Puzzle Masters Challenge

The two brothers looked at each other in fear. He was

coming closer. They had their treasure, they fought valiantly to

save it. They thought they were free and clear, but

somehow.....

Two years ago they found it. It was small, but powerful.

Somehow they knew that what they had found would change their

world. The year was 1706 and the world was plugging along as usual

when the brothers made their discovery. They stumbled upon it by

accident and at first didn't give it a second glance. After they

looked at it more closely they realized what they had. It was

amazing, the last of its kind. People had searched for a long time

for this. Debates have been had over its mere existence. Wars had

been fought to obtain it. Yet there it was, in their hands. They

decided to keep quiet about it. They would wait until the talk died

down; until people lost interest. They knew that if they waited

long enough, it would be safe.

A few months later, talk started up again. People began

to search for their treasure with zeal. Numerous times, they were

almost discovered as its keepers and they fought with all of their

being to protect it. Now, HE was here. And he wanted it. What could

they do?

The brothers came up with a plan. They would hide their

treasure somewhere that no one would ever accidentally stumble

across it as they had. Not knowing if it would ever be safe to

retrieve it in their lifetime, they created a puzzle that, when

solved, would reveal a code that would ultimately lead to its final

hiding place. Still, they were not sure that this would be enough.

So, to further complicate things, they divided their puzzle into 16

separate pieces and distributed them to their closest friends on

the East Coast with this simple letter of instruction.

"Dearest friends,

Knowest well that we are in danger. We have found a

secret, a secret so divine that folks will do anything to

obtain it. Fie on them, for we have hidden our secret and

hidden it well. Herein, we need thine assistance. Prithee,

hide

ye well a treasure and in such treasure a code. Protect thee

thine treasure with a puzzle of much difficulty to give woe

to

all who try to solve it. There shall be 16 of you and each

shall have a code delivered by messenger in the morrow. In

faith, one canst only hope that only the faire of heart

shall

findest our secret. Perchance one of our descendants.

Mayhap, one of thee. Grammercy and fare thee

well."

Of course, all being good friends they blindly complied

with the request and hid well a puzzle...

Fast forward to 2008. Centuries later, the treasures are still

out there. The puzzles have not been solved, the codes have not

been pieced together. The mystery of what the brothers found has

not been revealed in all this time. Can you be the one to solve

this mystery?

As the years have gone by, each friends' treasure has remained

protected by their descendants. The hides have been changed, the

puzzles re-done. But one fact remains the same. Each treasure chest

contains a piece to the final puzzle. And that final puzzle will

lead you to a secret. A secret which has been held onto for years.

Will you be the one to discover it? Will you take the

challenge?

Alas. I shall not be able to participate, since at least one is a cemetery cache. I do not do cemetery caches. Oh, well.

Harry,

Read the listing again. It references a cemetery as a part of the story and the puzzle is solvable at home. So there is no need to go to a cemetery. Hopefully that will work for you.

The PMC series is a quite diverse selection of puzzles and cache styles. Well worth the look.

The ones I have issues with involve canoes and climbing - but then that's what teaming up against the CO was meant for!

Well here it is!!!! What we have all (well maybe not all) have been waiting for...

At the moment it is visible by only premium members. Any chance this could be opened up to enable basic users to access it?? :D

:D:D:huh:

I will be keeping it like this until the first finders go out and log the cache. There have been a lot of people working on this for a long time. Plus it is interesting to see who has been looking at the cache. Bookmark it if you can and keep your eye out for when it is found and not members only any more...

January 24 by Muddy and Amused (514 found)

(#514) FTF #69. Whew! What an awesome end to a wonderful journey. It all started back in September of '08 with “Quick Brown Fox +- 25” in Wharton Forest and then, in a round-about way (throughout 5 states), ended up here once again in Wharton Forest. As we collected the puzzle pieces I started noticing patterns pretty early on. It didn't take long to figure out how to solve the Finals puzzle pieces, but retrieving all of the pieces was a different matter. In mid-December with only two puzzle pieces left to collect I was successful in solving the finals coordinates, but we still had two more PMC 'feeder' caches to find first. Earlier this month we were finally able to finish up the 2 PMC subsets we still needed and go after the final. The first two available weekends we had after that we got snowed in. Today, finally a nice winter day with no snow (on my end, not in Wharton) we were finally able to finish up this fantastic series. We really didn't know what to expect with this final other than multiple stages. We showed up early this AM well packed for almost whatever came our way. After a long drive back to Wharton, our team, Muddy and Amused (and Muddy JR) were certainly Happy and Enthused cruising right through the first several stages of this final. Eventually we did hit that proverbial speed bump. This one stage had us really Sweaty and Confused! Took an hour and 40 minutes to get past that one stage. After that we regained our momentum back and were able to get the last couple stages fairly quickly. What an amazing adventure this series was. Turned out to be our only cache find for today. (Take note, when you plan to go for this one, plan to make a full day of it). Muddy JR traded a toy dinosaur for a toy firetruck. We left a couple of coins and took a few coins to get them moving. We also enjoyed using the FTF gift cert for Pic-a-Lillie. This made for a nice rest stop (our only one of the day) and delicious dinner before our long drive back home. TFTC and a very enjoyable series. We hope there isn't a sequel. SL.

Incidentally, we have been keeping a log of mileage and time spent on this series to track where all of our caching time and gas money has gone to. If you are interested here is some of our recorded stats...

Total driving mileage: 3228.12 Miles (it adds up quick!).

Total drive time: 67 Hours, 29 Minutes.

Total mileage in boat: 5.66 Miles (Thanks again CJ!!!).

Total hiked miles: 14.83

First PMC found: 09/08/2008

Final PMC found: 01/24/2009

Total days from start to finish: 138

Most PMCs found in one day: 3 (tied: 10-19-08 & 11-23-08).

PMC FTF's: 4

PMC STF's: 5

PMC DNFs: 1 (PMC - The Order -- do this one in a group if you can).

Favorite Puzzle: PMC - Quick Brown Fox +- 25

Hardest Terrain: PMC - The Song of the Master Sun.

Easiest Terrain: PMC - Clueless Again.

Congrats to Muddy and Amused for conquering the Challenge. It was great fun watching you and the other cachers tackle the beast.

.....We hope there isn't a sequel.

You just never know about sequels. From all the fun gipsie had organizing this series I would not bet against it. Though next time I think she should broaden her horizons beyond the Mid-Atlantic region. I wonder if we can reserve GC1ZZZZ for the next challenge?? ;)

There is now a Puzzle Masters Challenge geocoin available from Geoswag.com

It can be seen in the presales area.

This series has peaked my interest. Perhaps I will take on this challenge, though logging the finds is another story...

The coin is very cool... ;) I created it with linuxxpert's help. The puzzles are great and a lot of fun to work on.

There is a site located HERE that will have the complete lists of PMC puzzles as soon as I finish updating it. The majority of them are on there though. I hope you have fun with them!
