Thanks chaps

Recommended Posts

Hiya, just thought I'd say thanks to everyone that I've met along my caching journey.

Those that know us closely know that we have gone our separate ways, and whilst being a huge emotional blow, has rendered this username useless. (for those who know what it means at least!) I no longer feel motivated at all to go out caching! I'm sure I'll keep in touch with the local wotsits, and probably show my face at local shindigs, but I thought it fitting to thank everyone, and say that there will be no more caches found by this username.

I have asked on a couple of occasions if this username could be changed, but after being ignored both by regional mods and the merkin organisation I feel it is a lost cause.. Perhaps I might cache again under another name.

Thanks again, happy caching.

Jim.

It seems that a reminder of this Forum's Guidlines is required at this point:

"1. Forum courtesy: Please treat Groundspeak, its employees, volunteers, fellow community members, and guests on these boards with courtesy and respect."

I have edited the OP's quote below to use more appropriate language:

<snip>I have asked on a couple of occasions if this username could be changed, but after being ignored both by regional mods and the <Groundspeak organisation> I feel it is a lost cause.. Perhaps I might cache again under another name.<snip>

Jim.

With reference to his comment, I've had a look back through the OP's forum posts and I have not been able to find one in which he has requested the above information regarding changing his user name. The posters to this Forum are usually helpful and such information is generally quickly forthcoming, as Deceangi has shown in his response above.

I hope the OP will now be able to change his name if necessary and will continue to enjoy caching again in the future.

Well I've re-read the original post and considering the unfortunate circumstances the OP finds himself in I consider it a very polite and courteous message, hardly in need of criticism, implied or explicit.

I assume you are objecting to the term "merkin" as that's the word you edited in your quote. To my way of thinking it is a light hearted play on the word "American" and is in no way discourteous. I can't imagine any Americans being overly upset about the word (or am I missing something?).

It seems to me that if it is now considered as offensive then there are some very precious people reading this forum these days and perhaps they should get themselves some tougher skin. To take it to the next step, are we still allowed to call people from the USA "Yanks"?

I agree with big bob. My first thought after reading the first post is (and since nobody else has mentioned it I going to say it): Sorry to hear that your caching partnership has come unstuck (the caching part of it being the minor part of course).

And then of course those 0s and 1s... (I have an idea of what it's about, but not the detail)

Good Luck Jim.

Careful with the use of the word Merkin on here, people have been known to be upset by people calling them a pubic wig.

Thanks :)

I have seen that now! No doubt I'll be out caching again under a different name, I don't think there's any escaping TheHoomer!! I'll definately be around at future bashes anyway. Tar!

Jim.

There. Seems much understandable.

edit: spelling.

I have personally received complaints from US citizens who found being referred to as a merkin insulting. And have seen it used in a derogatory way. As such please do not use the word to describe US citizens in this forum.

Nor to describe Sporrans, something which has not ever been applicable, and is insulting to any person who wears a Sporran.

Sorry, I never intended to insult anyone - pure ignorance on my part, so i have deleted my original post.

I find the term 'Limey' somewhat insulting but can find numerous uses of that word by USA forum users but no censorship by the mods over there for them.

Ah, the old "different rules for the UK section" debate, along with toe-ing the line around racism! What have I done!!??

I personally see no problem with the term "merkin" but as the powers that be, deccy and mandarin (who I've yet to become aquainted with) have said, some people do, and I have apologised to mandarin for any offence I may have caused.

Still, I spend most days being called a pommie by australian friends, limey by american friends, and if I were to repeat what certain of my asian friends call me I'd be instabanned. I think political correctness can be taken too far, and feel that so called public open fora (forae?) tend to be policed rather more than is necessary.

My comment was made in a light hearted manner, and should be taken so.

Thanks to mandarin who PM'd me I now know what one definition of "merkin" means (this link isn't offensive but it does discuss adult matters in a mature way). I would not have known this had it not been for the editing of the OP. I had always thought it meant

"Then "merkin" was coined afresh to mean "an American", because it sounds a bit like the half-swallowed pronunciation of "American" bysome Americans, particularly President Lyndon Johnson; and the fact that it had a "naughty" meaning didn't hurt."
(From here)

However, even so, I do question whether it was necessary to censor this thread just because a couple of overly sensitive (IMHO) Americans were "offended". It seems to me that they need to grow a thicker skin. I too dislike being described as a "Limey" but I don't make a fuss about it, I just give a mental shrug and get on with my life.

Maybe I should report every little thing that offends me <shrug> - but there again maybe I'll just get on with life.

Umm.. excuse me... I know I missed the mega bash and pirate mania.. but did I not organise the LAST oxfordshire monthly meet!?? Still I shall have to break in my new username when I decide what it's going to be.

I think coming back in here and talking to old cachers has spurred me on to start caching again, the camping event was the last time I cached!

Thanks again.

Thank you Deceangi. I have just looked up to see what a merkin is, and I am insulted about it being referred to as a sporran.
(OT) I thought Sporrans were, you know, symbolic...?

(BOT*) Sorry to hear things went pear-shaped Jim, but I hope you got enough out of caching to want to continue, with a new name or an edited one. Chin up, etc.

Why don't TPTB add the dadgum word to the filter that filters out insulting words? :)

That seems like a good idea, given the diverse range of words that are filtered.

So then, back on topic...

What was the topic exactly?

a - A Thank you and goodbye

b - A request for assistance in changing a name

c - A request for motivation

d - Something else...

So then, very sorry to hear you have problems and I hope this motley crew that lurk in these forum pages have helped in some way

Well tell them to get a life. All but everyone who uses the expression on these forums use it as an abbreviation of American. Brits, Yanks, Limeys, Merkins, who cares.

Go find plastic boxes in the woods and stop being so bloo dy sensitive.

Having been amused by the fuss this caused I was idly browsing the relevant page on dear old Wikipedia and I was "shocked" to discover what I have been eating all these years. If ever I feel like a meat/vegetable based snack in a pastry case I surely wont be able to ask for a couple of Pasties any more :D

I was thinking of something along these lines! Though the local "motley crew" of OXON cachers have suggested DigitalJim, a name I've been called by JollyJax as it's a little easier! I turned up to my first event cache to be asked who I was..

"Well... 0100101001010010!!"

Or even "010011010110010101110010011010110110100101101110" although I wouldn't want to sign a nano with that! :D;)

It's bad enough trying to sign 0100101001010010 in a micro! Let alone THAT in a nano!
