COINTEST: Todies Wild Ride!

Pay attention please, the constant posting of "pay attention, save a life", while is is an important message, is considered spam in these forums. Is there a purpose to this constant posting, and having hundreds of posts saying nothing else? When did this thread become nothing but spam? It started out so nice, and for such a good cause, but this constant posting, and reposting, of the same phrase is going nowhere. I would hate to close a good thread because it became pointless. Can we please bring this back to being a real cointest, and have it serve a real purpose? Is the person responsible for this part of the cointest missing in action? If so, please refrain from spamming this forum over and over, and wait for their return.

I've sent a message to Rockin Roddy as well, asking him to get this back on the topic of Bike Safety, the trackables involved and an actual cointest, if a cointest is even still being held here, it's hard to tell without wading through 45 pages of spam. I think you are going to lose your original message if this were kept up. The real messages and the real information is being lost here.

First, my apologies, I was called away rather suddenly to address some heath issues. Didn't mean to abandon the thrtead and THANKS for everyone keeping things going.

As for the message Eartha has left, I received a very similar email asking us to stop this or we'll be shut down. I have sent you a reply Eartha, explaining the reason for the catch-phrase cointests, and will understand if you don't allow us any more of those types of cointests. If you'll notice though, many of the posts do not only contain the catch-phrase, we are keeping track and communicating about the cointest too!!

For those who might be lurking, the reasons for the catch-phrase cointests is to get those posting to think about what they are typing...whether it be Pay Attention or Watch For Bikes etc, every time someone posts that, every time someone reads it, I'm hoping you all come away thinking and remembering! I know I have and do! The rules are simple, have fun and make sure to include that catch phrase in the post! Some people are pretty creative with their posts, this makes it even more fun (IMHO).

Another reason for the cointests is to give away coins, to get more people involved and to spread bike awareness, the catch-phrases, while maybe appearing to be nothing more than spam, actually has a meaning and is going hand-in-hand with all that Todie's Wild Ride is about! Now, not all of our mini-cointests are catch-phrase, but they are a good way to keep the thread hopping while acheiving our goals. Seriously, I'd not host so many cointests, but I'm afraid the postings of just watching the coins and such wouldn't be supportive of having the thread kept alive (giving coins away gives reason to the thread)...and I have fun spreading the coins around!!

Anyways, I am back, the cointest is now over and I will soon post the winners!! How many posts were there in all this anyways?? :unsure: We'll start up another cointest soon, I have heard from a couple wanting to start some Q/A cointests...THANKS!! You guys make this all worth while!

Let me read through some of the posts I've missed out on over the last day plus and read some of the well over 300 emails I've been sifting through...WOW!!

Yes there is a purpose for the saying being posted. To promote bike awareness, and to win some coins this is the saying that will stick in peoples mind. It is an actual contest and Rockin Roddy and Kaboom will pick the winners. Thought it would be yesterday but Kaboom had the flu and it looks like Rockin Roddy now has it since he hasn't been on here. I am not sure why the saying would be considered spamming this forum because as some of the posters has said because of the saying it prevented an accident. The winners will win coins to send out into the wild to promote Todie's Wild Ride. I don't think he is going to lose his original message because the sayings that has been posted to win coins, aren't forgotten and promotes bike safety, and highway safety. The sayings is just as important as the original message because it is what reinforces the important aspects of bike safety. I don't think it is spam I think it is saving a life. But we don't want this thread to be closed so until Rockin Roddy or you come on to say it is ok we will refrain from saying the saying. Hope you get better Rockin Roddy. Todie's Wild Ride will go on.

Pay Attention, Save A Life!!!

Wow, I am so happy that I am participating in this current thread. We were out this afternoon doing a little caching and coin dropping and got to witness an accident RIGHT in front of us! We were approaching a pretty busy intersection and the light changed to yellow. I used to think that a yellow light meant to speed up and try to make the intersection, but with all these catch phrases floating around in my head while driving I actually hit the brakes and stopped as it turned to red.

There was a car in the left hand turn lane facing us that had been waiting for a break in traffic to make their left turn and when they saw the light change to yellow and saw that I was stopping they started their left turn. Unknown to them, there was a car in the left lane next to me in the right lane that was approaching the intersection a little bit behind me.

