From my cache page (link in my sig line), I'm trying to come up with a 'complete' set of jargon-busting explanations for new cachers, including decoding some of the 'nyms seen in logs. Any help would be... you know. Helpful :P

 

- (Minus) used to denote something removed from a cache.

+ (Plus) used to denote an item left in a cache. More often used overseas.

35mm - A Micro Cache made from a film pot.

Ammo Can or Box - A popular Geocache container.

Bagging - Damp/spoilable cache items put in a watertight bag.

Cache - Short for Geocache.

Cache & Dash - A quick, easy-to-do geocache, ideal for caching in a hurry.

Cache Cam or Camera - A disposable camera left in a cache for finders to use.

Cache Hound - A dog along for the walk. Lots of other names on this theme.

Cache Note (or Notice) - Information left in a cache for Muggles.

Cacher - Also known as a Geocacher. One who caches!

Calling Card - A card left in a cache as proof of a visit.

CITO - Cache In Trash Out. Picking up rubbish and litter while caching.

CITO Event - A type of event with litter collection or area regeneration themes.

CNS - Short for Could Not Search, perhaps because of muggles.

Coin - See GeoCoin.

Co-ords or coords - See below.

Co-ordinates - The location of a target in Degrees and Decimal Minutes.

Datum - The 'spheroid' used (there are several, but caching uses WGS84).

DNF - Did Not Find, meaning the cacher couldn't locate this cache.

DNL - Did Not Look. Usually posted in a note, same as a CNS.

Earth Cache - A geology-based virtual cache with educational value.

Event Cache - Local cachers designate a time and place to meet/talk caching.

F-FTF - A 'rite of passage' for any cacher. Their 'First FTF'.

FTF - First To Find, meaning this cacher has defiled this virgin cache!

GC Number - See Waypoint.

Geocache - The object you're looking for. Often a small box.

GeoCoin - Like a TB, but in the form of a coin, often with its own icon.

GPS - Short for Global Positioning System. It uses satellites!

GPS handset - A device which gives your position to within a few feet.

GPSr - GPS receiver. See GPS handset.

GZ - Short for 'Ground Zero', meaning the area your GPS takes you.

Hitchhiker - A Travel Bug, GeoCoin or similar Trackable Item.

ICT - Short for Ivy Covered Tree, a popular cache hiding spot.

In: - Item left in a cache, often as a swap. See also Out, if you need to...

INATN! - Short for It's Not About The Numbers!, a common caching phrase.

L - Short for Left. An item left in the cache.

LNTN - See TNLN. ;-)

Logbook or Logsheet - Book in the cache to log your visit in.

Lunch Box - A plastic container used as a cache container. S/o Ammo Can.

McTat - Derogatory term for low-quality/value cache contents.

Micro Cache - A tiny geocache, big enough for a logbook but very little else.

Mystery Cache - A puzzle or unusual cache which fits no other type of cache.

Muggle - A non-geocacher. Also sometimes known as a Geomuggle.

Muggled - When a cache is found and raided, damaged or removed by a Muggle.

Multi Cache - Where co-ords lead to a clue (or clues) to the actual cache location.

Nano Cache - A very small cache, typically the size of the tip of a finger; 1cc/1ml.

NEF - Short for Nice Easy Find.

Night Caching - Geocaching at night! Best done at a spooky location.

NINO - Nothing In, Nothing Out. See also TNLN.

No Trade - No swap made.

Numbers (wo)man - A cacher who likes to find lots, as quickly as possible.

Offset Cache - The most basic form of Multi Cache.

Out: - Item removed from a cache when swapping or taking a traveller. See In:

PAF - Phone A Friend, for when you can't find a cache which your friend has!

Power Trail or Ring - A series of caches intended to be done in sequence.

Puzzle Cache - See Mystery Cache.

QEF - Short for Quick Easy Find. See also NEF.

Reverse/Locationless Cache - Where you found an item <i>then</i> logged its position.

