What kind of geocache would this be? Second Life?

Hi all,

I was wondering about a cache I was thinking of submitting? In the last month or so I have been playing around a lot in the virtual online world of Second Life. It's a lot of fun. They also have virtual geocaching there which is really awesome! But, with the caches you find there you have to log them on slgeocaching.com instead of here which I can understand because they are not "real" caches. The idea I had for a cache that could possibly be logged here would be to find a location on Second Life (like the main office for geocaching in SL) and the requirement to log the cache would be to take a picture of your personal SL avatar in front of the SL geocaching office, and make sure the name of your avatar is put into the log since it would be different than your geo name. What gave me this idea was this cache in Germany http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...2c-64c1a6e534cc where all u have to do is get a pic of an alien off the internet and post it to the web cam pic of the building that you can find online? Would this Second Life type of cache be allowed since it is real people in the virtual world and would it be considered a virtual cache? I thought I would ask before I would try to submit it?

It would be an "archived geocache," most likely. Please review the listing guidelines. Caches that require you to register for an account on another website will most likely not be listed. And, if the website is commercial that is a second strike. Finally, a cache without a container cannot be listed, unless it's an earthcache. (Are there geologists in Second Life?)

You would be wise to write to Groundspeak prior to investing time in planning this cache.

Ay caramba, there are still people on SL? Woof. I really tried to explore that community last year but almost immediately got turned off by how empty it is, unless you want to buy body mods  or explore porn shops- what a strange place! Who goes there? I did to join the Science Friday mob, but missed most of the show just tryin' to sit my butt down on the lawn and get on the same channel with Ira Flatow. Not!

There are some really creative communities there- the Flintstones island was EXTREMELY awesome (and empty) - but all in all its EXACTLY anti-geo. Caching there would be the ultimate armchair exercise (oxymoron supplied yes indeedy).

Don't forget the GPS requirement.

Why is a country as beautiful as Germany the source of so much armchair geocaching?

Many, many people go there.

Sadly, unless you just want to "hang out" or visit the porn places, getting a wonderful experience out of SL is a lot of work, and that isn't for everybody.

Myself? I raced sailboats for about a year, couldn't afford to do it in the real world once my skipper sold "our" boat. And now I'm a sculptor, making the things I see in my head that just couldn't be made for real.

So yes, there are things to do there, it just takes a lot of time and patience and if that isn't for you, that's fine also.

I don't know about the armchair caching, but (if I remember correctly) the webcam cache mentioned requires you to go to the webcam with the picture of the alien and have someone get your picture from that webcam. It used to be a lot harder, but with the easier availability of wi-fi and phones that are capable, you can do those by yourself.

I think they are kinda cool. While never doing a webcam cache, I have been to the locations and wished that I had someone to call who could capture a picture of me.

There is a cache in Times Square (NY) that has an ALR of a photo of the finder showing a "Found it" sign that is in the cache. The CO will accept a photo taken with a personal camera but recommends using one of a couple nearby webcams. It's called Crossroads of the World. I was within 300' of the cache a few weeks ago with my 5 year old son, but the he saw the nearby toystore with a ferris wheel inside and we went there instead.

A local geocacher that has since left the area was telling me about a web cam cache that was located near a small lake about 35 miles from here. He went to get FTF on it and discovered that it required a boat to get to a small island offshore where the web cam (also used as a wildlife cam) was pointing. He came back a week later, paddled out to the island, whipped out his phone to call his wife to take the photo and discovered that he didn't have cell phone service in the area. He got back to his boat, drove a few minutes to a spot where he got a few bars, then went back to the spot a half hour later to get the photo. He was the only one to log the cache before the web cam got shutdown and the cache archived.

Webcam caches are one thing. The one mentioned in the OP apparently just wants you to capture a picture from the webcam, then photoshop an alien into it. Whatever floats their boat, I just don't get it.

Did you look at some of the photos? Some of them are hilarious. I really got a chuckle out of the one with the teletubbie and the GWB inflatable head balloons.

I'm going to be moving one of my caches after work today which someone *claims* is near private property that caches have passed through. It's not posted so it would be hard to prevent a potential seeker of the cache from going through the private property so I'm going to archive the cache. The spot I'm going to move the container is a popular spot for mountain biking called "Area 51". It has all these obstacles that were created that the bikers ride up/down and over. This thread has made me consider adding a recommended ALR of posting a photo of an obstacle with an alien riding a bicycle over it. I'd still post it as a traditional and wouldn't make the ALR a actual requirement, as there are many that will categorically put any puzzle cache on their ignore list.