The car in the left lane behind me was either not paying attention, or they were trying to beat the yellow light and kept on going towards the intersection while the car in the left turn lane (approaching) was beginning their turn. The signal light changed to red before the car approaching from behind in the left lane even made it to the intersection. You can guess the outcome - an accident, right there in front of us!

Nobody in either car was hurt and both cars suffered some front end damage. We pulled over near where the two involved in the accident pulled over and then I looked over into a strip mall right next to the intersection and saw two police cruisers parked there less than 100 yards away. By the time we got out of the car, the police were already on scene (hows that for fast response!). We told the police what we saw, that the car approaching from behind in the left lane tried to beat the light and ran the red. The people in the car that were making the left turn were very grateul that we stopped and confirmed their story, and that it wasn't their fault.

This just goes to show you that you should always Pay Attention and NEVER try to beat a signal light. Your life and the lives of others are not worth the risk!

THANKS!! Much appreciated, my friend. That goes to all of you who've taken a minute to email me or post of your concerns in here, you guys all mean a lot to me!

I won't kid you, things were scary for a bit there, but all has worked out OK and Dad is getting better and better. I do need a bit of sleep though, and a chance to catch up on everything (and get this "clean" smell off me, I hate this smell and hope not to have to deal with it too much, if you know what I mean).

Today I was doing some searching on the internet and came across something very touching and special.

I have often said that Tod must have been very special to Roddy for him to put so much time and efffort into keeping Tods memory alive and doing everything he can do prevent this from happening to someone else. Well what I found explains that in Roddys own words. Please take some time to read what he wrote from his heart and while you do, know that Tod is looking down just as Rod is looking up at him. All of this shows you what type of person Roddy is and Tod is as well, Just in a better place. We together WILL help keep Tod's memory alive! We will also do our best to spread motorcycle safety! Thats what this thread is all about!

As most of you already know, Tod Phillips of Team Rod & Tod w/KAboom, was taken from us in a motorcycle accident on Aug 12th 2008, just 2 days after the Geobash. Tod was a great friend, he was like a brother to me, a father figure to Kaleb and Kaleb's older brother whom I raised as well. We dearly miss Tod! I have many pictures of Tod on my desk and walls, some from our mountain climbing adventures, some from LHD etc...but the one thing I really wish I had was his laugh recorded somewhere...it was infectious!! Tod had a wonderful time at the BASH, we all had great fun! A few caches have or will be placed in his honor! If ever in the area, give me a yell and I'd be happy to escort anyone to his caches if I have the free time!

In an effort to raise awareness for bikes on the roads, I have initiated a coin release/race cointest on the Geocaching.com coin forums...called Todie's Wild Ride! Todie's Wild Ride stands for the wild rides these coins will have while honoring Tod and raising awareness for us bikers on the roads! My goal is to get as many coins released into the wild with the name "Todie's Wild Ride: (and anything extra you'd like here)" and the mission of spreading bike (motorized or non) awareness! Anyone wishing to release a coin or 20 for this release/race cointest should email me or read the Todie's Wild Ride thread in the gc coin forums!! First prize is my 2007 LACKEY coin!!! I would very much appreciate anyone and everyone who would like to help with this cause!!

Tod was killed when a truck pulled into his lane, the truck aparently didn't see Tod even though Tod's headlight was illuminated (auto illuminating headlight, you don't need to manually turn these on)...how is it the driver missed seeing Tod? The road was fairly flat, no obstructions to hide Tod from oncoming's view...what happened??

Well, since this has happened to me far too many times (being pulled in front of), I might be able to shed a bit of light...

Drivers often get distracted by kids in the car, the radio, cell phones, a good looking opposite sex walking etc...it happens! Please don't let yourself get distracted!! Stop to make or receive a phone call (even the hands-free calls as you could still be distracted with the conversation going on). NEVER apply make-up or "fix" your hair or anything of this nature, DANGEROUS to yourself and to others! Guys, you can read the paper at home or work...and the map should be viewed when stopped (preferably in a parking lot???)! If the youngsters get too out of hand, pull over and take care of the problem...maybe the kids are tired of being in the car and need a break anyways! Oh...and let's not let ourselves get too involved in the GPS unit...PLEASE, pay attention when driving!