ROT13 - The usual way of encrypting cache clues: GURR = TREE (A=N, B=O, etc.)

Sandwich Box - See Lunch Box.

SBA - Should Be Archived; a log type now called Needs Archived (bad English!)

Signal - GPS relies on radio waves, and tree cover can make accuracy poor.

Signature Item - Often home-made item a cacher regularly leaves in a cache.

SL - Signed Log.

Speed Caching - A race against the clock to find the cache box.

Spoiler - A log or photo on the cache info page which gives details away.

STF - Almost a FTF, but just pipped to the post! (Second To Find)

Swap Item - Something taken or left at a cache, in exchange for another item.

T - Short for Took. An item removed from the cache.

TNLN - Took Nothing, Left Nothing; made no swap at the cache.

T4TC - Short for Thanks For This Cache.

TB - Short for Travel Bug.

Tracking Number - Unique number on a TB or GeoCoin used to identify/track it.

Traditional Cache - A cache where the co-ords on the cache page point to it.

TFTC - Short for Thanks For This Cache. See also T4TC.

Trackable Item - See Travel Bug and GeoCoin.

Trade Up (or Even) - Good practice, only swapping items of equal/higher value.

Travel Bug - An item which has its location logged from cache to cache.

Treasure - The contents of a cache (not used with the irony you might expect!)

TNLC - Took Nothing, Left Card (as in Calling Card)

TNLN - As above, but Left Nothing. Cache was logged but not raided.

TNLNSL - As above, but 'Signed Log', which sort of goes without saying...

Tupperware - The 'brand name' version of a Lunch Box, often used as a cache.

Unknown Cache - See Mystery Cache.

Virtual Cache - A sort of 'cacheless cache', where the location is the prize.

Watchlist - A saved selection of caches which mail you when they're logged.

Waypoint - The code numbers/letters given to a cache. Example: GC1E26P

Webcam Cache - Where the aim is to be photographed with your GPS.

WGS84 - The standard Datum used for caching. It's a mapping thing.

Cachers trail - path through the grass/nettles created by previous cachers.

Lock/Satellite lock - when your GPSR has locked onto the minimum number of satellite signals to calculate your position.

Grandfathered cache - one which would not be published under the current rules, but did when it was placed and is allowed to remain.

How about a slight amendment to one of yours already listed:

 

Calling Card - A pointless piece of card left in a cache as proof of a visit wich usually ends up as Geo-litter.

 

 

If caches were checked regularly by the owners they could remove these calling cards and either store them or destroy them, no need to try and stop people leaving a small card as well as signing the log.

All it takes is a quick note to the owner that the box needs clearing.

Hi, I've recently taken to putting BYOP on some of my cache pages as quite a lot of people turn up without any writing implement. The caches all start with one (usually!) but forgetful cachers manage to take them with them. The next lot then complain there isn't a pen! :rolleyes:

Surely if you can afford / remember your GPS, bringing a pen with you isn't too much to expect!! :)

Additional Waypoints-a way of posting the coordinates of extra locations in a downloadable form. Also used by Reviewers in System tools for Proximity checks

I'd toss in the following as well:

 

"Jeeps": Slang term for GPS.

UPOS: Unusual Pile Of Sticks. A common method for hiding geocaches by piling sticks and other forest debris on top of the container.

Sig Nickle: A specific type of signature item comprised of a wooden nickle decorated in some way as to identify a cacher.

Wooden nickle: A small wooden disk, typically about 1.5 inches around and 1/8 inch thick, used as a base for sig nickles. Blank wooden nickles are available in most craft stores.

Why should they have to regularly visit their caches? If the caches are well placed, hidden well and not muggled, the only reason for owners to visit would be to change the logbook when full or signs of damage/damp.

 

I know we have had this debate before but what is the point of a calling card? Caches are required to SIGN the logbook so why duplicate things and leave unnecessary things in a cache? I will even go as far to say that they are not swappable items (although I'm sure someone will disagree!).
