Whacked Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 OK, so I was searching thru craigslist looking at different GPSr units. I spotted one selling the eTrex Legend with USA Streets navigation CD (pic shows unit with a CD package labeled Garmin MetroGuide North America) for $55 The GPSr aside, what about the software? I know next to nothing about it. Isnt that pretty much included on newer units? I am just curious if its worthwhile to get for the software alone. Quote
+Zac Young Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 I use this unit myself. This software that you are looking at give you more detailed road maps. The unit comes with highways and major roads in North America. I've been using the provided software on it for a while now, and I've discovered that it does not give you the smaller roads, just major and highways. I've relying on that this software will give you access to the smaller and less major roads. Hope this helps! Quote

While you can load in maps, this unit won't auto-route. You can create canned routes on your PC, then upload them, but it won't automatically route you to a destination. Handheld units usually don't come with mapping software. Car navigation units usually do. Quote
+briansnat Posted September 26, 2008 Posted September 26, 2008 Software is good to have. The unit + the software for $55 is a pretty good price as the software alone goes for close to $100. Two caveats. The Legend doesn't have much map memory so you won't get a lot of map coverage. Perhaps a few counties worth depending on where you live. Also the Legend doesn't have greatest reception when compared to the newer units. If you cache a lot under a heavy tree canopy you will need to hold it a certain way all the time (flat face up to the sky) or your will lose reception. Quote
Whacked Posted September 27, 2008 Author Posted September 27, 2008 Ahhh OK. I was more interested in the software. I got hooked recently by taking a GPS class and geocaching was part of the practical final. The unit we used was the 76S. The 76S seemed pretty good. Some of my finds it lead me directly to it. Only real downside is that its pretty big. Kinda hard to slyly use it when muggles out and about. At work we have a older Legend (which sometimes doesnt work) but this weekend I checked out the 60Cs. Not sure I like the color screen. The shade can make it hard to read. Too bad I cant use the Trimble surveyors dont let it out of their sight Got a lot of homework and errands to do but hopefully can log some finds I'll send the seller a email. might be able to talk him down. +anakerose Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 We won't go on a longer caching day anymore without the laptop with streets & trips and the GSAK progam. Quote
