TB recovery

We’ve all had TBs go AWOL and done the requisite emailing of the current holders to see what’s a happenin’. So what do you do next?

If someone doesn’t respond to your emails, it’s entirely possible that they’ve changed their email address and aren’t aware of a problem so is there any reason why you can’t post a note on one of their own caches about your missing TB? You could even drop the little blighter in it to see what happens. They might not get any emails but they'd notice the cache eventually.

Any opinions?

What a stupid question. Of course on this forum there’ll be opinions. Go…

Unless it was attached to my firstborn - No.

The TB is a piece of metal, scrap value about 2p, I'm not going to lose sleep over 2p.

TBs, as you well know, cost more than 2 pence. You would object if your ring was given only its scrap value. The point is that the person who can't be bothered to reply to emails is spoiling this ruleless game that we purport to enjoy. Insomnia doesn't enter into it but if you've had a bad week, relax, it's Friday.

Looking at this account you have, I don't think enough time has passed to assume that your bug has been forgotten. The oldest log of the lot was in July. Which bug is it?

Concerning the one that was marked as missing when the cache was archived, that one I would be asking the cache owner about.

Edit: past/passed

None of the ones on my page. I moved it to another account in case I wanted to abuse the person who had taken it . We're talking months here, though.

KILL THEM!! Oops!, What I meant to say was apart from polite emails there's not much you can do. In my experience, nagging or escalating things can have detrimental effects rather than expedite your TB's release. Don't put anything on a TB tag you are not prepared to lose.

My very first TB was kindly taken to New Zealand for me by a good friend. It lasted there for a little while, then some idiot decided it would make a nice present for his new cacher friend. Needless to say, it's not been heard of since despite several emails to the two guys concerned. The new cacher still hasn't logged any caches after six months.

I'm not too bothered about TB's now, but I do get very peeved when my geocoins go missing as they cost £5-7.

EXACTLY!! And don't whinge about it when it does go missing.

You're putting something out there and publishing it's position, on freely accessible land, on the WORLD WIDE web for all to see.

Get realistic!

Totally agree. Its a shame but move on. Your fluffy lion travel bug will probably sit on some 5 year old girls bedside table for a few years until it gets thrown out .

Make your travel bugs unattractive pieces of junk. Less attractive to keep. Less to loose:) Less to get upset about.

What does baffle me is coins with nothing at all on them. Even the Garmin coin we picked up had nothing to say it was traceable even though it had a nice pouch to put a note in to say what to do. I added a note to all the coins I picked up and placed to the effect that they were a special item and were to to be moved from cache to cache and not a swap item. One coin I had to use a magnifying glass to find the tracking number. how it had lasted so long in the field I will never know but it did so these strange things do happen, but I can see how a new person could just think NICE ITEM swap for McToy Thanks and never do a cache again.

Give your Bugs and Coins a chance. Make it clear that they are to be moved on. Give clear instructions.

Not everyone has done hundreds or thousands of caches and believe it or not some people do not get addicted to the hobby. They may find your Bug or Coin.

where was the whinging? ;) i thought the OP was simply asking opinions as to whether there are any other options to take, aprt from the usual polite e-mails...

Oh, and in answer to that, I think the e-mail address that they will receive log notifications on their own caches is the same as the one used when you 'send message' so putting a note on one of theirs may not help much. might be worth a try though.
