+Rockin Roddy
Bicycle riders in Denver have just been made a bit safer due to a law requiring all drivers to leave a 3' space between their vhicle and the rider. Sad we need a law to tell people what common sense should, but I applaud the lawmakers for recognizing the need!! 3' isn't much, but it's the LAW!! Quote Link to comment

+Ashallond
We just had a bicycle awareness ride here in Fort Smith, AR after a few local people were killed in Tulsa when a car turned into a group ride. (Brilliant!) The awareness ride made two TV stations and at least 3 radio stations. Wach the road at all times. Quote Link to comment

He was on his motorbike (the one that you had to use the pedals like a bicycle to start the engine....)! My father knew that man! He was exiting Hospital where he probably went to see someone! He stoped befoere he enters the main road, to check but.... A garbadge truck was coming behind him! The truck hit the old man and his bike and he was killed! They do not know for sure what happent and police investigates the whole thing, but I believe that the driver was not paying atention, he didn't see that the old man stopped... Ido not know.... The driver was arrested but... a biker died!!!! Poor old man!!! Pay attention!!!!! Quote Link to comment

The driver was arrested but... a biker died!!!! Poor old man!!! Pay attention!!!!! It's really sad to hear Nikos, sorry for the loss of a friend! It's really bad too, when you have to worry if the person behind you will be paying attention enough to see you stopped, doing what you must to keep yourself safe isn't enough if others can't do the same. I was coming home last week when a lady pulled out in front of me. She had plenty of room, but did make me slow down and follow her. When a car in front of her slowed to turn, she slowed and never did speed back up, so I passed her...which apparently irked her because the next thing I know, she's right up my tailpipe and then passed ME on a double yellow...you can bet I was going the speed limit too. But, that's not all, she then started driving irratic and, on a curve (after slowing back down below the speed limit and making me slow again) she STOPPED unexpectedly right in front of me. Now, I had plenty of room to avoid her since I was already watching her closely and wasn't too close to her, but I did give her a nice single finger salute. As I went past her, she suddenly GUNNED the motor causing the wheels to squeal, she was now right up my arse again?? I stopped right there in the road. She and her passenger were both shouting expletives and making gestures which were unbecoming a lady, this REALLY got my blood boiling (more than her asinine attempt to sideswipe me even) and I came unglued right then and there. Took her plate down while I was cussing her out and asked a bystander to call the police. Her reasoning?? I couldn't quite grasp it all, but she was mad because I passed her was the jist of it, I think she was mad I was behind her too?? I don't know, are we now not allowed to go around someone impeding our progress? I mean, I passed her all nice and legally, didn't even give her a reason to get mad...but that must not have been enough! Not sure what happened, the lady threw her car into reverse almost hitting the bystander's vehicle and sped off in the same direction she had just come from. I never heard from the LEO, but I think a ticket or two was in order and likely given since I had witnesses who could back my account of the incident! You just never know who will be the dumb arse who tries to kill you... Moral to this tale?? PAY ATTENTION, some people don't have the brains to drive safely and we have to protect ourselves! +Sivota
O, I am sorry to hear that GATOULIS. What a sad news and what a stuppid way to end one's life. Just because some one didn't pay attention. I really feel sorry for that man. And Roddy, yelling women because of nothing??? All the more reasons to get the message out. I found a great cache to start one of the Bike Awareness coins today. Check out this "cache". Also two of my coins will be going to South Africa soon. I asked a geocacher who has been in the Netherlands for a year to take them with him. I went to bring them to an International TB Hotel today and left them for him to pick up. Quote Link to comment

It seems that when they get their licence to drive, they are forgeting everything from the exams, what they have to do..... they do not respect anything... That's a huge problem!!! Some guys seems that they were born in a car and they never were on foot!!! No respect to pedestrians, or even to bikers!!! I have stories too, that.... Robert! I do not think there is any cointest now! So... feel free! Quote Link to comment

People seem to miss that word only, and pull out into the oncoming lane to pass a bicycle--EVEN if there are vehicles traveling in the opposite direction. I can't tell you the number of times I get pushed off into the shoulder because someone can't wait until it is safe to pass the bicycle. What is so difficult about slowing down and traveling behind the bicycle until it is safe to pass? Quote Link to comment