Drivers often do "rolling stops" which GREATLY up the risk to others on the roads or even pedestrians! A driver hurriedly pulls up to the stop sign/light, glances quickly and keeps on going with barely a slow...easy to miss a car coming let alone a child on a bicycle or a motorcycle coming at you at the speed limit! Pull to a complete (and legal) stop (the 3 second rule comes to mind here...stop for a full 3 seconds before proceeding...it's the law)! ALWAYS look closely for kids, motorcycles, animals etc...our safety depends on you! Our younger male drivers make up a major portion of the ones doing this, but we're all guilty of the occasional rolling stop, I know I'm no saint! This goes for bikers as well, we need to make a full stop (this doesn't mean we "have" to put a foot down, I can easily sit still for a good 3 count and more most of the time)!

Drivers OFTEN get too close to a motorcycle's rear!! PLEASE, stay a safe distance behind a bike (AT LEAST 3 car lengths, double that and we'd all feel better), your presence behind us alone puts us on edge! The closer you get to us, the more uneasy we feel, the more attention we take from the road ahead and place on the road behind! While we riders don't tend to ride "in the mirror" (watching overly close the traffic behind us and continually slowing or speeding up according to following traffic's) as an AWEFUL lot of cars seem to do (especially the older and in my opinion the women...sorry ladies, I call it as I see it), we do pay closer attention to close cars as being run over tends to hurt!

A motorcycle handles obstructions and hazards MUCH differently than a car!! We sometimes need to manuever around objects which cars wouldn't...dead animals, a small item in the road...even paper as it could prove trouble for us! FOR THIS REASON ALONE, you should give us more room when following! An animal running out in front of a car may not even bother some motorists, it could be deadly for a biker! Having to avoid sudden emergencies only to be run over in the process...well, it's not a good thing to have to worry about!

Now, some would complain about us bikers and you'd likely have a gripe about some of our "renegade" riders! They shouldn't be riding dangerous as they sometimes do! Hey, even us considerate riders make a mistake on occasion, we're human just like motorists! When we make a mistake though, it could very well be deadly as opposed to a minor fender-bender!! Being too close could compound the minor mistake we make, could seal our fate...please give us room!!

Riders sometimes get close to the center line, causing motorists concern...why?? Why does a motorcycle near the center line worry you? A "friend" of mine once told me he likes to "crowd" bikes off the center line??? WHY?? We often ride the line merely to get oncoming (and following) traffic's attention!!! We're barely seen as it is, riding the center is the best way to assure we ARE seen! Believe me, I wont be coming into your lane purposely, and if I do by accident, you're crowding me will seal my fate!! Riding the line ALSO gives us a choice of "outs" in case of an emergency situation (say a driver comes across unexpectedly or such). Please give us due room!! Don't assume we're doing this merely to get a rise from you!

If we're out in the rain, it's likely we got there by surprise! Riding in the rain is no fun for us at all, the rain feels like marbles hitting us in the face and on exposed skin! The roads get very slick for us as we're now on a greasy, wet slippry-slide, our brakes don't work as good and our tires hydroplane easily. We have much less rubber between us and the road as a car does, it makes things tricky!! Trickier yet, our sight is GREATLY diminished as our glasses and our windshields DON'T have wipers! Making it even worse, now we're hidden from motorists MORE due to the drop in visibility! PLEASE STAY A SAFE DISTANCE AND RESPECT OUR SLOWER PACE!! We've got to get there just like everyone else, we can't just stop and wait it out in many cases!!

Oh...and for us riders....wear a DOT APPROVED HELMET....don't try to look "cool" riding without (in some states this is allowed) or even wearing a "fake" helmet. DON'T put your loved one's lives in a spin because YOU want to be cool! (yes, loved ones also pay the price...remember that when deciding on the helmet to wear...or not)

Drive responsibly, respect others on the roads and please stay safe!! I want all of us to arrive safely and happily!! Remember that we ALL have the same rights to these roads, the same rules apply to all! I know my driving has greatly changed since Tod's accident, as has my riding!

