it changes altitude, with a shadow on the ground.

ThreeGeo, little oftopic

Do you have a good reception in a helicopter, are the sat's not covered by the rotorblades?

Not at all! In fact, I usually put the unit inside without having the antenna actually having a clear shot of the sky. We also use an internal GPS for our navigation system that has the ant. mounted just aft of the main rotor head. Honestly, the rotor speed is not all that high.

This is the helicopter I am on. The HH60G Pave Hawk

GPSTrackmaker.

Now I have not flown for real but In a vehicle I have navigated and made many programs for Google Earth Plus with this program.

I have read some and played some with the altutude controls you have in real time as well as saved tracks.

You will just have to try it for yourself and see if it will do what you want.

There is a little more advanced program called DGTV wich is really cool as well.

I hope this answers your question.