What is so difficult about slowing down and traveling behind the bicycle until it is safe to pass? People are in to much of a hurry. They have added bike routes to some of our highways. Motorist don't give them the at least 3 feet. The law isn't enforced, unless someone gets hit then they can use it for a charge. Back when I rode bikes there was sidewalks and that is where bikes belonged. I had to search for the laws so I knew what they were. Both as a motorist and a bicyclist. I started riding my bike again a few years ago. It seems motorist don't want to share the road with bicycles. Think they are to slow and are just in the way. When I ride my bicycle I wonder why bicycles aren't on the left like walkers. To me I would prefer to see the cars coming at me. When they are behind you or passing you can't see what they are going to do. Oh and my favorite. Come up close behind you and blast the horn. Like get out of their way. Don't be distracted on our highways. It causes accidents. Quote Link to comment
+Sivota
What is so difficult about slowing down and traveling behind the bicycle until it is safe to pass? Absolutly nothing is difficult about that. I think one of the problems is that a car seems to be a "good" place for people to let go of all kinds of frustrations and a "save" place to misbehave. I saw some television broadcasts about that. People were recorded yelling, frustrated and being impatient and agressive. In short, behaving like "idiots" and (when they saw themselves back on film) admitting that they only acted this way when driving. It seems a lot of people do this, although I don't know why. Maybe it is because we think we are anonimous in our cars and we don't have to be civil to drivers or riders we don't know. On the other hand we feel personaly attacted when someone is in our way. In the Netherlands we have a lot of these problems. The country is to small, trafic jams everywhere and we tend to be to late al the time, so we are always in a hurry. Leave in time, so you don't have to hurry!!!. Quote Link to comment

Don't be distracted on our highways. It causes accidents. One of the reasons is because motorists can better judge the speed and distance away a bicyclist is when going with traffic. It also is less of an obstacle for drivers which, I would guess, means traffic moves along quicker when bicycles travel with traffic. Remember, some bicyclists travel at speeds upwards of 25-30mph at times...or more (I think my fastest speed was 55mph on a long straight downhill section). I rode bicycle for a long time until just recently, a lot of experience. I felt riding with traffic was safer, having a mirror mounted on your helmet or handlebars makes it even safer. Wearing bright clothes and maybe even having an orange flag really help motorists to see you! Quote Link to comment

I had one when it first started that a cacher picked it up and it was look left, look right, look left and as you pull out look right again. He always looked both way but after picking up the coin he looked left again and there was a bike there that he would of hit. Now that did its job. 4. What time on Tuesday do they expect me back at work? 7 A.M. Quote Link to comment
+WRITE SHOP ROBERT
Advice: When turning left, do so from the proper lane... or the center of the road. It's appropriate to "take the lane" when approaching the left turn, so vehicles can't cut you off when turning. #2: $3.55 No prohibition against multiple entries? Nope, you can answer as many questions as you like, just not the same one in two consecutive posts. You may also win multiple spots in the drawing. Quote Link to comment

PastorJon
Safety: Pulling out of a grocery store the other day, I almost pulled into the path of a bicycle coming at me from the right (riding against traffic). Cyclists should travel with traffic... and drivers should look out for cyclists who might be in the wrong place. Fortunately, I knew the cyclist, and was able to speak with her later about the near miss... she's just started riding again-first time in over 20 years! 5: Room 305 Quote Link to comment
Maine Family
Because I want to know the rest of the story, Todie's Wild Ride...What Is It?? I have been checking and the answer hasn't been put on the five coins yet. When are you going to tell the answer. Now I will have to guess then I am done. 8. How many pieces of furniture did I have to unload from the Truck on Friday? 35 I will tell you a story that happened here. There was a motorcycle and his passenger riding down the road. The passenger happened to glance side ways and saw a horse coming right at them. She told her husband and the horse hit them but he kept control of the motorcycle. He had a few bruises and his wife wasn't hurt. The horse had to have surgery but is fine. The horse had run away from home. These are the people we want on the highway. Alert and in control. +Rockin Roddy
5: Room 305 The fact they changed the law a few times (with, against and back to with again), some cyclists don't realize they're even in the wrong. Off to bed...was up at 4am this morning and will be up at 4am tomorrow as well...OUCH! Business is pretty bad, but you could really tell how badly the economy is for our area today. The Firefighters outing which usually has at least 120 players had only 40 players, the shotgun start which is usually started with a flyover by Lifeflight was started with the siren of the one and only truck they brought out (they usually line the whole drive). But, they say it's getting better... Quote Link to comment

+seekerfamily
Well, let's have a game then. I'd like to see this thread back at the top for a while... I've received some Coins from Dr.Neal to use as prizes in the Cointests!! Thank you for the kind donation!! We're going to go with the Drawing Folder again. I'll post some questions, and a correct answer will get you a spot in the drawing! Once there are 20 enrties in the drawing, I'll award one of the prizes. Here's how to play... Begin your post with your Bike Safety advice, or story. Answer only one question in each post. Do not answer the same question in two consecutive posts. Do not edit your post(just post it again if you have a correction, without changing the answer). Be sure to note in your post which question you're answering. Did I forget anything? If i did, they I'll add it when I remember. Here are some questions... 1. How many items were in the envelope that Dr. Neal sent me? 2. What was the amount of postage on the Envelope? 3. What date was the Envelpoe mailed to me? 4. What time on Tuesday do they expect me back at work? 5. What room do I have at the Motel? 6. What was I watching on TV when I wrote these questions? 7. How many Geocoins came in my mail on Friday? 8. How many pieces of furniture did I have to unload from the Truck on Friday? OK, Let's go!! Bringing over to new page.