It is an awesome, knowledge base thread that creates awareness for all road situations and all people on those roads. How that could be considered spam is beyond me. I hope we all keep this going for Rod, Kaboom and all who have lost a loved one to ignorance.

As a former member of Blue Knights Motorcycle Club - oh, this mission hit home since it started!!! From friends lost in the 80's because of foolish deeds by vehilce drivers on PEI ~ to other events........no need for me to lament on the heartfelt losses ~ just to point out they are there ~ vividly etched onto my brain. Been there, done that and, yes, have the teeshirt so to speak!

My son has been fortunate too! While with his wife - his bike was totalled.........they both survived and were not seriously injured. All this within less than 800 feet of their house. The offending driver, who pulled into their lane, "didn't see them"! Whatever, they were on a very visable "street bike", not a "crot_ _ rocket" and were dressed for "street riding" - thankfully.

Being dressed "for the occasion" had a signifcant result in the outcome - as they had on boots, jackets, and helmets. With a traffic light, it was low impact...........and they made it. But by the Grace of God!

Education is a key, my son belongs to several State Groups which promote MC education. I, no longer ride. Regardless, please support more than just this thread - get motivated and join state associations and groups which promote the word. You can post your "Watch outs" and all that forever - but are you really reaching who needs the word? Spread it out my friends - spread it out.

Pots the links where your Letters To The Editor got published. Your links to letters to Sportsman Groups resulted in an article. Anything where documenting your word is spreading beyond the GC.com forums.

It is outside of this thread the impact will be made. The Letters to the Editor.........the joining of coalitions and supporting of Organizations.

Ride safe - look out - and at best Reach Out - to safety groups in your community and State.

In memory of several Geocachers who were avid bikers.............not all lost in MC accidents...........I know they would all want to be remembered as - "Blue Knights" logo says - "Ride With Pride". Let's all do it and remember Todd, Motogirl, Landrocket and all those other Geocaching lovers who were also "Bike Lovers" as well.

May their memories not be lost and our efforts reach out beyond these forums and our own small groups to educate and/or promote the wider community of education within our towns, cities, counties, and states.

Wow, what a great post! I can honestly say this thread has made me much more aware. I've always watched for motorcycles, mainly because we used to ride so I know how it feels to be crowded by a vehicle, or have one cut you off, or follow to closely. But what I'm finding now is that I am MUCH more aware of people on bicycles. I see them now in situations where I wonder if I would have even noticed them before. Now I choose to wait rather than try to get out of the parking lot before the guy on the bike blocks the driveway. I wasn't deliberately reckless or inattentive before, but now I *really* watch. I thank this thread for that.

I am certainly agreeing that the message is important and should be included in posts. I am going to work with Rockin Roddy on the side about how we can make this work, however, I am caching this weekend, and would like to do this next week. Keep on playing, and we'll work on ideas. I couldn't for the life of me even find the post that first brought up this particular mini-cointest, for all the repetitive posts. I couldn't see the forset for the trees. I have some ideas I'll run by you Rod, and we'll work together, but I would like a weekend away from being inside. My GPS is getting lonely and I want to go see the forest and the trees. :antenna:

Please don't offer your coin up for a discovery that is not face to face, especially a coin as important to you as this one is. I am certainly agreeing that the message is important and should be included in posts. I am going to work with Rockin Roddy on the side about how we can make this work, however, I am caching this weekend, and would like to do this next week. Keep on playing, and we'll work on ideas. I couldn't for the life of me even find the post that first brought up this particular mini-cointest, for all the repetitive posts. I couldn't see the forset for the trees. I have some ideas I'll run by you Rod, and we'll work together, but I would like a weekend away from being inside. My GPS is getting lonely and I want to go see the forest and the trees.

Wish I could join you, too cold for caching here (and the darned snow...OUCH)!! Maybe I'll check on a few of our caches including the night cache, not a soul has found since November or so, I hope it's in good shape! Have fun, my friend! And much appreciated, you're willingness to work with us on this!

I am still searching for my list of coins, so I will be a bit slow in handing out winners, bear with me a bit here. Also, I need to get my taxes done today so I can get my check and get back on my feet a bit!!

I think Team CeDo has a great little cointest lined up for us all, maybe we'll get that up and running in a bit? I'll email you Rob!
