codybear71
I'm still new to the game and having alot of fun with my Garmin Venture HC. I thought it might be easier to have a dashboard unit to get me on the right road then use my handheld unit. What ones are geocache friendly? Thanks for any replies. codybear71 in WV Quote Link to comment
gallet
The Colorado has a very good display for a car, better than a nuvi in fact. I like the portrait format too, I'd rather see what's ahead than what is to my side, and it's obviously tailored for caching. Only drawback is that it does not speak directions. Quote Link to comment

Thanks for any replies. codybear71 in WV I use a Garmin Nüvi 205. It has the same GPS chip as the Oregon but cost a lot less. It also takes GPX files out of the box. Just save them from GSAK directly to the GPS and they'll show up as treasure chests on the map. You can even do some clever customizing of the GPX export the get really good names for the favourites. (I'm using this %ShortName=9(%Dif/%Ter/%con1) and a max length of 20 characters and it works very good for me. I get a 9 character shortname right on the map along with difficulty, terrain and container size. Taking it a bit further you can go completely paperless with the Nuvi using the GSAK macro from pilotsnipes (http://pilotsnipes.googlepages.com). I use the pilotsnipes macro to get the geocache all the cache information I need (except spoilerpics) onto my GPS but I also export the as GPX to get the treasure chest on the maps. So basicly I save the geocaches twice onto the GPS but thats just my personal preference. But sure... I wouldn't say no to an Oregon or a Colorado and I'll propably buy an Oregon some day but for the price I payed for my Nuvi 205 I am very satisfied. I like your idea of exporting a GPX with customized name, Is it possible to include only the last three digits of the lat and lon of the coordinatesd into the name (to save space)? That would make it truly paperless for me. Second, how do you trasnfer the gpx file to the nuvi so it shows on the favourites and not as poi? Quote Link to comment

The best way to go paperless on a Nuvi is with one of the GSAK macros. http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=193374 http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=195389 To use directly in Favourites, just copy the GPX file to the unit. Thanks for any replies. codybear71 in WV I use a TomTom One v3. Using GSAK and PocketQueries, I can load caches directly onto the TomTom One as a point of interest. I then GOTO the point I am interested in. The biggest probelm is that since it is a road GPS, it tries to get me close via road, but the trail head may not be at the closest point to a road. It's worked in most cases, though. Quote Link to comment

Thanks, I am aware of the macros and I've been using them. I was more interested to put the Gpx in the favourites but wanted to have more info in the name. How can I export it to GPX and the name have the cache name and the last three digits of Lat and Lon? Quote Link to comment

There is a LOT of information in there. Second, how do you trasnfer the gpx file to the nuvi so it shows on the favourites and not as poi? Just export GPX from GSAK and save in x:\garmin\gpx (where X: is the drive letter for your GPS). This expert dialog is where you can customize the name that is shown in the favourites. Use uncheck defaults and start experimenting. Use the help button and click in the "Waypoint name" field. Then click "special tags" to read more about it. There is a lot that can be done here.
